Hey all,

I'm looking for good eastern music... I don't really have much of a set of requirements other than it's not dance or sound-alike U.S.-style pop with vocals in a different language.

Essentially, I'm looking for music with instrumentation that "sounds like" it comes from its native country. Whether it's modern music or more classic music is fine. I wish I could put my finger on what it is I'm looking for, but that's about as well as I can do. Last time I looked, I found mainly folk music.

Hmmm...

Vas -- Offerings is a very good album.

Axiom of Choice

I don't understand anything, and I doubt you will either, but it sounds cool. :p

Both btw are available at the iTunes music store. Even if you don't have/want iTunes I suggest you d/l it (it's free) and listen to their samples-- 30 seconds of each song. iTunes >> Amazon.

Erm... it doesn't quite fit the description of what you're looking for, but give Muslimgauze a listen anyway. The albums "Lo-Fi India Abuse", "Zouriff Moussa", "Hussein Mahmood Jeeb Tehar Gass", and maybe "Vote Hezbollah" are recommended.

Dan the Automator put out two albums of licsenced (and very minorly tweaked) Bollywood soundtrack records.

Bombay the Hard Way and Bombay the Hard Way 2 (which I think is more remixey, so probably not what you want.

Well without really knowing much about Indian and Middle Eastern Music, the first place to look would be Ravi Shankar.
Also you would be hard pressed to find some 'modern' music from these countries that haven't been influenced by the west especially Bollywood.

Anyway while on this topic does Panjabi MC- Raat Da Na Bole (summertime remix) is one of best 'bhangra' remixes of a Hip-Hop song I've heard. Only if somebody could cut it up and lay Will Smith's vocals on the top of it :(

KARSH KALE - this music is incredible. I suggest getting both of these albums:

There are four major strands of indian music right now. Bollywood (filmi), punjabi (bhangra), traditional and crossover (western music with indian lyrics) artists. Bollywood music is just the standard overdramatic fare you see in musicals, with REALLY basic lyrics if you knew what they were saying. Bhangra is essentially indian party music, it's very positive and uplifting. Nowadays it's becoming more modern with better production values and so on. Traditional and crossover are pretty self explanatory.

I'd suggest you check out the allmusic guide for a list of key artists.

Check out anything by A.R Rahman on any mp3 file sharing service. Man is a god.

In my personal top three soundtrack composers.

Yep.. just heard his soundtrack for a Chinese movie, Warriors of Heaven and Earth.. Really good stuff, with a very nice title track sung by Jolin Tsai.

Also try: Dil Se, Lagaan, Taal, or Bombay Dreams (English versions of some old hits plus some new ones too...)

Heh. The reason I thought to ask is 'cause I was listening to Secret Chiefs in the car yesterday...

And they're just faux Middle Eastern music. But I think they're great.

I don't know who to listen to for a similar sound. The new album would be great if they didn't have those damn death metal tracks. They had a GREAT thing going on with Book M. Some of those tracks are so incredible and catchy.

first of all, get this:

B00000IA3A.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...f=sr_1_1/002-5712313-1224867?v=glance&s=music

psychedelic sitar rock from the late 60s/early 70s crafted by ananda shankar, ravi's cousin.

next, what you want is stuff by "nusrat fateh ali khan", he was the first one to really fuse western and kawaali together. many many european and american DJs have worked with him and remixed his stuff, he also sang with pearl jam on the "dead man walking" soundtrack.
some albums to check out:
"night songs"
"love songs"
look in amazon, you'll find some collections which might be best to start off with.

next you want some zakir hussein:
albums:
"essence of rythm"
"selects"
"hazir"

then you want some jagjit singh. just search in amazon.

and if you want some sufi music (mystical islam...the "cool" islam that includes wining and sex) fused with a hint of led zeppelin, you wanna check out pakistani rock band, junoon.

and of course artists like karsh kale, talvin singh, midival punditz, nitin sawhney, tabla beat science, black star liner and Tj Rehmi should be checked out. but they are all "ethnic" techno and not classical indian music.

i cant recommend junoon enough. ive found most pakistani rock bands to have similar guitar riffs and similar sounding songs and sounds but its thier singing that puts them over the top. most every song is different and there is so much emotion in them. the voice pattern is never the same..it doesnt seem formulaic. dont know how to explain it but i think its noticable.
