Nintendo DS Emulator for the PSP In Development

Source: PSPDomain
Pdsp-343x208

The people over at PSP Domain have announced that they have a running (somewhat) DS emulator for the PSP. Here is what they had to say:

Thats right decided to reveal that we are working on a Nintendo DS emulator for the psp. It is a port of the current build of iDeaS emulator for the Pc . As stated before this release is nowhere near finished and wont be for a while. It is currently running at about 4 fps and no sound it only runs a few demos and metroid intro and there is currently no controls. More on the 25th August. For the non believers i will post video as soon as my camcorder is back from repairs.

The psp is so powerful that it can emulate a DS? Man thats cracking me down, never thought of this.. so I will sell that piece of crap, who needs a DS when u can actually emulate it on your psp?

senseless bullshit [ ] | very usefull [x]

And then you could play touch screen games on your psp......... No, wait......... Maybe not. -_-

Sure you could, though it would be NOWHERE NEAR the same. The DS has fewer buttons, so mapping the stylus to the analog stick would actually work out.

Yes, I can see how it would play similarly.

Eh.

Oh man, I can't even imagine trying to play Kirby or Meteos with that analog nub.

It could work well if someone made it possible to use a mouse for PSP (but it would be hard to actually hold the PSP with your hands and play :P). They already made it possible to use keyboards for PSP after all. But somehow, it seems like the longer way around to play DS games. :lol

And people complained about comfortability with the touchscree, lets see them try to play a game with a mouse while holding the PSP. :lol

No kidding. I'd be shocked if folks were seriously considering this as an alternative to just getting a DS.

Of course it won't be practically usable with any software that extensively uses the touchscreen. I suppose it's quite an amusing exercise though, especially if it gets up to full speed (something I rather doubt).

-sigh-

As with many emulation projects, I don't think this is the case. People said this same thing when those GC emulators were being worked on. When dealing with newer systems, the point is usually to show off what you can do rather than create these emulators as a suitable replacement. Nobody interested in gaming on the GC was going to wait for the PC emulator, but it was very neat to see.

This is not going to be a viable DS replacement, but once again, it is very interesting.

Replacements for actual consoles only tend to come with time and only become replacements for A) the sake of convenience and B) enhancements.

How is holding a PSP with one hand and using a mouse/trackball with the other any much different from holding a DS with one hand and using the stylus? ;)

I don't have a problem with folks trying to emulate the DS. I'm just saying it would shocking if someone would fool around with this for any reason other than to see happen on the PSP.

I don't see how you could effectively map the stylus to the analog nub without some major extra coding on the emulator to allow a mouse-like cursor to indicate where on the screen the stylus is above, and then a button to indicate the stylus is touching the screen.

This will probably mainly be useful for games that don't really need the touch screen (Mario 64 DS, SW Ep III (you can do the force moves with button combos), Metroid: Hunters (there's a non-touch screen control method for it), etc.).

eh? is it really that hard to show a cursor?

Er.. have you ever hold a DS? There's as many buttons on a DS as on a psp..

4 face buttons, two shoulder buttons, try harder next time

DS has more buttons since it has touch screen :P

Well now the PSP will have some good games to play... *rimshot*

Try harder at what?

I'm actually right.

My initial point was in regards to how the stylus control would work. The DS has no analog stick, right? It was a suggestion on how it would be possible and it is correct.

His post makes it sound as if I were bashing the DS (why would that be considered a bash?). Why on earth are you even treating it like that?

Technically, I am correct, as there are physically more buttons on the PSP. You see it yourself. However, my point was simply regarding the analog stick, which I suppose isn't actually a button at all...soo...

Not including the stick or d-pad, there are 13 physical buttons on PSP and 9 physical buttons on NDS.

dark10x: it'd be impossible to play much of the DS library without a toucn-and-release analogue system such as a stylus or a mouse.

The numb is not a button.. technically I suppose you can map functions to it (in the emulator) but beside using it as a stylus alternative there's not much to do with it...

And I did not take you comments as bashing or trash talk... just that well... I seriously can't see how the DS can be considered as having less buttons than a PSP...

Did I ever say otherwise?

Good lord, these reactions are...shocking.

Count them.

"Mapping the stylus to the analogue would work out."

:p

Don't get so damn defensive--I was just pointing out an error in your generalization.

if you count the buttons you "play" with they are about the same.

EXACTLY, but emulation generally works best with additional buttons for functionality.

psp_frontb.jpg

13 buttons, but not all designed for gameplay. TECHNICALLY SPEAKING, regardless of what they are intended for, there are more buttons on PSP. That's all there is to it.

Matlock, "working out" does not mean "working well"...as I said in that same post. Without that stick, it would be 100% impossible to control the stylus pointer. With it, the possibility is there. That does not mean it would work well, but nobody is expecting this emulator to be anywhere near playable anyways. It's a neat trick. Nothing more.
