LISA |OT|

On sale for $4.99 right now.

Worth it? I see this game get talked about all the time on /v/ and pretty much nowhere else.

I picked it up for 3 bucks during the summer sale. Which was the cheapest it's ever been.

It's pretty well done game. It's like a sidescrolling Earthbound that's dark as fuck and really goofy. I also think the combat is way better than Earthbound.

That ending holy shit let me lie down

It's a pretty interesting and completely FUCKED UP adventure. The talk on /v/ started off from a developer viraling, but it eventually morphed into genuine talk that wasn't just stupid buzzword crap.
okay nevermind it went from developer viraling to meta-viraling.

I started playing Lisa this morning, and am currently a bit after the first crossroads
looking for a bike.
Some questions:

Is there any benefit to not using Joy? I'm playing on Painful and I haven't used any yet. Is there an achievement or anything tied to going without?

Is it possible to get all characters during a single play? If not, anyone know the minimum amount of times it must be played to get everything? I don't have a lot of time and want to know if it's worthwhile trying to search for every secret and unlock.

Is it worth leveling up? I know you can permanently lose party members, but is it worth leveling Brad by fighting randoms in tunnels and healing up in safe areas when needed?

For the bolded, yes.

I'm after the first crosswords. Wow, the
Russian roulette
section is terrible. I admire the ambition here but I'm reloading a save for the fifth time after losing the RNG enough times that it is literally impossible for me to progress in the game. Ridiculous.
Requiring three wins and not three rounds is absurd.
I was really enjoying the game until this point. I would have liked to have played through without needing to reload any saves, but god damn.

Is there a trick to this or something I'm missing? My whole party keeps getting wiped out.

Haven't beat this yet really need to get back to it I think i'm about halfway through though. I picked it up during the steam summer sale and I was really surprised at what I got now looking forward to the sequel as well.

Really glad i played this game. Made sure to buy the deluxe edition for that sweet soundtrack. Im currently on my second playthrough where im going through pain mode. Lisa: The Joyful really needs to come out soon

the soundtrack really is incredible.

I ran through Russian roulette six times before ending with enough characters to continue the game. I think the idea of Russian roulette is great, but what a frustrating implementation...
The post-story minigame is a lot easier to swallow than an obligatory RNG gamble that can completely halt your progress through the game.

I'm currently in the
swamp
, rolling Terry, Nern, and Mad Dog. No idea who the most viable teammates are but they all seem semi-useful. Combat is great overall, with a lot of varied abilities and enough difficulty to require more than basic attacks for most fights.

LISA deserves way more attention. It's one of the best games I've played in years.

Just beat (optional boss spoiler)
Satan, using Terry, Birdie, and RT. What a joke. This guy is billed as toughest in the game, but he didn't even hit me once let alone permanently kill my dudes. Birdie with the gasoline spit, RT with the burn, Terry with hottest dance, and Brad with ol' faithful fireball 4. Satan lasted five and a half turns. Terry alone was doing 10,000+ damage with each hit. Expected way worse. This really as hard as it gets?

So what is that? An expansion pack?

Finished the game. Loved it. Missing 4 achievements. Might go back to complete them. Picked up from an old save to get Kind of Selfish, did an EWC grind for an hour and a half to get characters up to speed (just to bang out another end game), then proceeded to walk right off the damn map. Blah.

I don't know if RPGMaker games can allow NG+. That would make things more fluid. I'd like to get the remaining achievements, but after my no joy/selfless/pain mode run everything else feels like busywork. I see there are multiple endings. It sucks that I need to replay the game to access additional scenes after completing the biggest challenge it has to offer.

My counter was ~45 hours. I loved nearly every minute of it, but I don't want to invest another week playing the same content just to get to a new thirty second ending. At the same time, I enjoyed the game enough I'd like to have that achievement list filled 100%.

I can't wait to play this properly. I got it when it was for sale on Steam, I just wanted to say how awesome the artwork was for its front page sale image:

That's what sold me on the game. I was already waiting for it to go on sale because one of my friends was just nagging me about it.

So worth it. I'm really excited for The Joyful. I just hope it is more of the same.

Lisa's amazing, but I don't have the time for a PC RPG. Even one as good as this is.

The biggest detriment to RPGs is their length, yeah. Getting immersed into an RPG is great, but it's very time consuming. Regardless, if you ever find the time, I'd give LISA a try. Or at least the sequel, provided it's not an RPG.

Very glad this got bumped. I just finished a new playthrough and was going to write a big LTTPesque post to convince people to buy it. Might do it here or a new thread because this game man. This game. It is 10 dollars and a better experience than almost every game in the year it came out.

LTTPs encouraged honestly, with the new game coming up and all. Small OTs don't generally get a lot of attention post-release so your LTTP post would probably go unread.

I'd do the LTTP in a new thread. The game deserves more love and with the upcoming The Joyful there is no better opportunity to get people to experience LISA.

