LTTP: Batman Arkham Asylum

Wowzors! I ignored this game when it was released and when i mean ignoring i mean almost avoiding everything about this game, videos, discussions in here, reviews because of my dislike against Batman(not in to superhero stuff too much).

And lately i noticed how much Gaf praises this game and noticed all the awards it took. After peeking to its OT i decided to give it a chance.

Wow! I didn't know it was a mix of Zelda, Splinter Cell and Riddick! Such an immersive game with tons of stuff to do and a very well executed combat. Even the combat is not super complicated(almost same as AC games) it feels much better than AC games! Set pieces are very well made and there are tons of hidden stuff to do.

Batman's voice acting is great and thank god they didn't try to capture the super boring realistic setting of the latest movies and sticked to more gothic approach like in old comics.

I only played like 2 hours maybe and been killing time in the courtyard of the prison, looking for hidden stuff.
MY only complain about the game is lack of challenge in combat(maybe it is too early to say that), tho game plays more like a Splinter Cell game where you have to avoid enemies most of the time. oh And Unreal engine...I don't like the ugly DoF of UE.

Anyway back to game now and woho they are making a sequel!

Oh and i tried those cheap 3d glasses came with the game, after i enabled 3d mode from the in game menu i didn't notice much pop up on the screen haha.

Play on Hard for more challenging combat. I started (and still need to finish it) on that and was pleasantly surprised just how much a mistake can cost you in a fight.

Biggest surprise of 2009 and, if it weren't for Uncharted 2, I would've considered it GoTY. While it was impossible not to read or hear good words about the game prior to playing it, it was still better than I was expecting.

Try to force yourself to not use detective vision too much. Maybe only if you're stationary or something. (Not everyone can put those additional restriction on himself.)

Because the game looks good without it. And most people (myself included) used it almost all the time. :-P

Also: Play on Hard. I think you take less damage and you don't get the counter icon. You will have to read the opponents movement.

Yeah maybe i should swtitch to hard if combat would be same for the rest of the game.
That mini boss battle with the big ogre guy at prison was like kinda joke. I punched him few times and it was over!

I'm so glad that The Dark Knight was up in the skies that this got a chance to be made, and glad that people bought it cause this is one of THE GREATEST fan-service in video games of all time!

Nothing was forced, nothing was overdone, everything was a taste of honey and it tasted fucking sweet!

The moment they announced the team behind the game and the voice actors and the artists and story writers, I was so in! I'm glad it didn't disappoint and I'm proud to say that this was my game of the year, bar none!

Translation a pre-created franchise into a videogame is not that easy especially when it's based on a comic book character. Glad that Rocksteady gets it as very few developers do these days and easily fall for the pressure from Publishers.

CANNOT wait for Arkham City!

Oh and yes, start on Hard. You will love it for it is meant to be played on Hard!

And it has very clever design decisions like quick escape. When i got out for the first time first thing i tried was go to cliff and let's see if i can fall to sea lol. Usually all new games have invisible barriers now. I fell to sea but game put me back on the cliff again with animation of Batman climbing. That was very nice instead of a loading screen it was more immersive.

The combat was fresh, the story was amazing, the voice acting top notch. Everything else was polished to a brilliant shine.

Surprisingly great game aside from the terrible final boss.

Really enjoyed it. It's one of those games that feels so well put together, so cohesive. I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff, Dead Space, Uncharted, God of War, display this really well too. You never feel like you can peek behind the developers curtain, everything is so professionally executed and thoughtfully intergrated into the gameplay, that's it's a joy to just mess around with the basic mechanics.

I bought this on sale through Steam a few days ago.

So far I'm very impressed. The combat is a little too simple (or maybe Batman's just that badass...) and there's a little too much hand-holding for my tastes, and I would prefer Batman's eyes (while in the suit) be completely white as in The Animated Series, but those are the only complaints I have about the game. The voice acting probably couldn't get any better, thanks to the cast from TAS (Hamill is The Joker). The writing is solid (though I seriously doubt The Bat would have walked into what was an obvious trap), particularly the excellent dialogue. There's tons of stuff to do and unlock. And you really do feel like Batman while you're playing.

I have always defended Batman: Vengeance as a basically solid game and, until now, the best Batman experience available via gaming, but AA (obviously) blows it out of the water. I'm not even 10% done with the game and I'm excited for Arkham City. Buy it if you haven't already played it.

Wonderful game. Then again, the game itself could have been average and I still would have loved it just for the voice acting. Having the voice actors from the animated series really lifted the atmosphere and made it feel authentic. Everything else was just icing on the cake!

I got this on steam holiday sale for 7,99, and let me tell you, that is a steal for this game. Combat is great (played on normal though) and feels really good. Story is meh, but hey, it's a superhero game.

Bossfights were my biggest disappointment. The fight with the
Killer Croc
took way longer than it should have, they could probably have halved the time that one took. Also there were way too many of the... the name slips my mind at the moment, those big guys who rush at you. They're repeated countless of times throughout the game, and they are the same every time. That and that there are a total of... five different enemies in the game? They could have done much more on that department.

These things didn't bother me that much when playing the game though, I had a blast. It's just when I look back at it, there are some things I feel could have been done better.

Why does nobody mention the mindboggling good graphics?
On my 6850, FullHD with 2xSGSSAA results in stable 40fps.
On my 40" TV, this basically looks like a target render... only I'm playing it.

Soooo gooooooooooooood.

