Just finished "The Desert"... Aang can get very fucking scary when pissed off. Do NOT piss off Aang.

Katara was amazing during the episode. She was devastated inside but she remained calm and determined to get the whole group out of the mess. And the ending... oh god the ending, so sad.

On the other hand, Sokka... bless him, MUSHY GIANT FRIEND!

And we're going to Ba Sing Se!!! :D

It's the quenchiest.

Real talk, Aang is one of my favorite characters ever created. Actually, I'd say most of the main cast is up there for me. But Aang (and Zuko's) personality and growth during the show was amazing and refreshing for me. The non-violent monk dealing with the genocide of his people and trying to save the world is a brilliant concept.

Random aside, I would totally buy into a kickstarter to get the series on blu-ray

While blu rays would be nice, it would be too expensive. They lost the original source material so there's no way to upres it with out redrawing every frame.

Two episodes. One post. Let's do this.

On "The Serpent Pass":
-Such a happy, hopeful opening that pretty much clashes with everything before and after it. Mood whiplash, but it was a pretty deserved moment of respite for our heroes.
-Aang's inner turmoil and constant denial is pretty hard to watch. These are the moments you realize he's only a 12 years old boy dealing with being: a) the last surviving member of his entire culture, b) a sort of living relic of a bygone era and c) the destined savior of the world. AND he just lost not only his oldest and most trusted friend - Appa also was (together with Momo) the only tangible, living and breathing link to his extinct culture. It was something deeper and more powerful (and altogether painful) than "just" losing a friend. To him, it's pretty much desecrating what's left of the Air Nomads.
-Hey, it's the family that appeared at the start of "Zuko Alone", nice!
-HEY, IT'S SUKI! Long time no see. And she looks nice. I like her relationship with Sokka, they have an honest connection. She sees a side of Sokka probably few others get to see. Regarding Sokka - it's nice to see that the show hasn't constantly hammered the point of whatever happened between Sokka and Yue back in S1. It's understated and sort of organic, so when Sokka rejects Suki by moonlight, you just know why.
-Toph drowning... THAT WAS CRUEL. At least we get a hilarious moment with Suki afterwards, lol.
-Zuko and Jet tag teaming, be still my beating heart!
-Katara has shown why she's a natural leader. While's she's sometimes bossy, overbearing and overprotective, those qualities in precise measures are exactly what the group needed during those difficult times. And she's grown so much as a waterbender, it's great :D
-Aang's speech about letting go of hope was very dark for a "kid's show". Thankfully, he regained it by the end. That hug... :')
-CLIFFHANGER ENDING, ARGH.

On "The Drill":
-What a way to end the previous episode and start this one... it's definitely a smart choice. Keeps the episode focused with every member contributing.
-Something I didn't mention on the previous one: Zuko and Uncle Iroh's travels to Ba Sing Se. I was expecting both plots to come together by the end of "The Drill"... but no. Looks like I'll have to wait for that. It's not a bad thing, though, I'm quite interested in that particular storyline. Zuko's growth has been fascinating. And Uncle Iroh has, sadly, ruined everything with his undying love of tea. Oh, bitter irony...
-Man, the action coreography keeps surprising me. It's really fucking stellar. Aang/Azula over the Drill is obviously a highlight (and I fucking CHEERED when Aang managed to land the decisive shot at the last second), but Ty Lee's (<3) effortless dismantling of Team Terra was magnificent.
-Regarding Sokka, I love that he's the comic relief element of the group, but that doesn't mean he's a bumbling idiot. He has some brilliant ideas to be honest, and has to deal with being the only non-bender member of the group. The episode touched on that a bit, something I enjoyed... and in a very humorous, self-aware manner.
-TEAM AVATAR! BOOMERANG! FEARSOME FOURSOME!
-Azula remains a compelling villain. I still hate her guts, but she's compelling. And more Mai and Ty Lee is ALWAYS a good thing.
-All roads lead to Ba Sing Se, it seems. And I can't wait to see what's inside.
-As a general comment: this has been tonally similar to the 3 episodes that ended last season... but the stakes are higher. And there are MORE episodes. Love it. LOVE IT. It's all building up to a climax that I know won't disappoint.

Ba Sing Se is incredible. They spend just enough time showing that place off, and it's a sight to behold. Steel your heart for what is to come.

