For anyone interested in a solid third person poltergeist game this might be the one for you.

Nothing is as beautiful as this world of terror, world of shadow people, Bright Falls, Washington, with its on going "Deer Fest", the nature, every street has something like coffee world, or the sheriffs office and there's all kinds of things like the Cauldron Lake, and the camping grounds or the super natural hidden dimension "Dark Place" it's all powered by the north light engine.

I remember how advanced the FBI aspects of Alan Wake 2 felt, and so what happened with Alan Wake 2 is you're split into two characters, you play as special agent Saga, and you're dealing with using evidence to pin point your next objective.

Half of the game you play as "Saga" but you can switch "realities" by entering a puddle through a janitors closet. Wow.

So going into Alan Wake 2's story I knew I was getting into a super natural nightmare scenario but I grew up watching horror, playing horror and reading it you know what I'm saying, but you get into these part of the games early on about trying to solve a murder mystery, what happens is Robert Nightinagle was murdered by a "Cult of the Tree" group who's plan is to basically kill Alan Wake, but these shadow people "Takens" come after you, so now you are fighting cult members, and shadow taken people.

The combat is really straight forward, its you know shoot and kill, there's weapon upgrades, and inventory, I thought it was a solid quick set up. I imagine they could improve some aspects of it but a lot of the time you're using your flash light of all things. You can also backhand enemies.

Items you discover to prepare for future enemies, weapons you find are the shotgun, sewed off shotgun and a rifle.

This game has 19 episodes, 10 for saga and 9 legit missions for Alan. It's easy to switch between them through the janitors room.

You get these "rituals" of murder scenes that has you multiple times going to your "Mind Place" on a plot board to change scenes like for example in the subway it involves a collapsed tunnel but going to your "Mind Place" and changing the site to a regular tunnel you see these new environments playing a world that you know isn't true, but you're seeing it through the eyes of a cult member, or police officer, it's a real pleasure to play but to keep moving forward you can actually get lost and you got to go through different sites, it can be a lot for the casual gamer.

One of the areas, Watery, WA has you going to coffee world, the lighthouse trailer park and has you controlling Saga doing so.

They did a lot of in human scenes, a combination of movie and game this was some crazy stuff.

A 90 on Metacritic

One of the best casts in a video games,

Building relationships with your coworkers was really fun, imagine profiling someone mid game so you build something towards an objective, this person is telling the truth.

It doesn't matter if the game is perfect, but the mind place, things like going into the overlap are game changers, that adds a chaotic nature it probably the craziest stuff ever, the dark vs light and if you aren't willing to hang out in a section of a game for more than 10 mins this game isn't for you and just how this game is constructed is a game changer. I swear Scratch was the best villain, what's truth, what's reality. Without having this aspect I think you'd just have Resident Evil 2, Alan Wake 2 to Alan Wake 1 but when you mention Alan Wake 2 you know it keeps going forward and isn't considered DLC like you know some say games sequels today are just DLC to the original. I was sitting in my room playing this and was struct by it's profound sense of horror because I know you're navigating this complex, world and trying to solve murder. So rich in collecting, you're always having a moment with a puzzle or case and everything feels chaotic in a good game. Pausing from Alan Wake 2 just leaves you wanting to play it more.

What did GAF think of Alan Wake 2?

I remember it looking amazing, with a solid story, and that it had great direction. I liked it a lot.

But I disliked the combat since shooting those shadow people felt like hitting a cloud, no weight or satisfaction to it.

I disliked how slow the characters run, even in combat they half-ass it.

I disliked the dancing scene. It felt performative, like trying to force a viral video.

I have it on my wishlist but I've yet to buy/play it. It's pretty cheap on sale right now, but I'm still not very excited for it. I lost a lot of interest when I read the gemeplay is nothing special and the game is very story heavy.
I like the gameplay in most Remedy games but I'm not really into their storytelling, it always feels like all style over substance. Just a bunch random stuff that's weird just for the sake of it and never comes together into anything coherent or memorable. The fact they always want you to stop playing every 5 minutes and read 24.000 documents to at least make some sense of it all doesn't help.

At least Control and Quantum Break had pretty fun combat to carry the experience. If that's not the case here I'm not sure I'll like it.

I enjoyed it but it could've and should've been better. Incredible graphics. Incredible atmosphere. Great voice acting. The music video section was great and weird.

Combat stinks. Saga stinks. The whole vision board mechanic is boring.

Still love Remedy.

Game still has some technical jank on all platforms and Remedy was the biggest Nvidia shill for this game. Visually crippled on consoles and crippled on AMD and Intel GPUs. They literally announced on GDC they skipped implementation optimizations that would boost performance on AMD GPUs (so desktop and consoles) because it would somehow slow Nvidia GPUs. Raster is compromised in reflections and shadows, RT is fine, PT is again compromised due to terrible native denoiser than isn't ray reconstruction. Also no FSR updates, no XeSS, no FSR Frame Generation or Anti-Lag 2.

