Pretty much how I feel. GitS needs a long form medium to work. A movie run time doesnt cut it, especially when you feeling like spending long periods of time navel gazing. A TV show can do that and did most of it through the tachikomas and often tied that naval gazing back into the themes of the episode or the main storyline. Plus I also found the corporate and political manipulations of the first season and the military escalation and revolution plots in the 2nd season as interesting additions to the transhumanism themes. I think it was smart not to make transhumanism the main trust of either season but let it run in the background all the time.

Pretty much what I said earlier and I agree 10000%..

Augh, I get choked up just thinking about the final episode. Like someone mentioned, Faye and Spike speech was powerful. And Spike's
last word. :'[
Recommended to any tv show fan.

Loved the show when I was younger. My favorite character was Fay. I went searching for some artwork, but the internet tends to ruin everything........

I actually just finished with my girlfriend (2nd time watching the whole thing through), it was her first time. She loved it! It also confirmed that this is in my top 5 shows period, best anime. I've seen about 5 series and a bunch of anime movies, and this is definitely top of the top. The ending is so beautiful, the show itself is just so.. damn near perfect. Awesome US dub, only anime I listen to english dub.. Feels right. Champloo has to be japanese for me.

It's weird, I watched episodes throughout my life because of my older brother and adult swim. The ending was one of the first images I saw, and since then that still has been stuck in my head.

How is the movie? I saw it when I was a kid, can't remember much. When does it take place?

I see the movies as focusing on how transhumanism affects the individual whereas the series focuses on how transhumanism affects society. With the series, they have more time to show different aspects of technology's effects on society such as those Luddite terrorists or the Hispanic revolutionary that is pretty much immortal.

While I love the movies for introducing me to cyberpunk, I find it hard to sit through them anymore. They're just so... boring. And the second one can come off as pretentious since a lot of the lines are just quotes. There's a good mystery and story in Innocence, but the dry and stilted dialogue just drains all of the entertainment value out. We don't want to hear quotes, we want to hear the characters speak with their own voices. Still, Innocence is beautiful to look at, though.

Did she? Well props to her for owning up to the fact she's a hack. And no, she copied entire sections/melodies of songs and just changed their keys. That's not being influenced, that's fucking stealing.

Hack? She was given songs by the director and was told to create something like it within a tight deadline. This is like blaming Daft Punk for taking songs and making them their own when both artists did credit the original artists themselves.

Fuck your opinion and try getting a job in production. The fact that she made this work is amazing by itself.

Samurai Champloo is good right up to the subplot of the blind musician. It was even better than Bebop till then, but then it had to shit the bed with the final.

Damn. Some of you guys can be such downers. Durarara is easily one of my favorite shows of the past few years. To see it get shit on makes me want to slap a bitch.

You should slap the people responsible for it instead.
All Cowboy Bebop threads eventually turn into GITS threads. It's some kind of law.
all shows that aired on adult swim are like the same thing anyways i guess?

I remember when this show used to come on Adult Swim or Toonami or whatever it was back in the day when I first saw it.

Used to stay up late to watch it, around 1 or 2 in the morning. I still remember seeing the final episode as a 12 or 13 year old, man I thought that was some powerful stuff. I really did carry that weight.

Oh but it is. The characters are much better and the gun play is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better. Don't even get me started on on Vash or Wolfwood would kick anyones butt from Cowboy Bebop.
Characters aren't close, and they have the unfair advantage of crazy shit. Wolfwood would get his shit kicked in by Spike though man, lets be real.

So, what do you guys think of the Bebop movie? Sorry to ask again, just curious.

It's good. Great animation and music, plot kind of feels like an episode of the series stretched long, but it still works.

Picked it up on DVD a few years ago, I like it a lot.

The longer structure of a TV show really helped Bebop, bouncing around the galaxy and whatnot, so obviously that's sort of lost in a movie mostly set in one place (Mars I believe) but it's a fun side story.

I've thought about it a fair bit myself when I was going on an Oshii binge a few months ago and I think it comes down to characterization. Oshii was working with solid and entertaining characters in Beautiful Dreamer from the Urusei Yatsura manga/TV series. Even though he went off in his own direction with the story (in a good way, I think) I felt more of a connection to the characters in that film than any of his subsequent ones. I'm not even a fan of the UY series outside Beautiful Dreamer. There was also more of a sense of things happening, despite the relaxed pace. GITS, while it is fucking gorgeous to look at, especially in the fight scenes, has to struggle and crawl story-wise to get to those parts.

You thought GitS movie story was good? It was really wasn't. It tries to take on way too much for the runtime it is giving. That's why the show is so much better, much more exposure to it. Never knew people actually thought the movies had a well done story or anything, always saw it praised for the animation. The connection between the two is that you talked about Durarara trying to juggle something and failing and GitS movie basically does the exact same thing... but just not interconnected storylines. It tries too much for the time that it is giving. Not that hard to connect the two.

How are these consecutive posts? They're completely opposite critiques.

The former makes a lot more sense to me than the latter, though I think that the first GitS movie is pretty great.

Bebop is an absolutely fantastic TV series, though. People have mentioned a lot of other good shows, but for some reason, when I think of stuff I've watched recently that might scratch the same itch, I think about Gunslinger Girl. It's a very different setting, and the problems the characters struggle with are different, but there's a similar melancholy to its tone. It's significantly better than its premise should allow.

Pretty neat how tight deadlines mean you can copy entire sections/arrangements of songs now and still be credited as an amazing composer. And no, only that Tom Waits cover she did is similar to Daft Punk's use of sampling save for maybe Robot Rock which is very Kanno-esque in its plagiarism.

I loved everything about CB except Spike....and his 'choices' ....sense...they made none.....I prefer Outlaw Star/Gene Starwind (extremely underrated show)

IIRC he's supposed to be somewhat suicidal. They're not supposed to make very much sense.

I might be wrong though, it's been a long time.

This is true. Lovely set of characters, nice animation. It somehow reminded me of Slayers a lot. Same kind of humor, same type of characters.

Mushroom Samba and ESPECIALLY Toys in the Attic are my favorite episodes of Cowboy Bebop.
Toys in the Attic is the episode with
that scary black slime coming out of the fridge and poisoning everybody
right?

Is this coming state side? CB and Wolf's Rain on BD would complete me.

Speaking of which, I too recommend Wolf's Rain if the OP is looking for something mature and tasteful in anime.
<----BTW that's my avatar.

It probably has the best art I've seen in anime too. No, don't try to refute me with some new aged fancy special FX dipped scenes from other anime. I'm talking ART. Like you can freeze a scene from the show and actually put in in a gallery.

I thought about mentioning it but it's not super stylish like Bebop :l

But it is still amazing

That's why it's amazing, it's a realistic take on space that still manages to be super powerful

I honestly teared up during the last episode. So powerful. Go Hachimaki.

That one part with Ai an episode before that got to me. It was powerful.

I'm not gonna lie, Planetes makes me want to be a garbage man in space.

the characters started acting weird and illogical toward the end but it was a really good series overall. There's lots of good series from that time period.

This thread inspired me and I watched the first 7 or so episodes and it all seems to be monster of the week outside of 1 episode. At some point does it turn into more of a serial with a compelling overarching storyline?

(sorry, I havent read most of the thread to avoid spoilers)

Red line starts a bit later. First it's really one bounty per ep then you have glimps of narration about the past and the story for each character in some episodes until the glorious 4 last eps
