I haven't been following this...

what did they do to JGL's face? the prosthetic actually seems to work and he does look like Bruce. But I'm just wondering what sort of trickery are they doing.

I started thinking after seeing the Loopers trailer before TDKR...

If your future self is sent back in time, and you don't kill him, and then you are killed because of that "mistake," what happens? You are dead, your future self does not exist, therefore you would have had no reason to kill him and would not have been killed for failing to kill him.

It's a weird twist on the idea of breaking causality. Not sure if this has been discussed.

Pretty sure this is going to be part of the point of the film. So, good you're thinking about it, but it's not like we can get an "answer" until the film's out.

Right. I was hoping that would be the case but was not sure, as the trailers so far indicate it is mostly an action movie.

Hey, ideally it'll be a well-written action movie, and a well-written movie would address issues like that. Whether that's by showing what would happen or by persuading the viewer to think it's not important, it'll at least subtly address it.

The film will open TIFF.

The later half of 2012 is much more exciting than I thought it was gonna be. There are so many good movies coming out.

This one looks stellar. The buzz from the industry screenings got me really hyped.

Yeah, saw this tweet today:

had the incredible opportunity to watch looper today.one of the best time travel movie since primer & one of the best in 2012!

So Johnson finally made a good movie? Brick was a great concept marred by poor execution and BB was just.....forgettable.

GTFO.

But yes, this is getting more universal praise and opening a prestigious fest. So looks to be "better" although it'll be hard to live up to his earlier work for me.

The only thing I remember about Brothers Bloom is that I saw it and that Rachel Weisz was adorable in it. That's about it. Brick was definitely better.

Brothers Bloom > Brick

Correct choice.

I do agree with Solo that Rian Johnson is not a great filmmaker, but he's one of the most promising/exciting. You can see he has untapped inventiveness & potential and his films are always something to behold visually. I feel like he has a masterpiece inside him, but could be a decade away.

Rian Johnson is an interesting director but a cringeworthy writer. I'd be interested in seeing him film someone else's scripts than his own.

While in the mood of dogging promising directors with two movies to their name and another coming out later this year...I didn't really like The Town. At least to the same extent everybody else did. I can't even remember anything about it outside the bank robbery masks and Renner.

Yeah, pretty much this. Also on top of that I felt JGL was horrendously miscast in Brick. His character was supposed to be like a high school Bogart, and JGL is no Bogart.

The hell is going on in that lighter gif?

And JGL pulled off the noir hero archetype in Brick. The writing definitely wasn't top notch but it's directed pretty well. Haven't seen BB yet.

Whoa the buzz for this movie is good? The trailers make the film seem like a lame action movie imo. It kind of reminds me of that movie Jumper.

it's a time travel actioner with an extremely popular young actor and an older super star directed by a rising director. don't get how that doesn't make sense tbh

The script for Looper is definitely a weak point. The premise was really cool and the world building was interesting, and even the characters were passable, but the actual narrative was kind of overly straightforward and a rehash of past ideas in a bad way.

How...in...the...what? Seriously rewatch both of those trailers side by side.

Well i've only seen the trailers in the theaters, wil check to see if these newer ones make it look better.

I don't mean to say that the movie looks like Jumper, but my initial reaction to looper was "cheesy action movie with interesting concept". History has taught me that these usually do not turn out that well so I wrote it off in my head.

Never seen Brink or Brothers Bloom so I can't speak for the director, but you make it sound like having a popular young actor and an aging action star = awesome. Jumper had Hayden and Samuel L Jackson didn't it, and was directed by Liman who did a great job with Bourne Identity. To be fair though, I enjoyed Jumper just a little bit :x

edit: like I said though, I am more than willing to look at the movie with an open mind again, so no need to convince me. I like JGL will probably end up watching the movie anyway.

I actually really enjoyed Jumper outside of Hayden's wooden acting. It wasn't particularly good, but I found it to be an entertaining way to burn an hour and a half.

I said having those makes people excited for it, cause you were confused as to why anyone was hyped at all. you're extrapolating actual quality of the entire film from two trailers when trailers are factually useless. it could turn out as bad as jumper. making that comparison now is one hundred percent pointless, really

By "buzz" I meant early reviews from screenings, and has nothing to do with people being excited just because of those involved. My bad if that's not how it came across. I was surprised because the trailers made it look bad to me. Not pointless at all.

How was the dialogue though? That's what drives me nuts about Johnson's other two movies, I can't stand the words coming out of everyone's mouths.

Doug Liman always makes entertaining movies.

He definitely does.

I'm interested in what he does with All You Need is Kill, which is another movie with a rather pedestrian script despite having an interesting premise and world. Having Tom Cruise star will definitely help... hopefully it's undergone dozens of rewrites though.

It also seems he's making a Jumper 2, which I think is completely unneeded and rather boneheaded considering the first didn't make a splash in the box office lol... (edit: actually, it seems like it did well overseas)

Edit:

I could hear the writer speaking through every character if that makes sense.

Why did they even bother with the makeup? Does anyone think they succeed at making him resemble a young Bruce Willis? He just looks like a mutant version of himself.

I think its pretty darn good. You'd prefer them using Bruce Willis in both roles, with his younger self wearing a hairpiece and TRON Legacy level CG-ing of the face?
