Light Gun Revival On Revolution?

I've always dug light gun shooters.

Time Crisis. House of the Dead. Jurassic Park (arcade). Terminator 2 (arcade) way back in the day ... I even loved Die Hard Trilogy on the PSX, specifically the Die Hard 2 scenario which was a shooting area.

I hope with Revolution we see a revival of this genre. IMO it's one of the few genres, where you can come back from work/class, kick back on the couch, open up a beer or soda, and just play.

I'm hoping to see more FPS/light gun styled hybrids actually ... light gun styled aiming/fast paced action mixed with some FPS exploration/free roaming capability. Games like that would really kick ass.

light gun games are still kicking and alive today. you just have to go to the arcade to play them. Ghost Squad = sexxxxxx
 
The thing about light gun shooters on a home console like Rev is they can have more depth and more freedom of exploration vs. the arcade where it has to be "on-rails" to more of a degree.

All the arcades around here have old games, like the newest ones they have are lightgun shooters from 4-5 years ago (still fun to play though).

Does Sega have access to the Matrix license? Matrix lightgun/FPS hybrid shooter would be craziness.
 
The one cool thing I will say about the "expandable" controller idea is this ... these attachments will cost barely anything and can come bundled with games, since the freehand controller can be used as the main rumble motor/WiFi transmitter/gyro-motion "brain" of any of these shells.

So basically its just a matter of giving it a plastic shell which dramatically cuts the cost of an accessorie.
 
One cool thing about a light gun game on rev is that, since the game knows where you are in the room, enemies could aim precicely for you, only throw objects at that side of the screen, etc. It'd be a minor detail, having them face you, but one that could look very cool in effect.

What's more, you'd have more direct control over things like ducking and leaning. Hell, you could completely cross your living room to get out of the way of an oncoming truck or grab an extra or something.

Definitely opportunity here.

iirc virtua cop 3 had a pedal to slow down time, and you could shoot incoming bullets. i dont remember anything else about it though (other than running on chihiro i think).

i want a new battleclash. i think. i cant really remember too much about it but i thought it was awesome at the time. the super scope 6 games were pretty fun too i think. damn ir sensor sucked for big screens though, had to stack it up on styrofoam blocks so it was pretty much in the tv frame for it to work properly.

I would like to see Mazan: Flash of the Blade on revolution. I played it once a the arcade and thought it was kind of cool but, the calibration was way off or something. I think it might work better with the Revolution controller.

Yeah, I'm a lightgun fan...got quite a gun collection at home :)

But unfortunately I now play games on my projector and it won't work. Does it work well on LCD TVs and such? Doesn't it require a CRT TV to be played?

the rev controller works on all tvs. its different technology than the old light guns.

I just had an idea! :P

What if there was a game where you pressed the B button and moved the controller around to look around in first person view. Then you let go of the button and it's like a light gun game.

So it would be a near seamless mix of FPS and lightgun game! The only issue is being able to walk around, which could be done with the analog stick portion of the controller that goes in the other hand.

Consider this post the uh... copyright. Yeah.

You guys do realize that the Revolution "nunchuck" controller means that FPS and light gun games are essentially the same thing now, right? Every FPS can be decently played as a light gun game.

Yup. But it also comes down to the developer too, lightgun games tend be more action oriented and scripted, whereas FPS are more exploration driven.

So it's going to be neat to see how some devs possibly mix those two elements.
 
The Nunchuck does not allow for looking around though. It would only control player movement as in forward, back, strafe left and right. By having it setup in the manner I mentioned, it would play like any other normal console/PC FPS, but also allow you to fire at the screen as if it were a lightgun game.

How would this work if the controller's sensitivity is really high? From impressions it looks like you can move the pointer from corner to the other with just a flick. In a light gun game you'd swing the controller itself from corner to corner to target stuff. Unless you can adjust the controller's sensitivity/speed or something, which would be cool.

Isn't that the job of the developer to make the sensitivity of the controller is just right?

I don't think it's really that complicated. I mean Duck Hunt on the NES has reasonable sensitivity, lol. Just point, aim, shoot.
 
THe problem with lightguns is that they need a CRT with rasterbeam to work.

Thats why lightguns doesn work on 100Hz sets, or plasma / lcd's.

So if this really does use a "lightbeam".. then its pretty doomed.
If it uses another technology.. thats fine.

I know it's hard to go over about 40 pages of thread, but it's already been stated many times that the TV has no effect on the Rev remote. It works on ALL TV's so it's not light gun tech. So it's all good on that front.

from kobun's thread it sounds as if you're moving an onscreen cursor, so i guess it doesn't work like a lightgun after all? i <3 lightgun games, though. the lightgun is the spastic physical controller that works. ever since the dreamcast lightgun came out with that d-pad on the back, i've really wanted to see a good fps/lightgun hybrid. there have been attempts, but they've been pretty awful. maybe revolution will make good.

There does not have to be a cursor on screen if the developer doesnt want one there.
 
I remember reading long time ago that Nintendo was totally against any kind of game involving a gun...Dunno why...That's why GC never had any port of any shooter while DC, PS2 and XBOX deffinitelly had them.

...there does if the position of the cursor doesn't exactly correspond to where you're pointing the remote. it's still unclear to me whether the revolution controller works more like a mouse or a lightgun.

That doesn't make any sense considering they included light guns out of the box for NES.

I dont see how it can work like a lightgun without any video in...though it suppose it could still be as accurate as one using other methods.
 
Yeah, there is ongoing discussion in the other thread about whether the remote can function in the same precise manner as a lightgun or if you're essentially using it as a mouse to move a cursor - due to varying tv sizes, angles, pixel offsets, etc. You could still use a gun attachment, it just wouldn't be played like a gun range where you point and fire at the screen, you'd have to make sure you've moved the aiming cursor that's on the screen to the correct location. Here's hoping they work it out and make it work ok.

Video in is irrelevant with tracker technology. Actually, video detection is only going to work with raster scanning.

Remember, at E3 they showed an Xbox/PS2 tracker lightgun that works with any display type.
 
I never cared about light gun games until this controller was unveiled. Same with fishing games, and Harry Potter games, and Gumshu: Bloody Afternoon.