Those two hour-long specials, "The Fury of Aang" and "Secret of the Fire Nation" (consisting of The Library/The Desert and The Serpent's Pass/The Drill, respectively) are some of this show's finest episodes. Just fantastic. And it's only just past the halfway point of the season and the show itself.

This thread is making me want to start yet another rewatch of this show... too bad I left all my DVDs at home.

That said, the next episode is the best episode of the series in my fair opinion. Be ready for a huge gushfest from me as you enter the Ba Sing Se arc.

I watched it for the first time a few weeks ago. I actually did it after I marathoned Korra which I started watching after it ended.
Post your reactions!

I love Aang too. He's my favorite character, which is surprising since I tend to like side characters far more than the main protagonist. I think he's such a breath of fresh air (ha) when it comes to male protagonists. Unfortunately, from what I've heard I wouldn't be a fan of how Korra (the show) treats him.

BorkBork's essay(s?) on him do a much better job of explaining why I love him so much, so I'll just second reading those.

The string of episodes starting with The Library up until the Season 2 Finale is seriously some of the best tv ever made. So fucking good. Keep posting impressions!

The next one is one of my least favorite in the season. I assume you mean the one after that.

Oh man sounds like you're about to enter the Dai Le agents <3

I really miss avatar unfortantly legend of Korea failed hard

Hey OP, fellow Latinamerican here. Is your version of Netflix offering Avatar in english? My damn Mexican Netflix is offering Avatar with Spanish dub only (and a subpar one at that), which is strange since 99% of everything on Netflix always has the original language as an option.

I ended up buying the DVDs. Just finished the series a week ago. It is really great!

The next one is one of my least favorite in the season. I assume you mean the one after that.

Both City of Walls and Secrets and Tales of Ba Sing Se are great episodes; however, CoWaS is legitimately my favorite episode of all Avatar, even though some of the other multi-parters top it. Sorry to disappoint. ;)

Might want to clear the schedule to watch a big chunk of season 2. That's what my GF had us do when in introduced her to the show and we got to about the point where you got.

this is a fact. Every single episode in that run is nearly perfect. I can't think of another show with that many amazing episodes back to back other than maybe the final half season of breaking bad.

I seriously finished watching Avatar for the first time a few days ago. What made me decide to get on it was the vast praise I kept hearing about Korra and I was really looking forward to start watching this sequel soon. But, according to many here, Korra is infinitely inferior? What the hell?

Anyone here think Korra may be better or at least just as good as Avatar? Im disapointed to read so much shit piling on the sequel I already bought on Blu-ray!

At least from what Ive seen I can look forward to higher production values and even better animation, right?

It's incredible how the creators went from something as good as TLA, to garbage (Korra).

GARBAGE????????? That bad?

This has got to be one of those instances of NeoGAF hyperbole where there's always one dude who goes in a The Last of Us thread and says "THIS GAME IS THE WORST OF ALL TIME", right?

Yes, though you may notice a slight dip in some of the first half of book 2 because another studio worked a few episodes.

Don't listen to people who say Korra is shit. It's typical "everything is either the best or the worst thing in the world" internet hyperbole shit. Avatar is better, but Korra is still great and even amazing at parts with the exception of much of season 2. Season 2 does have a two part episode that's one of the best in either series though. And I'd say season 3 of Korra is nearly as good as season two of Avatar.

One of my favourite scenes.

I really do need to get onto watch Book 3 and 4 of Korra. Heard a lot of good things about it, but the ending of Book 1 and all of Book 2 left a really bad taste in my mouth.

The hype and expectations for Korra were through the roof. I don't think there was anyway it was going to meet the expectations that The Last Airbender set for it....that said...

There are definitely issues with Korra. Korra her isn't as likeable as Aang (IMO of course). In fact, the main cast in general isn't as likeable. The big problem for me is that in The Last Airbender, I can tell why Team Avatar hang out together. They may get on each others nerves from time to time, but the love and affection they have for each other is genuine and organic. I never got that sense from Korra's version of Team Avatar, and that really bummed me out.

Do it. I dropped the show after season 2 ended and only went back and binged 3 and 4 two months ago. I really regret not watching them sooner. They're really a return to form imo and season three in particular is absolutely incredible.