Because most time is spent in detective mode. :(

Bought this during steam sale and I cannot believe the fun I have with this game. Well crafted, polished and superb gameplay made me a fan of batman. I never knew so much about the universe as I did now. Still not finished the game;

Also, am I the only one that sometimes yells after an awesome combo "I'm the goddamned Batman"?

I think I voted the same as you. Today I think that Batman is the better game.

Last time I played my pc copy was back on my oldish 1400x900 screen but I was kicking 8xMSAA at 60fps and it was eye melting nice, the game just has some great visual style about it all and is perfect for batman.

I have a 1960x1080 screen now so I really do need to go play it again and finish my hard run.

I got it for 360 sealed and new for £5 at Morrisons. I think they are still selling it at that price.

I just finished this a week ago and I really agree it's fantastic. One of the classics of the generation. The kind of game you want to boot up just to walk around the environment. The exploration, combat, cool boss fights are all great. The way the island evolves is also amazing. Fantastic voice acting as well. Can't say enough good things about it.

Played a little bit of it. Really like Batman and though voice acting was too much to ignore. Unfortunately, I find the game disgusting to look at. The art does not give well. The beginning was really boring and the combat just felt like timed button presses. I assume it gets better later on, but I have no desire to find out. I will keep on eye on the sequel though as the GI article about it sounded pretty nice.

Was gonna post this, but someone already covered it.

I see where you're coming from somewhat, but the challenge rooms didn't feel this way at all IMO. Enemies attacking from every direction, needing to be able to spot each opportunity to counterattack, plus the huge enemies (titans I think?) were very challenging and didn't feel repetitive at all. Those rooms were some of the best fun I had with the game.

As opposed to other combat based games?
Playing Devil May Cry or the like dosen't feel like I'm just waiting to press y or something. AA basically felt just like Assassins Creed. Wait till they attack me and do something. It was boring there, it's boring here.

So no, not like other better combat games.

I started this yesterday for the first time too! Playing the GOTY edition on PS3.

Voice acting ranges from amazing to downright laughable (even within just the Batman voice), graphics are great and the combat is satisfying. Some of the character models like Batman and the Joker are just awesome...

Great game, systematically figuring out how to empty a room of thugs was the best part. Though I'm happy that they're toning down detective vision for AA2, it was really powerful but I didn't like the blue filter it used even though I had it on all the time.

I finished the game last week and I also have to say it was pretty fun. Hell, I love fucking with most of the henchmen a little bit too much. Fun game, but too bad the bosses were absolutely terrible.

Man to me Arkham Asylum is one of the most well made games I've ever played in my life. I don't think I've had any issues with it besides boss fights, but really I enjoyed the game so much I just didn't care. I can't wait for the sequel!

Absolutely badass game.

The action-stealth Metroid combination is amazing. The combat and stealth attacks made you feel so badass as you should being The Batman. Clearing an entire room with as much combo chains and counters as possible was tough yet satisfying (hardmode).

Easily the best superhero game ever. It's a game that will stick with me and I recommend it to all gamers. They nailed the entire atmosphere of Gotham and Batman. I cannot wait for the second one.

I too just recently pulled it out of my backlog after over a year of it sitting in my Steam games (came with a square enix/eidos pack). I knew it would be good but I was definitely surprised by how much I liked it. I loved the beginning, felt very much like Half-life walking into the Asylum as killer croc comes down the elevator... Great atmosphere, great voice acting, amazing graphics.

I was lucky to get this bundled with my Slim. I probably wouldn't have picked it up otherwise.

Really fun game, but as other posters have said, the player has no reason not to run around in detective mode the whole time and unless you force yourself not to, it can ruin the pretty pictures.

Play it on hard.

Play on Hard and get back to me. It's elegant and well-designed, but not simple.
Still easy as hell on hard. I just beat this for the first time a couple days ago and loved it. Great game but terrible boss fights all around except maybe Poison Ivy. Hopefully the bosses in Arkham City are actually bosses.

Game was awesome. Great story, loved the pacing, and combat.

I loved all the small riddles you solve on your way to the next point. Also the combat was very very satisfying and i loved the cheesy slow-mo last attack thing.

I have a soft spot for the Uncharted series because of the subject matter.

The game is awesome. I took the advice of others and started it on Hard difficulty and don't regret it. I haven't touched it in a few weeks, as I can get busy, but the first day I played it for 9 hours on a Saturday. That's pretty crazy for me. I've been meaning to start up again and a thread like this serves as a reminder to me that I should.

This was one of the most pleasant surprises I ever had in a game. The combat was amazing, Hamill was amazing, hell, even the background info overload on all the characters was amazing.

Definitely one of the best 3D adventure games around.

I loved Arkham Asylum and completed it to 100% (both game and trophies). If you manage to get three medals for all the combat challenges, you shouldn't have a problem with hard difficulty. By the time I finished getting all the medals, I knew the combat so well that hard mode was a walk in the park. I think I died a few times, but only due to carelessness or a foolish mistake. Anyway, I love this game. I'll probably replay it again closer to the release of Arkham City.

i never got this until the GOTY ed, expected it to be a kiddie romp but turned out to be bloody awesome, more dark batman i felt.

Loved the humour, especially the joker. Cant wait for the next one.

Have to say, B: AA had one of the most unflattering demos this gen. It practically convinced me not to buy it, and even after all the positive reviews, didn't pick it up until 3 months later.

I'd agree with you if it weren't for that last room, where the demo finally opened up. It completely sold me on the game. Replayed the demo tons of times because of how much fun that part was.
