LTTP: Perfect Dark (2010, X360) via Game Pass

Played both back in the day, with Goldeneye being 'that game' for the n64

That one, maybe even more than Mario said the wait for next gen was over. It was leap forward for the genre and done by rare, at the height of their powers. That and that a movie game, also finally pretty much followed the story, of the movies. just sealed the deal for me (I even got the earlier release us version, plus the converter to mate with a uk game allow the n64 to play it.)

Perfect dark was awesome as well. But you could see that even with the expansion pack the n64 was being pushed too hard. Although multiplayer with bots and those alien guns that could see through walls. Was just mind blowing for that time

And you can't forget about the split screen games on both of them. Especially with 4 players, on a 21" tv, or smaller 😂

Both were classics. They truly did make a contribution to gaming history 😎

But history also hasn't been kind to their graphics and performance. More so perfect dark.

I'm glad we got them. And that they were remade and others got to see what like so many other games was cutting edge and a real gaming thrill. Even if some parts have aged much more than others.

You don't have to pay that much, even with the vpn trick gone. Buy EA or Core + 1 month GPU and convert = ~7 Euro/month GPU
Oh I know, but best to just quote these RRP's when dealing with fanboys. Even RRP gives value.

I mean I have PS+ Premium and the 2 just don't even compare. It's awful.

Games don't "age" IMO.
This is a very surprising take.

When you go from an NES controller with 2 buttons and a D-Pad to a current-gen controller with up to 18 buttons and two sticks, all of a sudden your NES game with all the compromises made to make it work with 2 buttons become dated.

When your camera in Super Mario 64 is linked to 4 buttons, it does feel dated to have only 4 ways to change the view and not a full 360 camera you can move freely.

When your 30 years old RPG doesn't have a map nor a quest list/log, remembering where to go and what to do, especially when you close the game and reopen it after a while makes it feel dated.

And basically, having no way to save your game and having to start it over every time from the beginning makes it a little bit too old.

In my opinion of course

"The best" FPS, where you spend 20 minutes diligently completing three objectives only to fail on the fourth one, because the objective is unclear and you have only 30 seconds to figure it out!
Pretty much lol

But what can I say? The insane amount of effort and content poured into this game still blows my mind, especially considering it was in development for, what, under three years? The arsenal is phenomenal and one of the few games where I can say I grew particularly attached to the guns (RE4 is another). And personally, I think the spray-and-strafe shooting-from-the-hip gunplay has its own particular appeal that you don't really get in modern aim-down-the-sights shooters, save for the occasional Doom '16 or something. But I know I'm in the minority for how highly I think of PD.

There's some truth here but most of that stuff doesn't bother me except for no saving. In fact, things like simplified controls I think are often better for a lot of games than overcomplicating things. There's a happy medium of course but I can sit down and play through Turtles in Time and Super Punch-Out and enjoy every second of it partly because of how immediately accessible they are. I guess it depends on what we feel is aging or not; no saving in Mario 3 was kind of a problem back in the day as well but the game's merits still shine brightly.

This is how the shit starts. I instinctively selected the first line and... spent half an hour, wandering around the empty institute and trying to figure out what the fucking game wanted me to do! I forgot about the PC's location and the options visible in the screenshot.

The idiots from Rare couldn't even explain how to start playing!
I liked it and doing the target practice and what not.

Is this game overrated? probably. But it to me is still a competent FPS

Too bad this remaster fucked up the stick sensitivity (it's somehow harder to aim than on the original). Apart from this issue it's the perfect way to play Perfect Dark.

PS: Rare replay is cheap for what it offers. You really don't need to rent it with gamepass.

There's still cool ideas that I'm surprised hasn't been ripped off by other games. Like melee blurring the opponent's screen.

I didn't have a problem with the menus but I had a feeling some people did, rare tied in the institute during the last mission when it was raided by the aliens, and it has the shooting range. Yeah looking back it is a bit odd but today's menus are nothing to be celebrated especially COD's "hubs".
