Lookin for a gameplay game... attempt at defining inside

In the past year I've been getting back into gaming after a decent hiatus.

Prime2, Riddick, Ninja Gaiden, Doom3, MGS3, RE4, Monkey Ball, Ratchet and Clank 1&2 are all some great recent games I've played.

However more and more, I'm just looking for a game I can just pop in, play, have a blast with, and continue to make progress without too much difficulty. Don't get me wrong, I like the occasional challenge, but I hate games that "somehow" (the part I can't define) arbitrarily halt progress. I also am lacking much time to play these days so gameplay is the word of the day.

Two games that definitely fall into this category for me are Super Monkey Ball and Ratchet and Clank series. They're essentially easy enough (or barrier free enough) to just pop in, play for awhile, have fun, not get frustrated, make progress, save and stop til next time. SMB was perfect because once you got the unlimited continues, it became new every stage, and screwing up only costs you a few minutes of your time. I must add that Super Monkey Ball became frustrating at Expert level 6 which I cannot pass for the life of me, including with infinite continues, but until this point I was enthralled. R&C is beautiful because you get infinite lives, liberal continue points, save anywhere and not get set back too far, and some fun old school gameplay. Constant progress, good humor, new weapons, and fun new items made it rewarding to move on.

Not too easy, not too hard, rewarding, and fun. Story is optional.

any rhythm game

I second Katamari Damacy. It's so easy to play. The game is fairly short, but the replay value is where it's at. I'll be able to pull Katamari Damacy out in a month/six months/next year and enjoy it.

>50 Hours, just pure old-school arcade-like fun, and very much pick-up-and-play. Brilliant design.

If sports is an option, this game is pure gameplay-

, >100 Hours w/ WE7 (8 just came out in North America), 10 minute matches, I was learning new stuff and trying new things in my hundredth hour of play. For some examples of what you can do, a couple of my videos from WE7- 1, 2.

And some great videos of WE8 Socreges linked to in the official thread:

You don't even have to be a soccer fan to appreciate the greatness of WE, none of my friends are.