Korra isn't as bad as its biggest naysayers say nor is it as good as its biggest fans say. It's nowhere near as consistent in quality compared to The Last Airbender, but there are stil plenty of high moments in my opinion, in particular Season 3.

This is what I hoped.

I'll definitely watch Korra and power through that Book 2. Disappointed not to hear as much praise as I thought I would see.

And OP, you obviously know english. You're kidding yourself into thinking Avatar's latinamerican dub is good. You should be watching it in its original language! EVen if it means jumping through more hoops. I was devastated to see Netflix was offering it only with the dub.

100% agreed on this. The show had problems, but I think the biggest haters exaggerate their problems with the show. Korra was a show that had some great ideas and concepts but had trouble with the execution of them.

That said, you'll never convince me that the new team Avatar is anywhere close to the OG team Avatar. And while season 3 was much improved over season 2, I don't think it it's as good as the OG series.

Season 2 does have a two part episode that's one of the best in either series though.

To me those were probably the worst 2 episodes in anything Avatar, not because they are boring or badly done, but because they are so contrived and silly that they actually diminished a lot of the magic and soul of the universe. Sometimes not knowing is actually better, and I personally wish I'd never seen them now that I have. I would say those eps are almost a "midichlorians" moment for me, although I understand why people like them so much.

And I'd say season 3 of Korra is nearly as good as season two of Avatar.

Season 3 starts well, develops unique and interesting characters that are very different from any we've seen before, but the end is super weak and throws away any depth in them just for a flashy fight scene. Then you are left again with mostly characters you don't care about back where everyone started, except for some spirit world nonsense they pulled out of their ass and a sock in someone's mouth. Ugh. Also, fuck Bolin. Worst character ever.

I actually like Korra a lot. The character I mean, but the show in general is clearly very inferior to what came before, and is very conflicted in that it wants to be its own thing, yet sometimes it worries too much with distancing itself and resorts to cheap unearned references to keep it connected. Season 2 was just awful stuff. Season 4 I didn't bother with.

Really? Avatar had problems too. Season 1 has the weakest filler episodes and some generally boring and slow episodes. Also the first half of S3 has some definite bumps that make it inconsistent as well. Season 2, on the other hand, is perfection!

This I just cannot get behind. I personally don't think there's a single episode of ATLA that's bad or boring. I enjoyed every episode that came my way.

And The Storm is the best episode?

No way, that's easily Zuko Alone.

And that season 2 finale? Amazing.

I agree that AtLA wasn't perfect. I could get by those slower episodes because I actually liked the main heros + Zuko/Iroh. I cared about their motivations and where things were going. For example, we as the audience don't get to see much with Princess Yue (sp?) but we're pretty bummed when she dies because of Sokka's connection with her.

After season 3/4 of season 2 or so, I really grew to like the character of Korra. You can throw Tenzin and his siblings in the "like" column as well. I was completely indifferent to Mako and Asami, and had a love/HATE relationship with Bolin. That's my main gripe.

I didn't really care too much for the great divide. Book 1 took a while for me to get going but boy are books 2 and 3 consistently fantastic.

I will say this, when I did watch Korra, the only character I really liked was Asami. I liked Verrick in the second season as well, because he was fun.

I remember thinking that the entire first season basically made Mako an incredibly unlikable character, and then the second season made everyone else unlikable but redeemed Mako. Didn't like it that much.

I see the OP is about to begin the Ba Sing Se arc, in my opinion the best group of episodes if only for the series finale. Even so, the damn Book 2 ending is so good.

It seems that he is using the LA dub, which I also watched when the series was broadcasted here. An excellent work, except for some inconsistencies at the end of the series - even so I can see why people may prefer the original audio. After all, there has to be something lost in translation and the original cast (Mako, Grey DeLisle, for just some examples) is excellent.

I also recommend watching Korra. As many people have said, it suffers from execution problems - most egregiously in Book 2 - but it is neverless good.

We've gone a long way since the first Avatar thread.

It seems like people wouldn't spare a glance towards this series at first, but I am glad we got to enjoy such a good product at the end.

Damn it, now I have an itch for binge watching both series again.

Man, this scene. The music. The look on Katara's face as everybody else - even Sokka and Toph - run in fear. There's so much emotion and pain behind that expression. It's a perfect moment for her character, and a beautiful affirmation of their relationship. And then there's the (spoilers)
heartbreaking parallel of this
later...

