Ok...about to get a 5.1 (7.1 actually) sound card and need some headphones to go along with it--i would like to get speakers but the fuckers next door are already trying to get me evicted for 'disturbing the peace' so now I'm looking toward 5.1 headphones

alright:

I need a pair of 5.1 headphones that offer good sound quality...they don't have to sound perfect but at least have respectable bass. They also need to NOT exceed $130 in price.

I already have my eyes on a few but would like outside opinions, thanks!

err... 5.1 headphones... unless you're going to watch a shitload of movies it's not worth it. the only 5.1 headphones that are worth the money go for about 350 or more.

best get this!

the ultimate movie/game headphones. great for electronica and hiphop as well. not so great with rock music and such. these are the only headphones on the market as far as i know that have a subwoofer effect to them

Not to ask a dumb question, but...how do you make "5.1" headphones? By definition, that seems almost impossible. (I'm picturing someone wearing two pairs of headphones simultanously, with a bass tube stuffed into their ass. PLEASE tell me that's wrong.)

Wouldn't it be the job of the sound card to do the processing down from a 5.1 feed into 2-channel stereo?

teepo, I feared an answer like this but am still going through with it :D

Basically I think you're looking for stereo headphones with good soundstage and decent bass *however* not so bass heavy that it drowns everything else out. Also open or closed?

Do a search on head-fi and they should point you to a direction.
Also you have to consider impedance and frequency response.
I think you can't go wrong (from hearsay) with the Sennheiser 280Pro (Phoenix has these) or Audio-Technica A500 and some Beyer and AKG Models. Although they are opinions and you should really take a listen for yourself. I think the only problem with these is that they might not have the bass kick you want- but you could always eq them up.

I've tried the Zalman Surround sound headphones. They are in truth very poor for listening to any music or DVDs. Don't trust reviews on computer websites- most of the reviewers have never listened to a good pair of headphones and don't realize how poor the sound they are getting is.

You are probably best off with a good set of Sennheiser or Grado cans. Head-fi (link above) is a good place to look for more advice.

Forget getting "5.1 headphones", just get a nice pair of stereo headphones and use Dolby Headphone either through software or hardware decoding.
