LTP: Devil May Cry

LTP = late to (the) party (too many people get confused with LTTP and Link to the Past)

Anywho, I've played DMC before but just little parts here and there and ditto for part 3. I've owned this game since I had my original PS2 (i'm on a pstwo now) and well, for some reason I never really gave it a true. For whatever reason, I decided to give it a try today.

My first impression was wow, this game looks so much better on my regular TV than it does on my 53in HDTV. I'm not exactly sure why but it looked muddy and blurry on my hdtv. On my regular TV the game looks sharp and not too out of date. Too bad the menus are low resolution.

Anyway, I finally beat a few chapters and Holy shit this gave is incredibly difficult. I've played through Ninja Gaiden, VJ, Ikaruga but damn I'm having problems with the very first boss! That spider thingy. I remember fighting this boss at some point later in the game i guess when i originally played it at a friend's house but I thought it was just tough cause it was later in the game.

I'm really digging this game. I liked the combos and the dual use of swords and guns. It has a good old meets new feel to it. I've got a few questions though:

1) Obviously, since i'm digging part 1 I will be purchasing part 3 as well ( I liked part 3 that's why I wanted to give 1 a try). However, what makes part 2 so horrible? I can't imagining playing through part 1 and 3 only of a series. It took me 4 tries but I finally went through MGS2 because part 1 and 3 rocked but I finally did it. DMC reminds me of that.

2) I noticed that I need those yellow orbs to continue.. Should I worry about running out of continues? I keep reseting my game and reloading after every death it but it gets annoying.

3) Seeing as how this is a Capcom game.. I'm fearing the innevitable design flaw that almost every Capcom game has.. fighting each boss one after the other in the main mission. Does this game have that?

4) How does 2 player work in DMC3? Does part DMC2 also have 2 player support?

1. I found DMC2 to be VERY easy, as in I've never died even once when playing it. Lame boss fights, badly designed stages, and a boring story also could be added to the list. The open areas allowed you to just jam away on your guns. And Lucia...don't even get me started on her. Bad accent, lame missions.

2. Nah, don't worry about it.

3. Yes, but not on par with what Viewtiful Joe did. You will have to fight previously beaten bosses again, but they're never as hard as the first time. Like in DMC2 you have to fight
this huge ball of shit...which is basically all the past bosses mashed together into a ugly weak ball of crap.

4. The two player system is one of the styles of fighting you choose from in the game. The second player just plugs in the controller after you get that style. DMC2 doesn't have a 2 player mode, but there are two playable characters, Lucia and Dante. Each with their own missions...which are all pretty much the same. Lucia is just more of a short range fighter.

Devil May Cry 3 > Devil May Cry > Devil May Cry 2

everyone will agree to that, no? That being said, I would still tell you to pick up DMC2 along the way. It's not as good as the first or third, but it is an ok action game...not amazing, just ok.

1) What makes part two horrible is the semi-retarded way that combo's are executed and the really low difficulty level. Basically, all you need to do in that game to beat most of the bosses is to spam the gun. Keep firing and they'll usually wind up dead.

2) I didn't really worry about Yellow orbs the first time I played DMC. I used all my money to buy up everything else. Remember to press start and save right before dying though as that lets you save all the red orbs you've earned thus far.

3) You'll only have to do this if you're slow. It's a nice little boss fight though so I don't want to spoil it. However, if you're interested:

Basically, there's a blob like thing that you have to fight. If it swallows you whole, you'll have to face off with one of the previous bosses to escape its hold. However, with the upgraded Sparda in your possession as well as knowing the patterns of those bosses, it should be pretty easy.

4) DMC2 does not have two players. In DMC3, you're given a style called Doppleganger. This lets you create a copy of yourself. Plug in the second controller and the copy can be controlled by someone else. However, the camera is focussed on player one so there are a few camera issues associated with this if you wind up off screen. Also, the mode really isn't fun if you don't get the Super Dante costume that gives you unlimited Devil Trigger. Otherwise, your Devil Trigger will run out after 30 seconds to a minute and you'll wind up playing by yourself again until it recharges.

