Linksys WRT54G vs. WRT54GS, thoughts?

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
I've been holding off on picking up a GS because I wanted to see what the prices were going to do... Best Buy has it for $89.99 with two $10 rebates... but then I started thinking... the benefits I'm getting from going with a GS vs. a G are simply increased memory for the 3rd firmwares that have been created and speedbooster. Well speedbooster isn't going to help me because we will continue in our home to have a mix of B and G devices, and all the G's won't be speedboosters(laptop internal cards). As for the increased memory if I choose to add a 3rd party firmware upgrade... meh I don't know that I'll even be interested.

Am I reading this correctly? I seem to think now I'd be just as happy with a WRT54G.

WRT54G sucks if you ever plan on using BitTorrent. The NAT tables get filled with IPs and your connection dies. This happens at least three times a day, there's no firmware fixes for it, and if you use DHCP, your router will disconnect you at least once a day to recheck your IP, and it will always be when you're in the middle of something. You can go ahead and Google these things, they're pretty widespread problems that everyone is having with that router.

Go with a different brand.

In my limited experience with low-end linksys stuff, they have thoroughput and stability problems.

Wow I've never heard that before in any of the reviews I've read on website... since we're replacing an old Netgear router I guess I'll just pick up a G Netgear router... I was gonna go for the Linksys because it had the separate antennas.

I've got the WRT54G and Bittorrent works perfectly for me. Also, my connection has never died since I got it about 8 months ago. Maybe i'm just lucky.

I'm plenty happy with my WRT54G. It can run the XLink Kai firmware with ease!

Happy here aswell with a Linksys WRT54G, I play alot of xbox over xlink but I dont use Bittorrent so i cant comment on that. I've never had the router drop a connection on me that i can remember.

I got a GS, works really well, haven't had the problems some have described. I have two wireless cards, soon to be three, and my PS2 and my own PC connected via cable... No problems with BT either, just port forward and go...

Thanks folks, this thread has helped me make up my mind... I'm going to go ahead and get the G... any problems... the thing goes back.

I've got the WRT54G, and I used to have the disconnect problem that was described. But after much Google searching, I found that it could be fixed by changing a setting in Windows. Connection has been rock solid ever since.

And the fix was?

I use the WRT54G and have no problem with Bittorrent. Or anything else, for that matter. I was told the speedbooster wouldn't cause much of a difference unless I share vast amounts of data from one computer to the other, via the wireless network. I was told it wouldn't cause me to surf or download any faster.

Any of you folks with the WRT54G. Have you tried playing music or a video that was stored on one machine wirelessly through another? i.e. Video store on Desktop A. You browse to it from Laptop B running a standard G card and try to play it... does it stream with no hiccups?

I've got the G version as well, and no problems here either. Works great for BitTorrent for me, no disconnect issues, and very fast and easy to configure. Works great with my PSP too. :) Gotta love wireless!!

I've never done that but there shouldn't be a problem. If you are using G you should be transfering at around 25Mbps(you never get the full transfer rate on wifi). So you can transfer 4MB per second. A mp3's bit rate is what? 128Kbps = 16 KB. You'll be left with 3.9MB throughtput unused. Shouldn't be a problem even with video.

I do this all the time and I experience no hiccups when browsing to it. I also haven't experienced the BitTorrent problems stated above. I do have problems where occasionaly the wireless card will lose the connection and won't regain the connection for a couple of hours. I just disabled that service listed above on the computer that has the wireless card installed and I will see how that works.
