LTTP: Aliens: Dark Descent - I love the Corps!

I was not thinking of making this one so soon, but I see the game is free on PS+ till Tuesday, so…

TLDR: This is to Aliens what Alien: Isolation was to Alien. A superb squad-based tactical game that allows you to relieve all your Colonial Marines fantasies.

Alien: Dark Descent is a top-down real time tactical game where you control a squad of 4 marines. You cannot control each member individually, they will also fire automatically on any hostile in range.

The game has a mission-based structure either some light base building and facility management. Note that you can evacuate from a mission and come back to it later - all unlocks, objectives, etc. will remain the same as when you left. The only thing pushing you forward is a level of planetary infestation and later something else (to avoid spoiling things).

There are multiple “points” available during the mission. Command Points are the only ones that regenerate (you can later modify the maximum amount and the recharge rate), you use them for skills such as throwing a granade, using a shotgun, etc.
Tech point determine the actions you can take such as welding the doors (which will allow you to shelter and reduce stress level of your marines) ; Medkit allow you to use them to heal your marines; Reload points are used each time a marine runs out and needs to reload (you can also do it manually) - great for realism, you can imagine your team is carrying a finite amount of ammo.

Between the missions the marines gain experience and can be levelled up in order to give them more abilities and also perks. There are also different classes available e.g. Medic, Gunner, etc.

Story - nothing to write home about , but it is interesting story without your regular Prometheus bullshit.

To sum up the game is dropping with atmosphere, it’s obvious the developer had a lot of love for the source material.

I encourage everyone to grab it and give it a try, incredible game that does things a little differently.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife

Always glad to read this, specially when it's related to a beloved franchise such as Alien.

I've had this game on the wishlist for a while, so very nice to read it's good from a fellow gaffer.

Really enjoyed it myself. The opening level/tutorial is a chore, but once you get the squad and go driving around the colony clearing buildings it becomes a lot of fun. Has an interesting hive alert mechanic so you'll practice stealth too and the story was surprisingly decent.

Good to hear. I struggled with the intro and checked out, if it drastically improves I'll have to give it another go.

If I have one single complaint is that the game doesn't do a very good job of explaining you things, and there are many systems at play and things to keep in mind. I'm playing on the lowest difficulty setting, but it is still sometimes a challenge and people are mentioning the game overall is quite challenging. So you would think a good explanation is crucial, but that's not the case i.e. there are so many upgrades and perks to choose from (one Perk per level), but you are completely lost in what you should actually be specialising as. I picked a Recon class with a sniper rifle and silencer shot, but so far it looks to me that he is useless (might be the difficulty as well), since I advance way better going on the offensive than stealthy.
Things are explained way better...in the Codex, but that's kinda a FFXIII cop-out which should never happen.
