So HDMI problems that IGN are reporting, are they false?

Here are the facts: In the past week, my Kotaku colleagues and I have used one pre-release PS4 and three retail PS4s with no problems. I've also heard from fellow gaming reporters who've used their PS4s with no problems. But the first retail unit that Sony provided me failed to work when I plugged it into a TV in Kotaku's office. A colleague and I were able to compare it to a second PS4 that did work and we found that the issue was rather simple: the bad unit had a faulty HDMI jack that we couldn't fully plug an HDMI cable into. It couldn't make a solid connection and therefore, apparently, couldn't transmit a stable signal to our TV. We tried different cables and monitors. The issue was with the console.

Summary:

1) Dudes PS4 froze while downloading/install DCU, unplugged the system, and wouldn't turn back on correctly
2) Called Sony support. They wanted to send repair box
3) Guy took out HDD and booted with no HDD
4) Got an error
5) Put HDD back in and it worked

It was very simple. You can break it down into steps though.. lol

1. Grab a screwdriver
2. Unscrew the Hard Drive
3. Take it out
4. Boot up PS4 without Hard Drive.
5. Turn off PS4.
6. Put hard drive back in
7. Boot up hard drive
8. Automatically installs firmware

2. Tries to troubleshoot the console isnt doing the best job.
3. Act like a jackass to Sony CS and cant follow simple instructions
4. Gives his name,last name,home adress and PS4 serial number to techsupport while 6000 stream monsters watch
5. Gets trolled by the chat and his friends
6. Gets DDOSED and spammed on Skype.
7. Guy removes his hardrive and boots the system up, that finely puts console into safe mode. Turns it off and reinserts the hardrive, puts it back on and it fixes it self. (5hours later)8. Upon booting the PS4 he cannot locate the ability to stream from Twitch
9. Once located, he attempts to stream from the PS4
10. Trolls flag his Twitch stream for offensive content even though he did no such thing
11. Finally streams Knack for ~2 minutes
12. Offline

Not that I think Sony would be dicks about it, but removing the cover and then taking out the hard drive would fall under 'tampering', which will void your warranty.

The HDD is made to me swapped. It does not void warranty to swap it.

IGN need to clear the air and simply explain if your new PS4 stops working you just have to open it up, removed the hard drive, boot up, then power off and re-assemble everything. Otherwise that article comes off as FUD.

He didn't use his console properly, so why should he expect it to work properly? You can't just kill power to a modern day computing device and expect it to recover like nothing happened. Maybe it will, but probably it won't.

I guess you don't have power outages where you live either caused by nature or man? I've never had a hard drive or any other component of my pc fail when power has been killed.

Alright, here is the explanation of why this worked.

Something corrupted his system config files during a routine SYSTEM UPDATE. This bricked the config files to the point to where they would not even load into safe mode. Taking out the HDD and turning the system on caused the system BIOS to take over. Almost like a forced factory reset. When he put the HDD back in, the BIOS informed the system that it was defaulted and needed the original 1.0 / 1.5 update, thus reinstalling the entire thing. The fresh install erasing whatever corruption occured originally.

How does that sound? Sounds like that is the only thing that could of happened.

He was downloading DC Online when he unplugged, not the system update. Everything else seems right though.

No. If you're not sure about something, either don't post or research it first. The HDD Is user upgradable. Sony provides instructions. It may void whatever in store warranty you get. It will not void the Sony warranty.

Per Sony it is user replaceable. "Tampering" almost always involves breaking a warranty seal, of which changing the hard drive in a playstation has never done (all the way back to PS2).

Yeah, pretty much something like this is the only plausible scenario.

However, I think we all have a reasonable expectation that Safe Mode should be a little bit more robust than this. It's not as if he unplugged it during a system update -as I understand it he was simply downloading a game.
