This came out when I was in high school, a junior or senior and Fear was still a rare game to play so seeing the sequel surprised me.

The slow-mo ability is back and the game is still short and sweet at around 7-9 hours.

I love the guns and all they do like the laser, the new mech, the story surrounding Alama is questionable but it's like ordering fast food and expecting 5 stars, just not going to happen.

I'm pretty sure the multiplayer is dead but here's some footage, I remember dropping it pretty quickly for other shooters (around that era Halo, Killzone, Battlefield and COD were really taking off) and to me I understand why the franchise isn't around today.

The atmospheric levels mixed with the psychic main antagonist, and chasing a ghost girl make this a must play for me for no other reason.

What did GAF think of Fear 2?

I liked F.E.A.R. 2 quite a bit even if it's not near as good as the original. The original is one of the greatest FPS of all time, and the sequel is a solid 7/10.
I know a lot of people at the time (and I'm sure now) didn't like it because it got "consolized" but it's still a solid game.

Now F.3.A.R. is garbage though. There is one mission the supermarket that's not terrible and the idea of playing as Fettel had potential but I really didn't like it.

My favorite of the FEAR trilogy.

Awesome game.

Hell, this topic is making me wanna play it right now.
It really sucks that F.E.A.R. 2 is the only game in the trilogy that isn't included in FPS boost. I recently played through the OG on my Series X and it was much better then I expected (I had only ever played the PC version prior). I made a profile for my Elite Series 2 that put the lean on the paddles and it was awesome.

I don't think F.E.A.R. Files (Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate) is part of FPS boost either unfortunately. Though Persues Mandate isn't really worth playing through IMO.

FEAR 2 doesn't need FPS boost, it always ran with an unlocked frame rate. Running it as-is on SX (or Series S) makes it run at a locked 60.

I can verify this first hand.

Sucks balls that the original is disc-only BC. Can't even buy it on the online store.
Not trying to do the whole "just buy a PC" thing, but if you do happen to own even a modest PC, you can snag the originals on GOG for a pittance.
"Modest." Honestly, FEAR could run on anything you can buy today. Silly me.

Didn't know it was on GOG, let alone being supported that well through GOG Preservation with improvements. Good call.

DUDE YOU FORGOT YOUR PATENTED SCREENSHOT OF THE METACRITIC SCORE

WHAT THE FUCKETY FUCK FUCK

This series needs a reboot or continuation, so good
Sadly Monolith is dead. They should've done a NOLF remake to satiate WB while they worked on the WW game.

Anyway, game was solid but didn't live up to the OG. F.E.A.R. to this day still has one of the best enemy AI systems ever built.

F.3.A.R. was pure trash though (and not made by 'lith)

Still liked the game but didn't hit me the way the first one did which I got when I upgraded to a 6800GS.

I should replay FEAR.

Gets a lot of shit compared to the flawless original but a fine shooter in its own right. The corridor scenes in the school level were as creepy as anything in FEAR 1.

Huuuuuuuuge fan of the franchise. Played them front to back many times.

To me the sequel is awesome, and a sequel done right, because of how different it is to the original. The visuals, the style, the mechs, everything is new. Compare that to how Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War look - almost identical. A masterpiece like FEAR 1 can only be followed up by drastic change.

They delivered the insane story idea of making the horror girl super horny to have your baby. It's genius, because it's not sex sells, but you're the thing most desired by the horrifying monster. She wants you. The job is to kill her, but she wants your baby. What sounds like the plot of an underground cult manga is actually a really clever horror-device and they could have done a lot with that in FEAR 3 if they hadn't transitioned to working on DC and Middle-Earth.

The school in FEAR 2 is top-shelf horror and makes you piss your pants. The music box lullaby is memorable and adds a lot of mystery.

Trepang2 captures the gameplay perfectly, but it really shows that combat is not everything and without the horror girl it lacks that certain oomph.
