Really LTTP: Super Metroid

If I was trapped on an island and only could have 1 game with me until the end of time, it would be Super Metroid.

For me, the greatest Metroidvanias are:
1) Super Metroid
2) Ori Will of the Wisps
3) Castlevania SotN

I hear that people who hate Super Metroid dont get into heaven btw.
For a fucking idiot your taste is pretty legit tho 🧐

Maybe bloodstained should replace ori but eh

For what it's worth, I thought Fusion was fantastic, but I haven't played it since GBA SP 20 years ago. I also love SOTN, but I really thought Dread was really meh. The map design and EMMIs were trash TBH

Let's look at Chrono Trigger or Super Mario World or A Link to the Past as games from that era to play today. They simply haven't aged and are just as good to play today as its counterparts in the genre.

Super Metroid doesn't hold the test of time in the Metroidvania department…
It's hard to divorce my feelings on Super Metroid from nostalgia because I remember how amazing and groundbreaking it was when it first came out. I've got an SNES in my garage and I still boot up those games you mentioned from time to time, and I have to agree that Metroid doesn't hold up as well. Still a great game, still fun to play, but I don't think it's a contender for "best game in its genre" in the way that Super Mario World, Chrono Trigger or A Link to the Past are. Cheers

I generally don't replay Metroidvanias except symphony of the night.

Just started playing this and got through Kraid's boss fight for the first time ever. Thought about making an LTTP but saw this thread.

The good:
-Impressive presentation for a 1994 SNES game: the atmosphere, cutscenes, map/inventory UI especially
-It is satisfying to unlock new abilities and new paths through an open-to-explore map
-Running while holding the left/right triggers to shoot up/down at angles is dope
-The environment/level design teaching you how to use mechanics is masterful

The mixed:
-Some tracks are bangers, most (so far) are pretty meh

The bad:
-The jump mechanics suck. Samus will jump straight up + two inches over, or she jumps at a 45-degree angle.
-Wall-jumps are seemingly integral but also like a hidden mechanic, and are painful to execute. Imagine having to time a Sekiro/Lies of P parry every time you want to do a wall-jump
-Without a guide, how in the world are you supposed to know where some hidden paths are without trying every combination of resource on every piece of the environment?

I'm glad I played this far, but I think I've had my fill, and won't play any further.

Might give Metroid Prime a go. I hear that's aged better.

This game is heralded as one of the best games of all time. Often in top 10 lists.

I was a scrub growing up who never had his own Super Nintendo. So oddly enough my Metroid playing has been regulated to prime and dread. I've tried to get into super a few times in the past but I never committed.

I completed dread recently which I adored. THIS was peak gaming for me. So I figured people still consider SM better than this so it must be even better than Dread. Right? Right!?

Fuck no. Lmao. 😂 what is this over hyped nostalgia bait you mother fuckers glaze this atrocious game for?

It starts off good. All the usual goodies, exploring, teleporters, bosses, new tools, etc. Then it falls deep off a cliff with inconsistent shit jump mechanics galore. Paths so stupidly hidden it forces you to look up a guide unless you want to beat your brains into oblivion trying to figure it out on your own.

I cannot stress how shit space jump or wall jump is in this game. Imagine if Mario was this clunky lol that a simple double jump mechanic or wall jump was regulated to this retarded system. Thank god for Megaman X showing how wall jumps should work.

Before I subject myself to more nostalgia bait is Fusion better or am I going to get baited again?

Super Metroid is a 6/10. Dread is a 9/10. Prime is a 9/10. Change my mind.
Hey don't blame your shitty childhood leading you to becoming a miserable adult on GAF.

Spoiler you can get the x-ray scope later on to find hidden paths and items , also alot of movement issues easily go away when you get items like high jump, speed boots and screw attack which is basically flying and a bunch of hidden mechanics which are hinted at in the preview at an idled start screen or the creatures in game . You should keep going , the way Samus gets faster and more powerful from start to finish is such a great experience that the problems you expressed are easily elevated through progression

With Metroid Dread I enjoyed my time with that game immensely start to finish and never got frustrated with it.

I totally agree there is no soundtrack to it, and I would loved some more inspired levels.

Super Metroid when you're first playing in those initial 3-4 hours for me was aiming to be a 10/10. Music, atmosphere, pixel art, and exploration. I didn't feel it remained this quality once you complete 2/4 main bosses. It falls right off a cliff… I had the fun constantly being drained with the issues I mentioned above. I still beat it around 7 hours but the praise I think is too much. The games I listed above are all timeless classics that withstand the test of time and are worth all their praise.

Super Metroid annihilates SotN. Better exploration, none of the backtracking excess.

By dated controls, I hope no one's referring to the select toggle for missiles. Far more convenient than holding the shoulder button, and frees the latter for diagonal aiming.

Super is the only good Metroid game.

1 and 2 are 8-bit garbage.

Zero Mission, Fusion, Return, and Dread are casualized knock offs of Super.

The Primes are a mixture of Doom 3 and Jumping Flash and not really Metroid games.

The first one is all right.

Other M doesn't even need to be considered.

Damn, that's a really bad opinion and OP.

Wall jump isn't even needed for 99% of the game, it's mostly used for speedruns and shortcuts.

Also you needed a guide for this game? Yeah, that's a skill issue right there.

You basically you are shit at it and its therefore a poor game.

Come on man. I beat this game in 1994 as a 15 year old with no internet, no guides, no artificial aid whatsoever, in a weekend. It's got an elaborate auto-map and many subtle clues throughout, what else do you want it to do? Suck your dick while you press A to win?
I was about to say the exact same thing (well, without the dick sucking part, which is hilarious btw).

Unfortunately, younger players have used to excessive hand holding and lack the patience to figure out something for themselves the moment they get stuck for more than 5 seconds.

Wall jumps can be very "shit". Until today for me they are a pain to do. But "space jump"?? More of a skill issue. 🤷‍♂️

If wall jump was too easy and obvious, you'd break progression frequently, potentially skipping major sections, or possibly end up confusing yourself. There's a "tutorial" for it in-game and you're stuck down there until you get the hang of it. Press Jump a split second after you press away from the wall, Samus even has a special animation for it; that thing where when you press away she looks like she's grabbing the wall instead of somersaulting. Also you can only do it while somersaulting. You can't do it with non-flipping jump.

Yes, it's basically impossible to do by mistake, and it is understandable to have difficulty with it, but Samus' jumping physics actually make it perfect. Practice it on long flat walls, if you want to become good enough at it for small short walls.

Space Jump is just press Jump on your way down from a somersault jump. There's a tiny bit of timing to it, but not really if you just wait until you're falling. Again, you can't space jump without somersaulting.

The only part I can see someone getting stuck is not realizing you can blow up the tube with a power bomb. The game does give you a clue with the already broken one, and there's a title screen attract demo that actually shows you to do exactly that, iirc.

I still remember my original time of beating this game when I bought it for SNES, a little over 9 hours. The next day I replayed it and beat it in an hour and a half. Empty areas in the map basically tell you where to go.

Personally I still think some of the shinespark secret items in every game after Super Metroid are much harder than anything in this game. Especially Dread has some really tricky ones that I wouldn't have gotten without an explanation and video.