Thanks guys. What makes DMC3 better than 1?

Gameplay.
But IMO DMC1 is still the best of the series as far as artistic value and atmosphere is concerned.
The gothic castle setting of the original DMC is simply unrivalled.

Capcom Studio 4 has amazing artists (if DMC1, REmake, and RE4) are any indication.

So it's really great DMC4 is being made by Studio 4 with the DMC3 director :)

1) DMC2 is weaksauce. It's easy. Everything has been dumbed down. Basically, those who don't like DMC1 and DMC3, end up enjoying DMC2. Aka they are retarded.

Easy way to beat Phantom in DMC1 (you will be fighting him again btw)

Stinger towards his face (R1+Foward+O)

Immediatly slash twice and buffer into a Hightime Long:

O,O, R1+Back+Press and Hold O

Doing this will make you end up in the air, shoot you shotgun and then initiate a 'double jump' (AIR HIKE)

immediatly press L1 and then R1 to devil trigger to AIR RAID. and start pressing Square to shoot some lighting bolts, press L1 again to deactivate devil trigger and then press O while falling down to give a 'helm breaker' on the way down.

MISC INFO:

---ALASTOR---
Stinger : R1+Foward+O
Hightime: R1+Back+O
Hightime LONG: R1+Back+Press and Hold O
Stock Combo 1: O,O,O
Stock Combo 2: O (short pause), O, O, O
Stock Combo 3: O, (long pause), O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O (aka Shashimi Attack)
Helm Breaker: O (in air)

That's all you need to know for Alastor. And what the beautiful thing is, that's not a lot of shit to remember. But the reason why DMC1's combat is so free-form is because ANYTHING can be chained in and out to anything else.

For example (you can insert the specail move 'hightime' in any of your stock combo's without delay, istantly)

O, (hightime), O

or O, O, (hightime)

or

O, (slight pause), O, O, (hightime)

etc. etc. etc., it's like Street Fighter, take a few set of specail moves but literally create an infinite move list by creating your own chains.

When you get the weapon Ifrit, it also has a slew of special attacks, but what's great is that a lot of them are perform the same way as Alastor's, so the combo system in DMC is not a memorize this and that fest, it's all natural.

For those that can handle DMC3's high level of challenge, yes--it's better than DMC1 aside from some artwork and atmospherical aspects (by no means is DMC3 an 'un-artistic' game mind you)

DMC3 is better than DMC1 is because take DMC1's combo system and multiply it by 100. That's DMC3.

Hope that helps!

PS: And BUY VORTEX--it's the best special move in the game--imo of course.

2 Player Co-op in DMC3 works via Doppleganger fighting style + Super Dante.

The 2nd player controls the doppleganger Dante, the 1st player controls the original Dante.

You need Super Dante because when Doppleganger is activated, it consumes your DT guage. So if you want 'true true' Co-op, you have to have Super Dante to have infinite DT. Getting Super Dante means you have to beat Dante Must Die mode...good luck. Although, there is an accesible code (you don't need a gameshark etc. or whatever) that unlocks everything in the game right off the bat. Check out gamefaqs for details on that.

Remember, DMC3 is much better than DMC1, however, it's much much much much harder, which unfortunately aliented a few people (and reviewers as well)

DMC1 on hard mode = DMC3 on normal mode

But, there are many people here willing to help you out, and the website I linked above has video FAQ's on how to beat all the bosses in DMC3. So worry not.

I couldn't beat the end boss in the first one. :O

>.>

buy two untouchables and that's an automatic win. (sorry, I have an urge to help, can't resist)

You can find one of em' at the location where you fight Nightmare 3 (the last fight with it) And just buy the other one.

Lots and lots of combat variety.. the four main styles plus the other two, five melee weapons with tons of movements, more fire guns.. also the posibility of having a pair of weapons of each type and exchanging them in real time gives and impressive range of combos..