A bit OT but I can't resist hocking it, anyone who likes this would probably also dig Off by Mortis Ghost, much more horror, much less humor, but I think people who like LISA and Earthbound would life OFF (it's free and doesn't have the technical issues of LISA's current release)

Funny, a friend recommended me this game and I immediately thought of off and recommended it back to her. :)

The creepy/disgusting aspect of this game is kinda putting me off from grabbing it. I love some good horror but this is a bit gross. Gonna wait for a sale, not in any hurry to get it.

Started a new game on normal mode. Guess I'll do a
selfish, joyless run, then revert to a save and finish up kind of selfish and joyful.

I have a bunch of games I want to get through. Xeodrifter, A Story About My Uncle, Papa Y Yo, Castle in the Darkness, among many others... No lie, I installed each one today and even tried playing a couple. But within seconds I'd turned them off and went back to LISA. Can't get enough.

Just finished the game, caved-in and used Joy because I wanted to get at least one proper run in before the sequel comes out later this month. A few rough edges mostly due to it being a RPG Maker game and maybe felt a bit short, but man did I dig the trip I took with it all the same.

Really brutal ending too, though it took me awhile to realize how Lisa the First works into Lisa the Painful's plot (I initially assumed the two were mostly unrelated beyond similar themes and the obvious Earthbound-inspiration).
I'm not entirely sure besides Brad being a absolutely terrifying killing machine by the end-game why Buddy hated him as much as she did, unless it really was just due to every other guy she came across telling her not to trust him and/or he was being 'selfish'.

Also Harvey Fishman's scene is the first time in ages I've seriously broken into hysterics while playing a game. A really great mix of Earthbound's 'weirdness' with a much darker, adult theme that doesn't betray its inspirations. It'd be awesome if the sequel gets more attention and this dude can get some proper financing to make an even more ambitious project.

You gotta take somethings from Buddy's perspective rather than Brad's. He thought he was being a good protective father.
However, from her side,
this is the man who locked her up and raised her in a cave, never let her out (unless she was wearing a mask), and frequently took drugs. Sure there were good times, but add both the previous facts and everyone telling her how bad of a person Brad is, and I think that justifies her rant at the end.

I remember reading how the game dev admitted that oil combos were waay too strong. So yeah, if you want more of a challenge, enable hard mode, go joyless, and avoid oil combos.

I beat
Satan pretty easily with Terry, Nern and Shocklord. Never managed to land a status-effect on him but still beat him first time through without him ever doing a insta-KO move, so I similarly was kinda let down how easy the supposedly hardest boss in the game was. Probably didn't help most characters were already level 30 at that point, but it was still a bit weird after all the build-up. Didn't use any firebombs either since I opted to give all my items to Rando over losing another arm.

On the other hand a few of the later monstrosities seemed to pretty regularly land killing moves, but moreso than other RPG's I was fine with just restarting and redoing the fight until I got a clean run without losing anyone.
Tried doing the same in the Russian Roulette section and oh my god that RNG hates me so I gave up.

I was on pain mode/joyless.
And Brad had no arms.
The rest of the game was a breeze, but I kept using fire-based attacks. I only lost one character to a perma-kill move, before I began using gasoline spit.

Anyone on Windows 10 not able to bring up the Steam overlay using a 360 controller? My Xbox button now brings up the Xbox live bar, but only in LISA.

Since this game kinda has a cult following, any chance it may come to other platforms? Would be cool if it was on the vita. I bought it on PC but I hate playing games like this on the computer with a keyboard. I know it has controller support but it's not seamless.

The controller support is kinda poor honestly. Would be cool if it came elsewhere--not sure how easy to port RPG maker games are (especially since this one seems quite heavily modified) or if they have plans to port anyway. Would be nice for PS4/Vita though. I might buy on PS just for proper controller prompts...

Controller support is okay. The only place that's not so great are button prompts for combo attacks, which always display AWSD.

I'm trying to play Lisa the First on Win7 and my keys don't really do anything. I can cycle through the options at the main menu and I can make the girl walk upwards when I start the game but that's it.

I had a similar problem with Yume Nikki so I'm assuming it's some sort of compatibility issue with RPG Maker but I can't find any info to help me.

Anybody have any insight? I've been wanting to play this game.

This game and its sequel are on sale again on Steam for the Halloween sale.

Real tempted.

How's the sequel for the game?

bought this on the steam sale browsing around and holy smokes is it good. i'm only a couple hours in or so but i love it. everything about the game is awesome. also bought the dlc (lisa the joyful). never heard of whoever did this game but hope for more stuff like this!

Got about two hours in before I just couldn't play anymore. The story and world are amazing, but I just can't get into the combat or the world traversal.

Ended up watching a playthrough and feel like I got a much better experience than if I would have actually played the game.

i love the gameplay. very challenging and some old school rpg stuff. watching a playthrough isn't the same. there is so much random stuff that can happen. there is a part in the game where i used a campfire and
one of my party mates was abducted while sleeping by a gang. still haven't found him, but i will!

Just beat the game.

Amazing experience. Wish it had more recognition.

Humour, story, unique spells and abilities make this one of my favourites of all time.
