LTTP Cowboy Bebop: See You Space Cowboy...

Overall I was heavily impressed by this show and can now easily see why it is so revered by many. Is there any other anime out there that is on par with this series (mostly in terms of character, level of maturity, etc.) that I should check out? (maybe something recent/modern?)
There's very little, unfortunately. For the most part, anime is very factory-made, with almost every show having exactly the same archetypes and themes, all tailored to hit very specific demographs. However, some gems do exist.

I do always suggest Monster to people, even those who don't watch anime. It's not entirely devoid of a few anime character tropes, but for the most part it could just be a quality crime serial.

It's not dark, and doesn't seem "mature" at first either, but Hataraki Man blew me away with how true-to-life it is when representing working in a media environment, office relationships, and the general struggle (and failure) at maintaining a healthy work/life balance. It's a comedy, true, but that doesn't make it immaturely so. It also has the most convincing depiction of someone being drunk I've ever seen.

But if you're looking for more sci-fi or fantastical, Samurai Champloo is good, yeah.

Berserk is pretty heavy stuff. It's my second favourite after Bebop. As I am not an ass I will let you know that it's based on a never ending manga series so the ending is pretty unstatisfying.

Berserk has one amazing soundtrack!

I vote for Baccano too.

The English voice for Ed in Bebop and Fuu in SC are both terrible, people who regard those as the best dubs must be having selective amnesia.

I thought it was okay, but nothing too special. I prefer something with a more overarching storyline. I can get behind the recommendation for Baccano! though.

It's a great show. But cut out Ed and it would be 10 times better because he almost ruins the fucking show. Samurai Champloo is better.

I'm not gonna lie. Tears were shed at the final episode.

Yeah, Ed was pretty damn annoying, but
I felt sad as hell when he left
. I kinda hated the squirrel thing in Champloo as well, but thankfully it wasn't as prominent.

Cowboy Bebop is my favorite TV series ever.

I'm also in the "I like Ed" group.

Ok the wife and I watched one episode of Baccano (I hope I'M talking about the right show) and never went back. It was strange. People shooting each other in the streets. We didn't understand it at all and I think we meant to watch a few more to kind of make sense of it but we just never did.

I thought the same thing

but the fact I didn't know what was going on made me watch the 2nd episode and that's when the pieces started coming together

It's worth it, just for the fact that it tries things differently than most anime series

maybe you guys didnt like Ed because you didnt know she was A GIRL. a bunch of you guys are referring to her as "he". lol

My favorite anime of all time and to this day nothing has come close (was hoping Kids on a Slope would surpass it but it peaked halfway through). Of course I really haven't watched anime since Bebop and when I do, usually just stuff Watanabe was a part of. Champloo was ok but it just didn't resonate with me the way Bebop did...

Never saw Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Planning on seeing it soon, but debating whether to re-watch the whole series along with it since it's been a few years since I saw the show.

I don't even like anime and I still love cowboy bebop.

One of the greatest shows of all time. and Spike is one of the greatest characters ever.

I've never been a fan of Cowboy Bebop. It was too episodic for me and I hated all the characters. The show is all style over substance.

Going to have to disagree with the anti-Ed sentiments. As a loopy, energetic child, she was a necessary counterbalance that kept the show from getting to mopey, imo.

And as someone who typically always watches subbed, I've gotta say this is one of maybe three or four shows I prefer the English dub. (Baccano's English dub was pretty awesome as well.)

Still really good even after learning that Yoko Kanno plagiarized a lot of the music

I think when having to make a 100 track soundtrack for multiple anime series a musician is allowed to be influenced.

I mean if a story is allowed to borrow the same basic premise as another story or a character design is allowed to look similar from another character, then I think it's fine

She made changes to make it different enough, but still pay homage to the original work

How do you guys feel about the movie anyway? I thought it was excellent. Just as good or better than any episode of the show. Which is quite rare for a movie based on a TV series, they're usual complete crap.

Yeah I really have to disagree with the people saying the show would be better off without Ed. Yeah her and Ein were used mostly for comic relief, but I felt that they were both at times funny, and also helped to apply a comedic tone at times where otherwise Bebop would be too depressing. Having a hyperactive kid on the team I thought helped to diversify the group as a whole, and I thought her goodbye from the team in episode 24 was extremely well done.

Also in regards to the movie, it was solid and kept with the Bebop style, though I do think it tends to drag on a little bit in the middle, there were still some great moments in the movie.

Some really good suggestions in here. As others have said, Champloo is like Bebop's crazy Hip hop samurai twinr. It's a must if you liked Bebop.

I can vouch for Baccano! and Ghost in the Shell (both seasons) as shows that are,in a way similar, to Bebop. Definitely check them out.

Whoever mentioned Mushishi, that is an excellent show. It's nothing like Bebop but no less greater.

If you're into dark subject matter OP, check out Shigurui: Death Frenzy. It's about two warriors trying to best one another and things go absolutely insane. One of the few shows out there where the violence is taken to an artistic level of depravity.

One of my favorite moments in the series, and after seeing this it instantly made Faye my most sympathized with character of the Bebop crew. (don't know if my favorite character overall is her or Spike though) Basically a Captain America/Fry backstory but done with much more tragedy and done right in my opinion. What especially got to me was when her younger self was cheering her on to do her best, and then later in the series when she finally gets her memory back and tells Spike "sorry".

Awesome show. It's a gold mine waiting to happen is this, whoever brings it to the big screen will make a fortune basically.

Bebop is fantastic, arguably one of the best shows ever produced. I enjoyed when it was on weekdays on Adult Swim, and currently my wife (who isn't quite the anime nut) and I are going through the whole series, and we are enjoying so far.

Samurai Champloo is certainly on par and tells fantastic stories. Watanabe is amazing.

One recommendation I can make is Code Geass. It has a character driven plot with lots of action. A fun series overall.

Did she? Well props to her for owning up to the fact she's a hack. And no, she copied entire sections/melodies of songs and just changed their keys. That's not being influenced, that's fucking stealing.

It's not just being influenced, in many of these instances she went to a lot of trouble to painstakingly replicate the arrangements in these tracks. It's actually pretty impressive how close they are. They are not shitty 2nd-rate copies by any means.
