Tried playing this game multiple times over the years but it just never clicked for some reason, I almost ALWAYS for some get to the motorcycle fight and just stop? No idea why.

INSERT STEAM DECK OLED!

Something about being able to suspend the deck let me tackle the game one case at at time, I didn't feel super duper obligated to put in a ton of time at once which I think is why I always put it down, the timer is STRESSFUL but it also felt like the closets thing we'll ever get to 24 in video game form. Additionally, I've been on a classic games binge the past year, so many modern titles just aren't doing it for me. Chris Sawyer of Roller Coaster Tycoon fame said something along the lines of "Old games have a certain clunkiness that missing from modern games" and boy is he right, because it applies to this game. A true rough diamond, the kinda 8/10 experiences we don't get anymore. Nothing about is perfect, but so much is just good enough that everything comes together in a ~PERFECT BLEND~

  1. The game menu and Franks movement is clunky but feels very purposeful
  2. Resident Evil like but with a 360 analog movement system
  3. The moves you get from leveling have seemingly simple inputs, but are hard to pull off and once you get hold of it you're roundhouse kicking, zombie leaping and knee dropping like a mugggg
  4. Survivors are dumb feels almost deliberate (even though it's clearly bad pathfinding), as I would say (outside of maybe a few survivors) everyone felt like a specific puzzle to solve
  5. The map is also super Resident Evil, especially when you unlock the shortcuts and eventually the entire mall feels like an interconnected sandbox
  6. Psychopath battles are just plain fun and I love they all have so much personality with unique situations, my friend is a regional manager at Kroger and I sent him the grocery store psycho and he couldn't stop laughing
  7. Steve Blum is 2 psychos and random voices, truly the Nolan North of his time
  8. I can't say I was super impressed with the camera ability, but it definitely added personality to certain situations which was appreciated like reuniting couples

Beat Adam the clown. Get his mini-chainsaws. Get the shortcut through the air conditioning to skip the courtyard. Get the books that extend the life of the mini-chainsaws.
Do these things, and the game is GOAT material.

Trivializes it but also takes away a lot of frustration, weapons tend to break fast and share slots with heals. Especially early on you don't have much space. Chainsaw is kinda dangerous during escort though.

The books were the ones in the paradise plaza bookstore, and Sir book a lot close to the clown. I believe entertainment, engineering and criminal record. If you keep those 3, you can make like 2400 kills per chainsaw.

Also, always throw a mannequin at the entry point. The Torso is fucking good (it goes into your slot) and also make short work of psychos before you have the saws.

As good as Dead Rising is, I liked Dead Rising 2 slightly better. The Dawn of the Dead fan in me likes part 1 for the setting, but I feel like the gameplay in 2 is more satisfying.