Signing up for the Last Airbender love-in. It may be my favourite animated show out there. If there's one thing I really liked about it, was that it seemed to respect its viewers and the internal logic of its universe. Superpower stories are hard to write, because you leave your characters open to so many plotholes or contrivances. The Last Airbender is one of the very few shows where you can yell 'why don't you do this, stupid?' at the screen and the characters will quickly figure it out, and do it. They also managed to make a flash-back recap episode super cool, which I didn't think was possible.

Korra fares a lot worse in comparison, but if you're a fan of the original, you may as well check it out. Animation is good, and some characters are fun, but a little for the most part it's more shallow and "webcomic-y" for the lack of a better term.

I loved The Last Airbender. I had no idea that there had been a sequel.

Now after reading everyone's comments about Korra, I don't know if I should check it out.

Reading through this thread has bought back a lot of memeories so I might just download A:TLA and re-watch it.

Holy shit, I loved this when I was younger (I'm 17 so was young when it started) and always wondered what happened.
It is on UK Netflix so this is HAPPENING. AWESOME.

Korra's pretty good in season 3 but there's a lot more flaws to be found with, partly due to expectation partly due to it being really that bad at some parts namely season 2 (and season 4's not that great either).

It's very different from ATLA I'll say that much.

I agree that AtLA wasn't perfect. I could get by those slower episodes because I actually liked the main heros + Zuko/Iroh. I cared about their motivations and where things were going. Truthfully I got into ATLA because of the seasons 1 finale had been watching it on and off on tv (random episodes0, and wasn't that interested and figure it'd make for a nice time waster, watch the finale the finale to see where it went as it's normally one of the strongest episodes and it was pretty great went back and watched the rest which I enjoyed a lot more when watched consecutively.

It really is the pinnacle of cartoons.
You're watching at a good time too since the sequel just finished, and it's pretty damn great too.

I'm just gonna pile onto all the love already here.

In my opinion the most important thing in any medium is the characters, and ATLA absolutely NAILS the characters. Every single one is well developed, likeable (not matter how psychotic) and just entertaining to watch. It's incredible, but I think this is the only show where I actually love every single character.

Just as an example: Sokka. Trying to fill the void left by his father. He starts out as a macho idiot that slowly becomes a reasonable leader. Just the fact that he's the non-bender of the group but still manages to be absolutely integral is great. Aang would have absolutely failed without Sokka. You can't say the same about Asami, imo.

Really? Avatar had problems too. Season 1 has the weakest filler episodes and some generally boring and slow episodes. Also the first half of S3 has some definite bumps that make it inconsistent as well. Season 2, on the other hand, is perfection!

Aang is a great character. Katara is a great character. Sokka is a great character. Toph is a great character. Zuko is a great character. Iroh is a great character. Azula is a great character. Ozai is not a great character, but he doesn't need to be. The overall story of AtLA is good, it splits up well into three seasons, and almost every episode along the way is good-to-great (most of the low ones were "good", at least).

Korra is a stupid, violent, unlikable Mary Sue.
Mako is Twilight fanfiction.
Bolin as a comedy sidekick is almost a parody of Sokka, and the show takes a crap on him, because it forgot how comedy works.
Asami got the least screentime, which means that her two or three good moments make her probably the greatest character in the show.
Tenzin is a great character, classic AtLA, so of course the show takes a crap on him.
The fights in LoK lost much of their flavor as everything became MMA.

The alleged story of Korra in S1 (benders vs non-benders) might have had some potential if it ever bothered to show up.
Amon was looking to be a great villain, until he turned into a big pile of nothing.
The real villain of S1 was so bad, he violated rules that were established in AtLA, to the point where the show needed to go out of it's way to point out that the showrunners of AtLA never gave a damn about the rules they were making up, so it's alright to disregard pretty much all of them.
Korra S1 might have been at a disadvantage against AtLA, storywise, since it only had a half-season compared to AtLA's three seasons, but the showrunners wasted half of Korra S1 on an MMA version of Quiddich.

Season 2 of Korra might have been even worse than S1, but I thought they were both pretty bad. I think it's telling that the two generally-accepted best episodes of Season 2 were flashbacks that didn't involve Korra's regular cast of characters.

I've heard that seasons 3&4 get better, but I haven't gotten around to watching them.
