Lord of the Rings | 4K HDR versus 1080p | What do you think ?

Yup. I like the new look. The old pics have that warm brown look. Much prefer the cooler look to the image.

Want to watch HDR content but only have a SDR display? Many TVs and media players can do the conversion, but what if you're using a PC/laptop?

Pleb mode: download mpv Player and turn up the gamma a bit

Patrician mode: MPC-BE using madVR as video renderer (you set this up in MPC-BE’s Video section in Options after you install both). I'm pretty sure this is not an option on Mac, but please check.

Open a video, right click it, Filters – madVR renderer – Edit Settings. Find your screen under Devices and choose the correct type. There’s a drop-down menu under your device’s name (also opens if you double click it). Start there and make your way down the other menus (processing, scaling algorithms etc). Use these settings for correct HDR-to-SDR conversion:

- Screen properties: RGB Output - PC Levels, bitdepth 8bits, 3D format auto

- Screen calibrations: This display is already calibrated: Following gamut DCI-P3, Gamma pure power curve 2.20.

-HDR: tone map HDR using pixel shaders : 100 nits, BT2390, balanced, low, measure each frame's peak luminance

In scaling algorithms :

- Chroma jinc / imager downscaling jinc / upscaling jinc

Also, use AC3Filter for correct audio conversion if you watch a 5.1/7.1 file and you only have 2 speakers.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

I'm really really really impressed with The Hobbit movies. They adjusted the color timing to better match LOTR and it's a massive improvement.

Man now I gotta buy them again. I can watch these movies over and over. Nothing gives me the same vibes as this trilogy and OT Star Wars trilogy.

I picked it up from Best Buy. I only had a chance to watch the first disc of Fellowship so far (going to catch the second half tonight), but it is staggering how much better it looks and sounds compared to standard bluray. Since I had never seen the extended versions prior it almost felt like I was watching a new movie.

The removal of the weird blue and green tint in favor of natural lighting makes so much difference, and that's before you even get into the finer detail, rescanned VFX in 4K, etc.

I still want it, but its a shame about some of the transfer flaws. I'll probably wait for a sale. $50 was the sweet spot on the extended BLU set, so hopefully around 60 for this one.

Ok finishing the Extended Hobbit trilogy now. The third movie is still completely useless and when Gandalf goes to the High Fels I still want to throw my TV out the window in rage, but the look of the movies is MUCH better now and meshes very well with the LOTR trilogy. Even the CG orcs look better and less out of place than they did in the original and BD transfers.

The extra clarity is definitely going to help when Frodo comes back to The Shire, clothes torn and eyes red from tears...or his naked body is found dumped in some swamp. In the top pic, that could literally be any old pervy wizard, but the bottom pic clearly shows that it’s Gandalf The Grey.

We’ll also be able to identify the witness in the foreground much more easily. That’s gonna nail Gandalf to the goddamn wall, boys.

Slam dunk case.

Well yea there's that...

Tag, you're it.
Just finished The Fellowship of the Ring, it was awesome. The IQ is so good you can see every details and the love that has been put for the creation of those movies. I can't wait to watch The Two Tower

They leave in the car and stuff like extras with sunglasses?

I'm of the opinion that gaffes like that should stay, at least in the theatrical cut, versus endless lucas style "revisions". But it is a minor sin to clean that stuff up.

Yes and you can still see Arwen at Helm's Deep.

Just watched FotR last night in 4K/HDR on my OLED CX and the HDR looks stunning, almost like watching again for the first time. Some of the scenes with 90s/20s era special effects looked worse due to the higher fidelity and some of the scenes looked like kids doing a role play with an iPhone 12's video camera set to 4K.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I have been far more busy than expected and have only had a chance to finish the first disc of FOTR Extended. For the most part I am happy with it but it reminds me a bit of the Forest Gump 4K release in this its just inconsistent at times with its clarity. You can literally go from a scene thats amazingly sharp to significantly less detail and focus. Its really not THAT big of a deal but I definitley notice it.

The HDR is still the stand out to me in this scenario. The Atmos mix is up there as well. Rivendale had some awesome background effects.

FOTR is the only unquestionably worthwhile improvement. The aliasing is gone like in MetalAlien's post above shows.

There are two crowds: the ones who want see an image that looks great on their TV, and those who see the the film as a historical artifact. I'm in the latter camp. I love film grain, it's not just random thermal noise, it contains information.

