I just got back from Ottawa, wow such a good weekend!

So much free/cheap beer, it was insane!

I talked to a drunken cabinet minister haha!

And I got pics with several ministers including Ken Dryden :D

My friend told me they outlined a bill to propose the legalization of marijuana. Is that true?

I heard through the papers it was more about gay marriage than legalization of marijuana.
With the recent killing of the 4 Mounties, it would be a touchy subject.

Ken got out of the NHL and into politics at exactly the right time!

It was a resolution to urge the party to urge the government to legalize weed, yes

Doesn't mean it will become law though

And anyways, I got my pic taken with...

Defense Minister Graham
Justice Minister Kottler
Public Health Minister Bennet
International Affairs Minister Pettigrew
Social Development Minister Dryden
Deputy Prime Minister McLellan
Minister Volpe (I forget what he's in charge of)
Health Minister Dasanj
The former Minister of Immigration Caplan
and

PRIME MINISTER MARTIN!!!

I was on stage during his speech Friday night and he shook my hand and it was on TV even :D

On a somewhat related topic (related to Liberals, the recent deaths of our Mounties, and Marijuana)...some of the letters in the Calgary Herald in reaction to the tragedy were absolutlely disgusting. A couple of letters blamed the Liberals for the deaths of the Mounties...and stopped at that without any reasoning. I couldn't believe they were printed...

And this kind of reaction only bolsters my participation in the CPC, because these wackos will simply take over and the CPC will turn into the Canadian Alliance all over again.

haha

there was so much CPC bashing this weekend, it was great :)

and the former marijuana party leader is a liberal now so i saw him at a few events lol

Hey, Manning was cool.

"Let's split up the ideological right into two separate parties, basically murdering the chances of anyone but the Liberals forming the government for a seriously long time, only to have the right reform with only the slightest of shifts to the right, basically making the entire thing idiocy at its finest!"

What a cool dude.

I didn't say he was perfect, or that he didn't make some major mistakes as a leader, I said he was cool :p

Cool people don't do drugs, smoke, have pre-marital sex, or create a single-party system for over a decade. It's a rule, damnit.

Even though I'm at odds with him on a lot of issues, Stpehen Harper has done enough to earn some grudging respect from me. I was sure that back in the early days of right-wing merger talk that he was 100% pure moron.

But he isn't. I think some of the pragmatism he's shown dealing with the minority gov't. has impressed me. Each of the big party leaders has their moments, IMO...

Because the other parties know they won't be able to win the election if they cause the government to lose a vote, the time isn't right yet

The only impressive party leader I've seen since I moved to Canada is Mike Harris...every other leader has been a complete fraud or a total twit.

Of course Stronach would be the exception...

Belinda. Now I'd watch Parliament if she was PM.

Edit: And Jean was the King of political maneuvering.

Mike Harris = Provincial. Even in the godly province of Ontario (Rolleyes) provincial politics is not important enough to have impressive party leaders.

Stronach would have been a complete and total fraud of a Conservative leader because she's liberal in every sense but the economic sense, and considering Harper's basic foundational principle of the Conservative Party ("No Gay Marriage!") I doubt she would have fit right in with the party itself, and it was not ready for a change in her direction. That being said, I respect her politics greatly, but she would have been a misrepresentation of their party.

REALLY??? THANKS FOR CLARFIYING!!

I reckon being Premier of the #1 province in the country is important enough. Can't think what Chretien did in his career that was worth a shit, outside of being in office when that sponsorship scandal got going.

And Harris wasn't perfect mind you...he wasn't exactly high on sensitivity, and in some quarters in this province he's the most hated politician this side of Brian Mulroney. But more often then not Harris did what he said he'd do, which puts him way ahead of the pack. Lord knows he trumps the Norman Bates lookalike that's currently running the province.

Sure Mike Harris by and large did what he said he'd do. Then again what he said he'd do was horrible. Plus he pulled some completely reprehensible budgets. HE SOLD THE 407 TO PAY FOR HIS TAX CUTS, and we're going to be reamed by the corp in charge for what... 95 more years? Plus at a time where schools and hospitals were closing, nurses, doctors, and teachers were going on strike, and postsecondary education fees were shooting through the roof he gave 200 bucks back to each taxpayer in an absurdly transparent election year move? Blech.

And hey let's not forget his cuts to food and water inspection that led to Walkerton. But hey, at least we got our tax cuts.

Or his viciously cynical claims that privatising Ontario Hydro would lead to cheaper electricity bills.

I hope our Mike Harris, that douchebag Gordon Campbell, is gone in about two and a half months. Hey now that I think about it thats the day E3 starts. Could be a really good day. :D

Wow, I just realized I know jack shit about Canadian politics. I can tell you about Vicente Fox and his problems with Mexico's Zapatista rebels, Tony Blair's upcoming fight to remain prime minister, the political scandals swirling around Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Abbas' balancing act with Islamic terrorist groups and Palestinian moderates, but Canada, I got nothin'. None of the names of anyone mentioned here even ring a bell. I don't even know who the Canadian Prime Minister is, unless it's still that guy with the French name who can't talk right.

That's okay, most people here don't know who the PM is either. :lol

I said he wasn't perfect!

Still, how's he any worse then Dolton McGuinty, who made more promises then a car salesman and torpeoed every one of 'em before his Premier seat was even warm? And don't get me started on that twit Bob Rae.

I always wonder if Kim Campbell could've been a good leader...alas her skids were greased like nothing I've ever seen. Poor woman had no chance thanks to ole' Super Chin.

Stephen Harper is a smart man, but I don't think he is suited for running a party. He'd be better as a party strategist or something. Someone behind the scenes.

Canadian politics has hit a bit of a dull patch - after dealing with personalities like Jean Chretien, Preston Manning and Sheila Copps, people like Paul Martin and Stephen Harper just don't have the same kind of draw. IMHO, of course.

I haven't kept track of what Ontarians are thinking but is Bob Rae still a hated figure?

Someone can not look more stereotypically English Canadian than he does. :)

Yeah it's just that those things that what you see as 'not being perfect' I see as pure motherfucking bastard territory. Especially if you throw in the whole sad Dudley George incident.

Still, how's he any worse then Dolton McGuinty, who made more promises then a car salesman and torpeoed every one of 'em before his Premier seat was even warm?
McGuinty is an odd one. He lied but he ended up doing what I wanted him to do (raise taxes to pay for services) so... yeah, I'm conficted (in case you didn't notice I'm a fully paid up member of the NDP :lol)

In any case the nice thing about Ontario politics right now is that all three of the main party leaders are pretty sensitive to urban issues unlike Harris who wedged urban vs suburban/rural to stay in power with Toronto getting the really short end of the stick.