As for the game itself, might as well be 10/10. Great visuals, great art style, great level design, great story, great audio design, solid amount of content, great dual upgrade system, great gameplay loops, great atmosphere. And a great sequel to multiple games at ones.

Can't wait for Remedy's next story based game.

This is a complicated one...
While I love AW1 and play it every few month since release, I imagined something different with part 2.

The beginning with Saga is great and made lots fun (FBI agent murder mystery in rainy forest with supernatural elements) but I started to wonder when I get to play as Alan Wake in ALAN WAKE 2?!

There is just too little Alan in Alan Wake 2 for my taste. The levels that you finally have to play as him are boring and don't have much to do with the story of the first part. There were simply too many new facets built into the story.

Also, I like the crazy abstractness in Remedy games, but with Alan Wake 2 they overdid it a bit.

It's like expecting an episode of the X-Files (Part 1) but getting House of 1000 Corpses (Part 2) instead!

Edit: I still hope they port Quantum Break to PS5 someday. One of Remedys best and obviously part of the Remedyverse which they certainly want to establish on all platforms!

I didn't like the Saga part of the game. There wasn't anything bad about her part, but I waited 13 years for an Alan Wake sequel, and I feel like I only got half of one. Time Breaker DLC episode was awesome.

As a fan of original (even American Nightmare) I keep trying to get further in it but I make it an hour and get stuck again.
I like the investigation room elements, but the actual game - less so.
Combat is a chore and decidedly not as engaging as the first game, visuals are awkwardly disappointing (the outdoor areas never feel like outdoors - and performance in them is particularly problematic), the maps overall feel a lot more claustrophobic despite the relatively open structure in Saga parts at least, and the horror elements just aren't very... compelling this time around.

I may eventually power through the whole game but at this rate it'll take me at least another year. 🤷‍♀️

likely the most narcissistic, self-indulgent game i've ever had the displeasure of playing (& i couldn't even trade it in cuz it was digital only!) the original alan wake was inspired & fun. this was just.. the complete opposite...

Loved Alan Wake 1, and American Nightmare. I was super hyped for Alan Wake 2 and then I started seeing previews where you play as a woman agent. No thanks. Is it too much to ask to want to play as Alan Wake in an Alan Wake game? Wouldn't play it even if it was free now.

Really an incredible game, probably Remedy's best.

I was unsure at first too, but Saga is a great character. Her role in the story was very well thought out. A lot of time has passed between Alan Wake 1 and 2, having an outsider's perspective allows the player to unravel the mystery with the protagonist. And besides, half the game is still Alan. If you love the original you owe it to yourself to at least give it a shot. I 100%'d it along with the DLC and it's an all-timer in my opinion.

I just recently got this and was surprised. I didn't care for the first game because I didn't find the encounters fun. But this game has more of an adventure element to it and more of a detective type of game than action. I think it's great so far and such a beauty of a game playing on the deck. I like the new main character too and wouldn't have minded if the whole game was her.

I thought it was a bit crap compared to AW1 and Control, with barely any original idea or memorable moment on top of being short, full of backtracking and poorly optimized.

Also the shared universe thing with the FBC was done with the subtlety of a brick through a windshield.

What a disappointment after AW1.

I liked it but I did not like playing with that FBI agent. I wanted to play as Alan, not as some random woman. But its a good game and it has amazing moments like the musical

I hated Max Payne for the exact opposite reason, I prefer other shooters if I want that but not from Remedy.

I quite liked it. I actually liked Saga's campaign for what it was. I found Alan's switching the portal mechanic cheap and frustrating at times. I wanted more Alan but not more of this Alan.

There were some genuinely creepy parts too. I still preferred Control though. Performance was also rough on the Series X and had those weird artifacts (can't remember if it was using FRS).

I think its greater than the sum of its parts ultimately.

Insane production values but the game itself just wasn't really great? Hard to pinpoint but it didn't keep me interested for long.

It also borders on pretentious, the game is very pleased with itself. Half the time you're playing the game basically goes "look at this thing we're doing, isn't this crazy? Doesn't this look spoopy? Isn't this weird?" and I'm thinking yeah sure this situation is kinda weird and freaky but I'm not really enjoying myself at all.

I think the game needed a little bit of gameplay variety when destroying monsters. The way it goes is basically like if RE only had zombies all game with no upping of the ante from a threat perspective.

I think they have made better games. I vastly prefer Control and Quantum Break is better. I made a mistake of trying to find all the collectibles and stuff thus totally ruining the pace of the game. I also hated those boss encounters, like the one of the earlier ones in the forest. It also really wants to be weird and is not all that weird or at least not in a natural way. But did I enjoy my time with it? I think so. Saga was a great character, Alan less so.
