I think its pretty darn good. You'd prefer them using Bruce Willis in both roles, with his younger self wearing a hairpiece and TRON Legacy level CG-ing of the face?
In my opinion the makeup looks horrible. That is my sentiment more than anything else.

I honestly would have been fine with makeup-less JGL. I can suspend disbelief as an audience member, but that makeup is just a distraction.

Ignoring the fact that JGL isn't Willis.(i know, shocking.) I think from what we've seen JGL does a great job impersonating Willis. It is much preferable than some CG face on some dudes body.

I never said it should be CG. I just said it looks horrible and not like Willis.

For what it's worth, I think this looks much worse than Jeff Bridges in Tron.

....ehhh the obvious choice here would have been to age-up JGL with makeup. Not this...weirdness.

I HATE seeing movies in the theater and due to various reasons have changed from going 2-3 times a month to 2-3 times a year, will probably go see this in theater.

you guys are going to the tiff? go watch to the wonder!

Killing me that I can't go this year. This would be my top 10 I'd want to see (not including stuff at Cannes):

10. The Company You Keep
9. Frances Ha
8. Much Ado About Nothing
7. Foxfire
6. Spring Breakers
5. Passion
4. At Any Price
3. Something in the Air
2. The Place Beyond the Pines
1. To the Wonder

Empire gives it 5/5 also, but this preview from Twitch was interesting:

Full reviews will launch on September 8th, but for now be pleased to know that the film surpasses even elevated expectations. Joseph Gordon Levitt continues his string of impeccable choice of roles, and Bruce Willis hasn't been this great in almost a decade. This Twelve Monkeys/La Jettée meets The Terminator via The Shining is an absolute joy to watch, with the filmmakers at every turn showing how in control of their material they are.

Accessible to a general audience while still having moments that will warm any film geek's heart, this is the kind of genre film that elevates the form. With feigned effortlessness, the filmmakers have managed to mess around with a pile of tired tropes and clichés, coming out in the end with something that feels entirely new and fresh.

Quite simply, Looper does for high concept time traveling flicks what Raiders of the Lost Ark did for Action/Adventure serials.

It's not to be missed.

Wha?

...huh

I mean, I think looper looks good but that review is ridiculous

Yeah, that hype is just wild. Thankfully, we'll truly be able to know next week when everyone from TIFF gets to weigh in.

Also Rian Johnson handpicked his fav. critics for the screening last night, so lame.

Empire's five star review has somehow piqued my interest, despite the fact that I totally disagreed with their five star reviews of Marley, The Imposter and The Dark Knight Rises. I'm in.

Early rave reviews now in:

Holy crap this movie is awesome. That's how I'm going to start this, because it's really the first thing that came to mind as the credits started rolling. It also came to mind multiple times while watching it, during some of the badass action moments, and during some of the more brilliant, but not overly complex, time travel elements. Filmmaker Rian Johnson's third feature film (after Brick and The Brothers Bloom) is Looper, an excellent time travel sci-fi action adventure starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a mobster in the past who meets himself from the future. And oh, is it awesome.

The complexity of that sentence, uttered several times throughout the brilliant new time travel movie ‘Looper‘ reflects the complexity of the film, which is as thorough and as thrilling an exploration of the philosophical issues around time travel as has ever been put to screen. It’s also an incredibly suspenseful sci-fi noir. In other words: it’s pretty damn good.

Looper is the best sci-fi movie of the year so far. There, it’s been said. Rian Johnson’s latest is slick, inventive and at times explosive, culminating in a film that challenges its audience to think outside the box. This is a movie that’s smart, scary and romantic, offering a little piece of everything to chew on. Reinventing the time travel movie while paying homage to the best before it, Looper feels like multiple films rolled into one; a tight, hip, deliciously-engaging thriller that will leave you wondering about your own future self and whether they’ll be as foreign to you as the future is to us now.

@thesubstream

Holy mackerel if I don't see a movie I like more than LOOPER at #TIFF12 I'll still be perfectly happy. What a start

@colliderfrosty:

can finally talk about @rcjohnso's LOOPER. It's fantastic. A smart, original, sci-fi movie that's destined to be a classic.

@RichardYoungRY

#Looper was awesome. Great way to kick off #TIFF12 #Tiff2012 !

@BradBrisco:

Loved loved loved loved Looper. Great job @rcjohnso, @hitRECordJoe, @kidblue, @traciethoms et al

@TheInSneider

@rcjohnso's LOOPER is pretty damn awesome. It's original, there's some very cool action & most importantly, heart.

I always forget that he directed Brothers Bloom which I really liked. With all those rave reviews, hype level is rising!

@spittin_nickels:

BAIL OUT.

I'm more inclined to believe this one for some reason. People seem to go head over heels for high concept science fiction films that are pseudo intelligent and make them feel equally intelligent for watching, like Inception, and overrate them in the process.

I just can't for the life of me see the script I read turning into the movie that all of these reactions are describing, except for the possibility that everything but the narrative and dialog are truly top notch.

Yea it looks like it will be well directed and stylish film, but so much of it just sounds stupid and illogical.

I don't even really care about the illogicalness of the concept so much as I do as the consistency of the narrative and dialog. The first and second acts of the script were decent, albeit by the numbers in terms of chase films are concerned - outside of a few novel science fiction wrinkles, and the 3rd act was complete shit and reintroduced a (dumb and needless) narrative aspect that took center stage... completely ruining the tail end of the film in the process.

Slash film wrote: "The second act takes things in an exciting direction featuring brand new time-travel ideas we’ve never seen before, and by the third act, you feel like you’re watching a whole new movie with a different tone and pacing that feels both wholly singular yet completely related and informed by the first two acts." which suggests that the 3rd act remains unchanged, and I'm interested in how a lot of you will react to it.

Here's a review that complains about the 3rd act: http://www.indiewire.com/article/ti...s-looper-is-both-impressive-and-underwhelming

The first hour displays a brilliant elaboration on the noir antics demonstrated in "Brick," but the movie's later scenes stumble in a mass of half-formed ideas.

WHAT THE FUCK?!

First time I've heard of director's commentary in a cinema. Is this for people who've already seen it?

Kevin Smith was the first to do it for Clearks II, IIRC. You download the MP3, put it on your device, and play it during the movie. And yes, it's intended for people who saw it already.

Uhm. Where does Joseph Gordon Lewitt fit in in all this? I've watched two trailers and he's nowhere to be seen. Is he supposed to be the youngest version of Bruce Willis, or what? Or are Rian and him so much alike?

?

He's the lead. He's the guy who looks EXACTLY LIKE JGL BUT WITH A PROSTHETIC NOSE.