I finally got my copy of this today and promptly sat down to watch FOTR.

The image quality improvement is just incredible. FOTR was by far the worst of the 3 films on Blu-ray and this 4K remaster cleans up all the problems with the previous release, including the notorious Matrix Green color grade. It now looks closer to how it looked in theaters than it ever has. For a now 20 years old movie, it holds up exceptionally well even during the (at the time groundbreaking) massive crowds CG sequences. The HDR conversion is pleasing although since it's created from SDR content it's not a big showcase for HDR, though the increased color depth and range is certainly welcome.

The newly mixed Dolby Atmos soundtrack is still the same FOTR we know and love, back when we all realized that Morgoth's greatest contribution to creating the Balrogs was to make sure they were filled with gigantic amounts of bass so they could shake your room when they roared.

I can't wait to see TTT tomorrow.

+ Good HDR range making use of the brightness and dark points

- Rarely exceeds Rec.709 colour grading, often at the edge and exceeds in a few scenes (still better than the Blu-ray)
- Slight criticism for the DNR

Is there anywhere to buy the 4k version digitally? Amazon and Play store are sorta confusing about which version you're actually getting.

We're talking about the 4K UHD Blu-rays.

The original content is standard SDR which is upconverted to HDR so while they were able to add some nice bits of peak brightness where appropriate, it's not really possible to add color gamut which didn't exist in the original source material. These movies are almost 20 years old now and were made very early in the development of the 2K DI process, the original FOTR was even finished 30% on film because of this! And yes, the movies were made to Rec.709 spec because DCI P3 wasn't even finalized as a gamut spec until several years after these movies were made.

The Two Towers looks just as outstanding as FOTR, actually it's more consistent since now the entire film was properly finished with 2K DI unlike FOTR. The amount of detail in the many close up shots is probably the most amazing thing about these remasters, I'm pretty sure the actors would be impressed by how good they look if they watched themselves in this movie again with these releases. It's obvious how much improved the CGI was between the first 2 films too with this resolution upgrade, sure it's still 2K CGI but the amount of actor detail in each individual rendered model is clearly improved over the first film.

Really? Is there a link to all these errors?

It's one shot after they run out of the tower:
ttt_arwen4.jpg

Originally Arwen was the one who brought the Elves to Helm's Deep and they filmed her taking part in the battle. They later changed that, but one quick shot of her in the background remains.

When I go to hdr settings color tweaks and highlight recovery are greyed out

Check if they become available once you disable "compromise on tone & gamut mapping accuracy" under rendering - trade quality for performance (you should disable everything here anyway).

What the FUCK did they do to Arwen's Fate scene?! The grading is completely different and a shitty vignette was added :messenger_hushed: :messenger_hushed: :messenger_hushed: That's one of my favourite scenes and it's ruined :messenger_hushed:

Oh no the Boromir scene too lmao

I bought the extented version of first movie from Google Play for 10 euros few day ago. It says 4K and HDR on the store page.

They didn’t add a vignette.

It's a shitty vignette around the edges like it's filmed with a very old thick lens.

They fucked with ROTK and the AUJ prologue too (I still have two movies to watch). Sucked out all life from old Dale.
TTT got the short end of the stick with the flashback and dream changes, plus new colours for Osgiliath to bring it in line with ROTK and a darker, colder Helm's Deep before the battle (the crebain scene sticks out).

I saw each movie in theaters 12 times. The 4K versions is how they’re supposed to look. The Blu-Rays were a disaster.

I just watched through the 4k EEs on an LG CX. Overall the 4k set is better than the standard bluray set. Both versions have their advantages and disadvantages, but I would always recommend the 4k set assuming you have a proper 4k tv to watch them on.

The 4k set is pretty nice. Glad to own the definitive home release for these movies. Most scenes look markedly better than the 1080p discs and some of the outdoor vistas look spectacular. Colors are much more true to life in general.

The extended editions are largely a waste of time though. The added scenes were left out for a reason and these cuts are just too long.

How dare you sir! Extend editions are the only way to watch

I love the EE. But it is still heartbreaking we get no Tom Bombadill. Even though I know he doesn’t fit into the overall narrative he was such a cool dude in the book.

I would also agree coming from dvd to 4K, is a remarkable leap.
