Lewis Hamilton named most influential black person in UK

The list honours the most powerful people of African, African Caribbean and African American heritage in the UK.

This year, there's been a special focus on two of the biggest themes of 2020 - coronavirus and racial injustice.

The independent judging panel looked at people who have the "ability to change lives and alter events, as demonstrated over a protracted period of time and in a positive manner".

Interesting results. I personally thought Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford would be the winner considering his campaign for school meals, his MBE and his new campaign to get more children reading. The guy didn't even make the top ten, but did get a mention.

I won't list the others. Check out the article if you're interested, but please discuss your thoughts on the list. Agree? Disagree?

That's a sad state of affairs when someone who drives cars for a living is the most influential.

Get some better role models, black folk.

Driving cars is underselling his skills slightly, but he didn't win for being an F1 driver.

From the article

Back in June, he encouraged his fellow F1 drivers to take a knee before races - and has launched The Hamilton Commission, aiming to increase the number of black people in motor racing.

And then some drivers did and some did not.
Nobody needs more people in motor racing.

This is just reaching.

He's famous, and he spouts the prevailing, convenient ideology. This is nothing special.

Sad state of affairs to call a briton black.
He's a brit, no need to distinguish race.
Funnily enough that goes out of the window when an advert features black people on TV, just look at the response to the latest Sainsbury's adverts where one of them features a black family talking about Gravy.

He fucked off out of the UK to live in Monaco to not pay taxes.

He climbed that ladder and pulled it up after him. No commission he creates will make up for that.
Jim Clark, jenson Button, Jackie Stewart all left the UK to avoid paying taxes yet are celebrated. I don't think we shouldn't celebrate Hamilton just because he is highlighting social issues and trying to diversify f1 which is a good thing

The implication that Hamilton doesn't get the recognition he 'deserves' for being a successful F1 driver because of racism ignores that fact that he's just a monumentally boring cunt, which is why most people don't care about him.

Lewis and the panel who voted for the the most powerful people of African, African Caribbean and African American heritage in the UK would disagree.

Shouldve been Anthony Joshua

His journey and career development is much better than Hamilton

Hamilton has a very overpowered car to easily win the race for the last 6 years

Joshua doesnt have that advantage
When Lewis joined Mercedes everyone said he had made a huge mistake and critised him for it. Also he hasn't had the best car for the last six years it has been acknowledged that the ferrari was the quicker car in 2017 and 2018 also he has atleast one victory in every season he has competed something no other f1 driver has done not even Schumacher. I understand not all people like him but I think could all respect the achievements of drivers like Schumacher and Hamilton cos drivers like them don't come around often

And by influential they mean most successful? These awards are a joke. So it's a general award, but they've decided to alter the weighting for coronavirus and BLM? What about Marcus Rashford? Influenced the Prime Minister to roll back plans for school dinners and food vouchers, and got an MBE. Just because he was mouthy and paid a lot of lip service with minimal action says a lot.

Either of these were much more worthy. A lifetime of work, but let's give it to the F1 driver.

2. Professor Kevin Fenton
In the year that Covid-19 has changed our lives - Professor Kevin Fenton has been at the forefront of the fight. He is the Regional Director of Public Health England (PHE) and has been recognised for his work helping London to fight against the virus.

He also helped with the government review in to the impact of coronavirus on BAME communities. The review confirmed coronavirus kills people from ethnic minorities at disproportionately high rates.

7. Jacqueline McKenzie
The Windrush scandal saw hundreds of Caribbean immigrants wrongly threatened with deportation by the UK Home Office. It uncovered systemic racism and ignorance behind the treatment of people who had spent most of lives working in the UK.

One of the most vocal people behind the fight for justice is Jacqueline McKenzie. She's known as the 'Windrush Lawyer' and represents over 200 of the victims.

But Lewis drives a car really fast round a track.

What makes this funny is that people in the UK barely talk about F1 let alone Lewis Hamilton – yet he is somehow the most influential black person in the UK.

They want Lewis to have a roll in BLM, protests etc. Lewis is great last time we saw him was as a champion it concerns me that they want these athletes to turn corners on politics. Dudes a winner, that’s it be happy with that.

I can't believe Lewis won when you have someone like Marcus Rashford doing legit work changing the lives of thousands of kids across the UK.

Honestly, if you watch a lot of his interviews, he is a pretty genuine guy. He does do a lot of charity stuff on the side and he works with kids who are sick or goes out to inspire young kids to inspire them to follow their dreams.

He's a bit controversial because people hate his politics (BLM etc) but if you listen to what he says, he does not support BLM as a group or organisation; only as a message.

He also has the Hamilton Commission to look into diversity into F1 (not just drivers, but engineers, crews etc). His goal out of it is not for diversity quotas but to look at why there arent as many minorities in those positions and find out what opportunities they might need to become successful to get those positions; equality of opportunity, not of outcome.

Apart from being a damned fucking good driver and one of the best to have competed in F1 he is a pretty level headed guy and he does a lot of behind the scene stuff that he doesnt make a big deal out of; but he is definitely a very influential character in a lot of ways.

It's a BBC list, so...

I can see Joshua on the list, great guy, visited schools, spoke to & inspired people here (S. Arabia) when he visited for his last fight. Was a gem on the night as well.

Rashford definitely deserves a mention. Stormzy I agree with the inclusion.

Elba no, he can do everything. Not bloody fair.

The guy's an incredible talent behind the wheel, but an awful human being and a huge hipocrite in real life.

Going a little offtopic, I have to say I find it entertaining how the leftists in UK are pushing for him to be knighted while no one really cares about that stuff anymore.
