Kill me if old but I just saw an interview w/ him on g4 (techtv) bitching basically that once he delivered the news to EA that a ps2 port of the latest oddworld game would not turn out well, they pulled out all advertising support from the xbox version.

See, unlike fanboys, EA knows a thing or 2 bout bizness. Can't wait to c what will happen between ps3/xbox 360. :D
 
I think Microsoft's plan was to save money by killing the people from Starbreeze, Oddworld Inhabitants, and Doublefine before these games can be ported.

Let's see...the interview posted on GAF was with the Hollywood Reporter, not G4 and was done on the 16th. GAF reported on it on the 17th. The G4 interview took place yesterday and aired today. Yeah, it really took a time machine for all that to happen.

I said, jokingly, that GAF is so fast the questions and answers from the G4 interview had already been posted before they even occurred, thus Lanning learned about his future by visiting GAF and reading his own answers before answering the questions he was about to get in the future.

Yeah, ever since Lanning tried to get on his high horse about his "lofty" reasons for moving Oddworld from PS2 to Xbox he's come across as nothing but a jerk after it failed to garner huge sales.

He's just reaping the consequences of his own actions.

I'm not aware there is some rule that Oddworld fans were required to buy an Xbox when Lanning moved the game from the PS2.

In fact, I don't think Lanning has taken responsibility for anything "unfortunate" that's happened to his company and oddworld since after the console switch was announced.

You actually expect people to go out and buy a system for this game? It's good, but its by no means a system seller. No Oddworld game ever was. They benefited from being on a fanbase that was big and diverse.

Not at all, but "if" you were a fan of the old PS1 games you had a choice to buy an xbox and play the next 2 games in the series.

This is a business plain and simple. The notion that there is integrity in business is simply stupid. Oddworld Inhabitants took "the money hat" because it looks after them. Anyone who thinks a company should make any sort of allegiance and not sell out is just a silly fanboy.

Oh and for the record, OSW is one of the best games this generation. Its better than good though i agree its no system seller.
 
They should have allegiance because they only had a niche fanbase. That's a fanbase that's not going to follow a game where it goes. It's not a huge fanbase where no matter what system it ends up on people are going to go there. They had a decision, your fanbase or instant money. We all know what they took and now we know where they ended up for it.
 
I thought the 2d Oddworld games were actually better.

But I still can't believe EA, Sony or anyone else had any faith in Lorn and his team after they trashed the PS2's tech when they realized that coding for it at a quality level wasn't going to happen.

He rightfully got served his own spoiled milk.

How did oddworld sell on xbox ? what 410,000. Thats hardly great but after all it was a niche title right on the wrong console ?

The point here is that EA hamstrung OWSW on purpose. It was a game that could have easily sold 500,000 +.

I dont believe in allegiances, its a business clear and simple. The highest bidder should always get the contract.

What a ridiculous way to look at things. So a company should just go with the highest bidder? Well that's great, get some money right away. Let's not consider the fact that this could fuck you in the long term and you could actually make a lot more if you put it on the console with the largest usebase.

Now i know you are an EA lover, but even that shouldnt cloud your judegment on the issue at hand. EA fucked over the OI team by not advertising the game. Next you will tell me that the game actually sucked and that EA did the right thing.

It's not business to stay where your games actually sell what you want them too? You're getting a taste of what happens to smaller companies when they do ignore fanbases in favor of money. Moneys not going ot buy you a fanbase, and if you don't get any fanbase after that moneys in your hand you get dumped by the group that gave you money to begin with.

BTW I'm curious to know what you mean by not advertising the game.

MOST games don't get lots of TV commercial time these days.... many of the higher profile games do however get lots of ad coverage in the VG mags...

I vaguely think that I might have seen a Stranger commercial on Spike... but I don't know that for sure.

I know for DAMN sure there were ads all over the VG mags....

So how is that not advertising?
 
You have an established fanbase within an established brand. You dont support said established fanbase's brand of choice. Your pull with said fanbase takes a major hit at your own consequence.

