LTTP: THE Dark Earth -

So, I randomly, without any outside intervention remembered this game, Dark Earth:

It's a 1997 action adventure game. Not point and click - you control Arkhan with keyboard arrow keys like classic tank controls.
You talk, collect items, fight and solve environmental puzzles.
It takes place in far future after the apocalypse. the setup reminds me of Horizon Zero Dawn but sadly it doesn't go in similar direction.
You do uncover "ancient" technology but in the end you don't discover any reactor or car or anything... but usual forces of light and dark in the form of aliens underground. makes little to 0 sense

I only played the demo back in the day but I remembered the atmosphere.
And yeah! After fiddling with dosbox win95 etc, I got it running and it's SO GOOD.
The atmosphere is thick. The music, sound design of voices and noises echoing the castle are really well done.
The characters are crude looking but backgrounds are beautiful!
track 07 as you enter the main square - BEAUTIFUL!

Game is of course very crude and some voice acting is really bad but for the most part, the story and conversations are engaging.
You talk to some people, progress the story and fight someone. There is very little combat.

Now... the game reminds you why 90s was "THE BACK THEN":
-You click C to enter COMBAT mode. Then hold ctrl and use arrow keys to perform attacks.
-You click tab to enter DARK mode. In this mode you are more aggressive. You scream at people or can interact items differently. Arkhan is more bold. It's like rdr2.
-You need to go to your inventory, select an item, place it in your hand, go out of inventory AND THEN USE IT.
-None of that is said anywhere in the game. I had to go to manual to learn controls and what does what.
-Even settings are impossible without manual lol.
-Only manual saves at save points
-you can miss an items and get stuck. You can run out of healing items and ammo... and you are done.
-The game is also on a timer because you are changing into a monster

That said, I enjoyed my time with the game a lot. It's a very thick vibe and atmosphere. The story goes in a stupid direction and sadly it's kinda crap later on.
Took me 28 years but I finished it lol :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Funny thing is that Horizon actually stole from this game. There is a sun good, sun seers etc. It's totally like that sun city from horizon1.

it was ... pretty bad from what I remember. I bought it after completing Final Fantasy 7 (releases earlier that same year) and you can only imagine how much FF7 raised the bar beyond what Dark earth could have ever dreamed of living up to

oh for sure.
it's a 5-6h long game with usual "wtf do I do now" stuff, bad combat and just being clunky.
But it's kinda saved by the great world, vibe and production values for the time

I enjoyed the world and tone very much when I played it 10-15 years ago. It was a very clunky game in all the best and worst ways possible. Never did finish it though. 😁 Sad they never got the opportunity to refine the experience in a sequel, it was a very intriguing setting.

I remember reading a review in Score game mag where it got 10/10, the screenshots looked amazing, but I never knew anyone who had it, original version or pirated one, so it passed me by.

Here is that review, page 32

Re-reading it, I get a shot of nostalgia. It is so well written it makes me wanna play it.

sequel where you go outside the city would be so amazing.
I just wish they went more post apocalyptic, uncovering more "ancient tech" rather than just aliens but it's somewhat interesting too
Honestly... it kinda made me want to replay first horizon zero dawn....

Yeah it was quite limited in scope, but seeing as it was quite early in the 3D days it's understandable. Being able to visit more places and uncovering more crazy lore would be peak.

Yeah, the backstory/lore of H:ZD was easily the best part of that game. I had some gripes with it but ended up having a great time mainlining the story.
