For the uninitiated, Junji Ito is one of the most prolific, if not the greatest horror writer to come out of Japan. Most famous for his books "Gyo" and "Uzumaki", Ito is a master of psychological horror and slowly getting under your skin with his illustrations and twisted characters. A mix between Lovecraft and Twilight Zone, if you have any love of the medium or horror you want to check his books out. As a fan, I was shocked to come across this (fan?) YouTube account that adapts a few of his stories into motion comics to great success, and I wanted to share with you one of my favorites:

Each of these books can be found on Amazon.com for $20 and are oversized. If you love the video please pick up one or all of these books, you will not be disappointed!

Also, relevant obligatory cat gif for Ito:

(If you're into lighthearted stuff, his cat diary is really cute and a complete 180 from his other manga)

Just finished watching the video, damn. It was very good.

The fucking doctor. I kinda expected Mami to have the long dreams as well, not being administered with the stuff I the crystals, damn psycho.

The first thing I remember reading from him was Gyo (I remember seeing that guy slamming the door after watching the shark in the hallway macro in 4chan), and was very interested in the animated adaptation. Hear it was awful, though. :/

His stuff is kinda dumb. I only really like the one with the holes.

The stories are greatly fantastical, but the art is enough to get into anyone's nightmares.

I actually started reading Uzumaki for the first time the other day, about 9 chapters in. I'll check this out after.

I actually have all three of those hardcovers. I absolutely adore his work, thanks for posting this.

Easily one of my favorite writers/artists- finding out he was involved with Silent Hills after it was canceled was honestly pretty heartbreaking.

His stuff is kinda dumb. I only really like the one with the holes.

I get where you're coming from with this. His stuff kind of has a kitschy B-movie feel to it (Gyo especially), but the way he illustrates his stories is what really elevates them in the creepy bizarre factor.

Everything just dwells on this surreal plane, and his exists between goofy and freaky. I can see that wouldn't click with some people though, so I get it for sure.

Junji Ito endings, though... sometimes they're good, sometimes they just end.

Pretty fun stories. Long Dream is kind of creepy for me since some dreams do feel drawn out.

Hanging Balloons is legit scary.

I really like Junji Ito but watching the motion comic just made me impatient, I feel the delivery pace is too slow. Maybe I'm just used to reading manga.

Uzumaki is his best piece of work.

Agreed, 3 volumes of really creepy, weird stuff of spiral goodness.

The Enigma of Amigara Fault is my favourite of his short story.

Don't know why, but also like how some of his stories have a great building but also an anticlimactic ending, like that spooky house of horrors story.

Holy shit.

I love Ito and own loads of his works. Did not know this channel existed. Thank you for bringing it up OP!

I watched the film adaptation of Uzumaki, and....never again.

I started seeing everything in spirals.

That movie legit scare the shit out of me. Didn't want to do laundry in the basement for a good 2 weeks afterwards.

The movie was nice visually, but ultimately was too short to fully encapsulate the immense horror of a town slowly spiraling into madness.

Edit: Uzumaki stands above all his other work for me because the story itself is self contained, and has a proper beginning and an ending. The build up and climax ties in wonderfully with the theme of spirals, and it's rare for Ito to explore a protagonist who isn't actually isn't fucked up.

ordered the cat book.

that only leaves Museum Of Terror 3 and Flesh Colored Horror to complete my Ito collection, but fuck paying those prices.

If I like Junji Ito work, I'll like Kung Fu Panda. That makes sense, I guess?

Holy shit, they re-published some of his stuff in hardcover? Sold!

Ok, I literally just went on Amazon and bought Uzumaki and Gyo for the second time, as well as Fragments of Horror which I've never read before, and the Cat Diary for good measure, which I've only read bootlegged online before. :/

Thanks a lot for this thread... :p

double jump

you haven't lived until a random little kid ask you "how do you make love".
wow that was great. Wish these were real movies or mini series but they'd just screw them up. Junji ito is an evil genius.

Semblance

shhh Graham I'm still compiling this Radiant map
Alright! Ordered off Amazon now.
Edit: It also gave me Kung Fu Panda free for that order for some reason.

Should post your thoughts whenever you read it! I'd be curious to hear what you think.

How gross-out are his works? I remember seeing a sample of Gyo in a Newtype and thought "no thanks".

He's from the Umezu school of gross fuckery, so expect some detailed body horror, a love of suddenly flipping out on the reader, and super shady expressions. He can get pretty mean, but there's always this quirkiness to it all, even the nastier bits. Gyo is not even close to his messiest work though, so you probably won't care if you dig deeper.

Just got my copy of Uzumaki in and surprised it's thicker than my Cold Steel LE.

This makes my second hardcover manga though and they look pretty nice. There should be more IMO.

Love how creepy his worlds are, how easy and entertaining his panels flow by.

My only issue is that while the scares are great, the endings are usually hit and miss.

LONG DREAM - creepy as fuck once it gets going on. Great end shock. A bit too long, though.

GLYCERINE (?) - the grossness of the setting was fantastic, but ultimately a bit too unrealistic. You would think the kids could have done something about it, though it does seem almost supernatural. The last 3rd is kind of weird - he seemed to be going for one thing, then another, then wasn't sure what was going to happen.