OK, I fail to see how that conclusion could be construed as "fanboyish" in anyway possible. Well I can, but I dont want to get into labels. :)

You're going on the most basic of ideas, that accepting a money hat is good as you get a set amount of cash straight away, no matter what userbase you're selling to. Can't you even think beyond that slightly? You can make MORE money from selling to a larger userbase (whether that's multiplatform or the largest single console market).

Just saying that you should go with whoever bids highest without even looking at the market you're moving to...god I'm getting a headache.

Most games arent high profile games either. There are EA adds all over the tellie here in Oz but i never saw one Oddworld one. I have seen 1 print add in an xbox magazine and thats it.

You vaguely remember a TV add ? not to sound preppie but that really settles things.

Basically if a company is going to look after you better than another and you are in the market or tempted to be buyed out, there is nothing wrong with it.

There is no question they made a mistake, but at the time the xbox was being birthed MS honestly thought they could compete with sony.

Believe what the fuck you want about EA and how I feel about the company... I'm started to get a bit annoyed about that dumb shit and the fact that some of you tards continue to bring that shit up as some type of crutch, but that's not the focus of this damn thread.

Regardless of what you want to believe Stranger was not a high profile game in the big scheme of things. It was a niche title that appealed to folks in a niche series. That speaks nothing on whether the game was high quality or not(it was very high quality)... however, it was still a niche title.

And my comment about the TV ad speaks to the fact that I'm not the best person to market to. I don't watch much live TV and generally Tivo through any and all commercials.

None of that changes the fact that Stranger ads were in all of the US mags.

What this also points to is that neither EA, nor MS, nor Sony, nor Nintendo can always tell when a title is going to be "THE ONE" and give it the full blown marketing push the titles eventual supporters think it should have gotten.

But at what cost? Who cares if they're going to look after you if the market isn't there? SquareEnix sure as hell aren't gonna move FFXII to the Xbox now just because MS offer them a shitload of money and looked after them. And they actually have a chance of their fanbase following them, unlike the vast majority of the rest of the industry, Oddworld included.

EA went into an agreement to publish the game. After Lanning basically pissed on the PS2 version, which historically has the larger fan base, they cut their losses right away. That's business, as quoted from above. Is it right? I don't know, if EA was under the impression that a PS2 version would be made, but then Lanning decided not to make one and be defiant to EA, who is HELPING YOUR GAME HIT THE STORES, what do you expect?

Of course, that may very well be not the case, but that would explain the biterness. Sorry, but this is another case of karma biting you square in the ass once more...
 
Was the actual Stranger team even doing the port of the game? I've heard the port was actually looking really nice - maybe they just got jealous of the porting team because they historically can't seem to do shit with the PS2. :D

The other aspect of this that NO ONE is talking about is how Oddworld duped EA. EDIT: OK, Wasabi beat me to my point :D

Hand-in-hand with EA's announcement that Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath was being published by them, was that is would also be coming simultaneously for the PS2.

Timeline:

June 17th: EA announces publishing deal for Stranger as well as PS2 version
Sept 29th: EA & Oddworld announce cancellation of PS2 version. Reason: PS2 version was much farther behind and would need at least 5 months more than the Xbox version.

So, clearly EA signed Oddworld with the belief that they'd be getting a PS2/Xbox multiplatform release and just over 3 months later, that came crashing down. That looks suspiciously to me that Oddworld made absolutely no effort to honor their agreement or alternatively were so incompetent that they couldn't do it.

If I were EA, I probably would have just dumped their ass right there.

He's obviously trying to, and his struggle is not that of someone fluent foremost in a foreign language. Beyond that I've been looking on and off for some indication of what it takes to shake the Junior before Member and haven't found it yet.

I have no idea why no one has called you out on this but I would expect "one of the best games this generation" to be better than "better than good" and to actually be a system seller in itself. How many "best games this generation" do you think there are? A hundred?

Well, I think you can divorce game quality from "system seller" status.

ICO, Lumines, Katamari are all beloved by many on this forum, but are in no way, "system sellers".

Although, I agree. OSW is a competent game with some interesting aspects, but it's probably not in the top 200 games this generation (IMO)
