Replacing the HDD does not void the warranty. The thing was built to allow that. Some of y'all will parrot anything.

Turning it on without a HDD in might void the warranty. But all SATA II is built to be hot swappable (even if the hardware doesn't support it SATA II spec requires it). So it's highly unlikely that it will do any worse damage than has already been done.

The idea behind turning it on without the HDD in is to hopefully get the PS4 to turn HDMI on and say "insert HDD," at some BIOS level.

It's a long shot.
