LTTP: Batman: Arkham Asylum

Galactic Fork

A little fluff between the ears never did any harm...
Gaming journalism has failed by not at all endorsing this game. I searched all over and could barely find anything on it. Still, I decided to pick it up anyway. Wow, how had I never played this game? Why didn't anybody tell me? I just hope at some point there is a sequel. It's doubtful, after how much the game's been ignored, but I remain hopeful. Maybe it could take place in Gotham. Oooh, or maybe some of Gotham could be sectioned off as part of Arkham Asylum or something. Yeah, it could be called "Batman: Arkhamville." That would rock. Too bad we'll probably never see anything like that.

The good:
The combat is definitely the best part. Just stringing so many combos together a lot of discreet animations while surrounded by a huge group of badguys really makes you feel like the Batman. Such fun.

If anything can make you feel more like The Batman than kicking the asses of a half a dozen (+) badguys, it's knocking out a half a dozen(+) badguys silently from the shadows. Knowing that as each of their cohorts fall, the fear in their hearts grows until you notice the urine stain on the last guy's pants (figuratively of course).

Of course what would batman be without his gadgets? While it's essentially the same arsenal that Link has had since LttP, I won't hold that against him. He's Batman and some are nicely integrated into the combat to give you more options. Yes I was often cheap and would lead a group of guys into a nice bat shaped puddle of explosive gel. Plus I spent half the game in detective mode. Excellent addition.

The deteriorating batsuit. A very nice touch, though early in the game I thought the suit took damage based on you getting hit, so I became obsessive about not getting hit in fights and would reload the game if I took damage. I feared the naked Batman. Plus he'd be less like the Batman if he got so hurt early. On the plus side, I got pretty damned good at the combat.

The bad:

Not being able to jump on command. He's the effin Batman! He can jump! I've seen him. You get used it after a while, and the grappling hook and auto jump off cliffs are useful, but jumping when you want to would be nice.

The rotating and zooming camera during fights. It got so annoying when you're fighting and the camera gets so close you can't see any of the enemies charging close to hit you. I'd prefer it not to rotate on its own.
The fighting in the Scarecrow sections were nice, but then you couldn't rotate the camera yourself.

The save system. Room based auto saves with no option to save and reload? Really? Who thought this was a good idea? Even Renegade Kid learned not to use this save system after Dementium: The Ward. Either give save points at assorted places, or a save anywhere option. If there's ever a sequel, I hope they fix that.

The Ugly:

What did they do to Harley Quinn? They turned her from an adorable insane girl to some slutty goth girl. So disappointing. I still love her voice actress.

There you have it. I know it's not much of a party because so few people have played the game, but still. You all should.

I am with I NEED SCISSORS. I want to shoot myself in the face after reading that first paragraph, I know it is supposed to be funny but still.

It was a bit annoying replaying AA with a gamepad from KB/M because I had full control of the camera at all times during combat, but I guess you just have to take the time they give you when it goes slo-mo to move the camera around while also executing an attack or something. I experienced a couple of controller-throwing moments because of the camera while being mobbed (I sometimes refuse to just jump away).

Also, I think the headlines keep changing every week, but is Sorkin still being replaced as Harley for Arkham City?

Joker was clearly one of the better parts of this game. Laughed so hard at his comments.

One part scared me out of my chair tho.
The part where you encounter scaregrow for the third time or so, and you get artifact glitches on your screen and get a bsod was really bad because my old GPU had just died week earlier.

All in all best comicbook adaptation I've played.

That part scared me too.
During the glitchy screen, I kept chanting "please be a scarecrow scene, please be a scarecrow scene" I was especially hopeful because of the overhead broadcast asking if anybody saw the game last night.

Last I heard, she was being replaced by Tara Strong.

I ended up reading about that in a thread by mistake 1 day before I got to that part, so it took away the cool surprise/scare for me :(

What? The game was a GOTY finalist all over the place and got tons of great reviews.

Is this a weak attempt at Astrolading folks?

Haha I was getting freaked out for similar issues.

I do agree with the OP though that despite having won numerous GotYs, I really feel there's a huge amount of merit in ArkhamA that never really got talked about. Hopefully Arkham City has that same level of quality

Um, no they didn't. They gave her a ridiculous nurse cosplay costume. At no point does Harley sleep with every man she says or display any kind of promiscuity.

She is pretty much the same psycho she was in BTAS, and in the comics as far as personality goes.

I meant her outfit is closer to the slutty goth style. Not that she is actually slutty. They sexualized her way too much in my opinion. Wasn't Poison-I've-moved-beyond-pants-Ivy enough?

It's cool how the obvious facetiousness flew over all your heads. Good work!

Batman:AA is the best licensed game ever and one of the best games of this generation.

good one. Kindof weak attempt at sarcasm but sill, game is extraordinary

for a moment, I thought your avatar was a bushy vagina until I noticed the fork

Okay, joke post.

It was a great portrayal of the Batman mythos. Some great touches, the goons become less loyal to the joker as you wipe out their numbers and the interviews were creepy. Zsasz expressed he killed dozens of people because they needed liberation for being zombies and he's obsessed with cutting the mark of “the one who got away.” The Scarecrow sequences were an effective way to explore Batman’s origins, this scene was awesome. If the game wasn’t good enough already, there’s plenty to discover with Metroidvania gameplay, Batman can backtrack and utilise his gadgets for hacking computer systems and by blowing up walls.
