k. up to date
played ep 1 when it came out
then never touched the game again
played from 2 to 4 between yesterday and today
the game certainly got better, and worse, and better, altho I dont have the same outstanding LOVE for the game some seem to have
I think a lot of the dialogue is bad, I think a lot of the gameplay is a chore, and this last ep was pretty bad in terms of mechanics and game logic
regardless since this is just about the story I guess i'll stick to that and the last ep (and mention the terrible butterfly effect pointless plot rippoff in ep3 elsewhere, lol)
this last ep bothered me for a couple reasons, wondering if they're widespread as ive read nothing about the game
- Nathan shows up with gun to the dorms, Max has camera. Max doesnt take picture of Nathan with gun even tho she's there to gather evidence and bring him down
- The logic to get Chloe not to shoot Frank was super random and just weird. Plus, why the hell cant I rewind time??
and more mechanically; that padlock puzzle in the barn. it wasnt THAT terrible and I got it eventualy (even tho Chloe kept saying to "look around for stuff" which was totally not what I had to do, bad game bad)
its the fact that the game never really had any puzzle like that outside of like one ocassion and it wasnt even nearly as crucial or unclear as it was here. Feels weird for it to become this puzzly randomly 4 episodes in.
edit: sidenote, as far as puzzles go I enjoyed the game lettin me introduce the wrong pin on the celphone on purpose to intrudoce the PUK code I did have. nice touch.
anyway, besides that I liked it in the sense that it finally moved the story forward in a more satisfying way it had done thus far and the stakes are gettin a bit more real for a game that virtually had none with the rewind mechanic
also, random but: the decision to go to the cinema with Warren was kinda handled horribly. I did not know it was a date thing, I did not know it was a big deal to some other girl and that everyone would take us as a couple now or dating: I dont wanna date that butthead, and after a choice in ep2 I had no other choice to make that clear. Got me bummed when I thought / realized there was some potential romancing stuff happening with Chloe too. If that plays into it then yeah, its a pretty big decision that comes out of nowhere and looks as just a side thing with someone who's a friend
lookin forward to ep5, beyond the things im not enjoying. there's plenty to like in the game, but it also constantly feels like wasted potential and wrong turns
also I guess I want to better emphasize my dislike for the butterfly effect crap in ep3, which is probably what I liked the least about the game (yeah even more so than collecting bottles in ep2)
it not even the step by step butterfly effect plot thing (as straight forward as going back in time with a photo and suddenly your friend is crippled), but its the fact that it didnt even work for me as character flavor since its just immediatly forgotten, both that power (guess there's an episode left) and whatever happened there. Its supposed to make you feel more sympathetic towards a character I already felt like that. In the end it wasnt worth the trouble; I feel like it added nothing and the game would have done better by spending time on the actual plot, which was already pretty busy by that point, and as a consequence now seems to be unfolding way too fast pace-wise
"lets just do thi s to throw a random euthanasia decision in there even tho everyone knows it has absolutely no outcome or stakes cause dude EUTHANASIA DECISION BIGGEST PLAYER DECISION EVER"
felt super dumb, rushed, and a waste of pretty precious game time considering its episodic. I appreciate the character work and quiet moments but doing them by watching Blade Runner in a timeline that doesnt matter as opposed to further developing actual Max and Chloe was a bad decision
