Like Left 4 Dead? Co-op games? You should try Warhammer 40k: Darktide

This game had a lot of issues when it it launched, but it's really good now. The new paid DLC class that was added to the game is pretty fun as well.

I'd recommend it if you like Left 4 Dead type co-op games, action that includes a mix of melee and shooting, and games that focus on gameplay and general atmosphere over storytelling.

I tried Back 4 Blood after Left 4 Dead, but it was trash. Haven't tested anything close to it since then.

Is the gameplay loop similar to Vermintide 2?
Yes, but with more of a focus on ranged attacks. You can still build melee focused classes, but ranged weapons aren't limited to only certain classes like in Vermintide 2. In Darktide, every class can use guns.

I also thought that game was awful. Darktide is considerably better, IMO.

Terrible for new players.
How so? While I do think the game is at it's best on harder difficulties with fully unlocked skill trees, I think getting to that point is still pretty fun.

I picked the game up during the skulls event so I have been playing for 2 months at most. I'm max level now (30) and I unlocked auric difficulty. There definitely needs to be work done to help explain a lot of the nuances of this game which allow high level player, but you can easily just jump in and start smashing heretics at lower difficulty levels and "max" out your character

Yeah, this game is awesome. If you're looking for a group content game with high scalability for difficulty you aren't going to find many games better than this one.

The best part of a game like WOW and other MMO's is the high level instanced group content. Unfortunately in order to play that content you have to slog through a bunch of mind numbing easy and boring content in order to get to the "fun part."

With this game you just skip all of that and start playing the fun content right away. Darktide has a really high skill ceiling too. In order to succeed at the harder content you have to master the mechanics of this game and play as a team.

It's a high-quality game.
Best FPS gameplay I have ever experienced, especially the weighty melee combat.
Yeah, the moment to moment gameplay is top shelf. Good balance between melee and ranged combat with the melee combat in particular being second to none. Having to balance light and heavy attacks with combos, dodging, blocking, shoving. this game required a lot of skill to play the high difficulty content.

Does it have a single player mode like L4D or is it multiplayer only?
When you load into a mission and there are no players you are assigned bots. I only ever got bots during the period before the release of the arbites class when everybody playing was in the higher difficulty content. Usually the game would fill up with real players at some point during the mission though. You can't create a single player only mission though.

How difficult is it on lower difficulties? I just like to press buttons and have a good time. If the community is cool, I'd try some matches...

Pretty easy.

Fortunately the game has a new endgame mode called "Havoc" which can only be accessed by the duty finder (a sort of lobby system where people create teams manually by accepting/declining invites before going into a mission) that means all the ultra try hard sweats are in there, and you cant accidentally quick match into it.

After the recent early game overhaul... a month and a half ago? You also need to unlock the next diffculty by doing enough missions on the prior one in a row without failing. Effectively you cant queue up for a diffculty your not ready for anymore.

All of this has turned the Darktide community into a reasonably chill place, outside of Havoc.

I like the sound of all of that! I don't like ruining other players' games and wasting their time if they're good at a game, and they're trying to do high level stuff. I don't have the "I deserve to be included!" mentality when it comes to that space. I am happy to languish in rookie lobbies until such a time as I git gud or not. I just finished downloading it for PS5.

The first two difficulty levels are really easy and don't require you to engage with a lot of the mechanics or have any build/loadout synergy. Once you hit the 3rd difficulty level you will need to actually dodge which is a requirement for the harder difficulty levels.

Looks cool! Too bad I don't have anyone to play with.
