Wow, I thought that 'coming out' episode happened ages ago. It's probably not good for business when Fox reveales this stuff so far in advance that the news is ancient history by the time the episode airs.
fox jokes are good. why don't they start making jokes about how much their show sucks though? i would laugh at jokes that made fun of how the simpsons went down the shitter over the past 5 years. we get shit like the simpsons and american dad and fox cancels better shit like arrested development
Only funny jokes: The entire "Gay-o" song for being so stupid and hysterical...and Homer's "GAY MARRIAGE...now that I have your attention, I'm performing gay marriages" poster.
This wasn't addressed to me, but I'll do so anyways.
Here is my deep and illustrated wisdom; this episode was not a good episode for the following, in-depth and well illustrated reasons.
1. Issue over Substance
The entire thing was like "OMG, Gay Marriage, that's so rad!", much like the marijuana episode was "OMG, Homer has a Bong, that's so rad!". There was nothing smart or interesting about this episode. There was no plot element that wasn't a complete and total cliche. There was no real moment when something happened you didn't expect. There was no real moment where I gave a shit. There was no substance to this episode; we didn't get to see
the reaction to Patty being a Lesbian from SELMA, her TWIN SISTER until the day of her wedding. I don't give a shit if the show is focused around the family, we should have found out about that in a way other than Patty walking into the living room and telling them nonchalantly. Having a gay character like this has substance when it is the focus of the episode, instead of the issue. I mean, I wanted to see how her family reacted, how Skinner reacted, and how it affected everything. Instead, that important character moment was nothing but a sidenote in an episode about the hilarity of gay people getting married. An episode like the one where Maude Flanders died dealt with a huge character change in Ned and the focus of the episode was on this...this was just a shitty sidenote to a shitty episode.
2. The Simpsons are One-Dimensional caricatures of their former selves.
The funny parts of this episode were not in Homer's antics, but instead amongst the secondary characters, like Quimby. They were in the writing of various small moments, like the "Gay-O" video and Homer's posters. They weren't in the family though, which is becoming less interesting with each passing episode. When an episode is about the family, it is great because they have to appear human. The best episode of this season is the one where Bart becomes the financial backbone of the household, because it changes the dynamic and made for some great character moments and dialogue between characters. This episode was nothing but one big gag, and one that fell flat.
There is no question that The Simpsons is not producing as consistently as in the past, but there HAVE been good episode this season, and some great gags. But damnit if there also haven't been some large miscues and some crappy execution. Blame it on having less time, blame it on whatever you want. There were serious problems with this episode, and I am not of the mind that they're all this way. Bad execution, Al Jean. Bad.
I only get satellite out here and no PB, so can somebody sum up the episode? Do Ned Flanders and Apu actually turn gay? WTF? Way to ruin the characters...
This show is obviously written by writers who know comedy, but don't know The Simpsons. (on a side note, one of the writers admitted to NEVER seeing ONE episode of the Simpsons when he began writing for the show). This is the biggest reason why I'm jaded.
The jokes and the manner in which the characters act seem so far removed from the original characters. Would Homer make out with himself? I can imagine Peter Griffin (and it would have been 100 times funnier too) doing that, but not Homer.
The only times I laughed were when:
1) The fish-man came out of the water, it surprised me (in a show where the jokes are so predictable, it was nice to see)
2) The Gay Marriage...now that I got your attention sign
3) Krusty the Clown interrupting Kent Brockman's show, it was executed well.
3 laughs in a Simpson's episode made in the last 5 or so years...a new record!
Count me in on that 'Simpsons has gone dramatically downhill' bandwagon
BUT... this episode had a handful of funny moments. For the first time in a while I managed to just enjoy the show for what it is, rather than constantly realizing how different/worse it has become. Maybe because I was exhausted and delirious
And why was she not offended when The Critic said that MacGyver was gay? The answer is "They hope we forget the past, and ignore all past evidence, claiming that since it was almost 10 seasons ago they can get away with it".
