LTTP: Driver San Francisco thread of unexpected brilliance

Wow, this has to be the biggest positive surprise of the year. Popped in the game around 2PM hangoverish, didn't expect much. Now it's 3:15AM and I have completed the game in a single sitting - something I think I last did with Blast Corps. This game is so full of awesome its hard to know where to begin.

Tutorial
The game does an amazing job in introducing all the bizarre gameplay concepts one by one in a way that makes them feel a part of the storyline, rather than a tutorial. Rarely if ever have I seen a game mechanic unfold so beautifully.

Presentation
The way the game is presented in the game is amazing. It feels like a TV series at times and a movie at others. Every once in a while the player is treated with a superb 'previously on Driver' recap on the story.

Storyline
The story is one of the best I have seen in game. While it is obviously inspired by Life on Mars, the whole concept holds together incredibly well and never becomes entirely predictable. The cast is perfectly sized - enough people to provide variety, but few enough to make it fun to follow. I had genuine interest in the plot, which is always a feat for a videogame.

Writing
The writing in the game is consistently excellent, and really funny at times. The team has written a lot of lines to random NPCs you sit in cars with, and makes the most out of the mindjacking gag in their writing. Writing a funny game is really hard, and Driver San Francisco is probably the funniest I have ever played.

Setting and visuals
The San Francisco setting is well executed with many recognizable elements, but it's not accurate - more of a miniatyre city than the real thing. The graphics were only decent at best, while the cut scenes and people modelling was fantastic.

Gameplay
Driver San Francisco combines a seemingly endless variety of gameplay with a difficulty just perfect, resulting in a game I found impossible to put down. I was constantly surprised by new gameplay ideas and game types and wanted to keep on seeing more. I was impressed with how much mileage they got out of driving in terms of different mission types, I never felt I was repeating the same thing over and again. Also, I loved the contoversial mindjacking mechanic - it was really well integrated to takedown missions. The difficulty was absolutely brilliant - tough enough to constantly keep me at the edge of my seat, but still never frustrating. Many missions took multiple practice rounds to finish - making succeeding that much sweeter.

Lastability
While I took some 10h to finish the game, it seems that I have only scratched the surface, with tons of challenges and collectibles and different game modes remaining. I would figure there is another 10h in the game at the very least.

BOTTOMLINE
Take the most fun crashing bits of Burnout 3, the most fun cop chases and free roaming gameplay from Need for Speed Most Wanted, the epic plot treatment of Grand Theft Auto IV and combine them into a perfectly balanced and polished package - you'll get Driver San Francisco.

9/10

I assume the game did not sell a whole lot. This would be no surprise given how the marketing and packaging completely missed the Life on Mars epic storyline qualities of the game. The packaging looks bland, and even the logo has just the same old tired 90s Serpentine Bold low budget design. Had I known the depth and quality of the plot I would have jumped in much earlier.

Oh wow, anything that takes things from Burnout 3 and NFS Most Wanted is definitely on my to buy on Steam sale list, but it has some kind of 'epic plot' like GTA4 has? One of these things is not like the other...

Imagine the tacky characters from NFS MW replaced with genuinely interesting TV series style characters, and the embarrassing banter of NFS MW replaced with witty jokes, and a story arc like the ones in GTAIV DLC and you have the plot

I ordered this for $20 due to Black Friday and I can't fucking wait to get it. Really enjoyed the demo a lot and the multiplayer was surprisingly fun!

Oh the GTA4 episodes not necessarily the main game, now your talking. $34 during Steam sale is too much for me to try out especially considering it's Ubisoft so who knows what the DRM is, but you have piqued my interest. Nice mini-review.

Yup and its on the digital version is $25 or $27.49 for the deluxe. I'm waiting for $20 or less for the standard or deluxe on steam or elsewhere.

i saw it at walmart today for 20. damn shame that such a fine game did so poorly. one of the best games i have played all year. best driving game easily. forza is great but driver is amazing.

Nicely put. I can feel the enthusiasm from here and will have to re-prioritize some of the backlog.

I have the digital release from PSN and play a mission or two between mw3 marathons. I love how -

* you can drive on the wrong side of the road onto incoming traffic. No racing game lets you do this for a long distances but the traffic in Driver:SF is just al dente enough to pull this off for long long stretches.

* the writing's so good. that you'll load up the game just for the tv-style banter and missions and then stay back for the solid gameplay.

Great game ubisoft. For once this year.

This game is so beautifully fucking insane. I wish the cars handled a bit better and the game looked a bit slicker but, wow.

Also, Dirtbombs in the soundtrack. This happens to be a GREAT soundtrack.

It's my "Feel good game of the year." Cheesy as that sounds its the best way to describe it. The story, the characters, the dialogue, the music and the gameplay all come together in such a fantastic, upbeat way. The little incidental dialogue Tanner has with people when he zips into people's cars and his relationship with his partner are so well written.

the game was surprisingly good. I thought the whole "transferring from car to car" thing was going to be silly. Turned out to be the most brilliant thing about the game.

You guys should try getting in a truck on the highway and smashing into the opposite traffic. Then keep transferring to other cars and crash into the truck to create a massive pile up. Just watch what happens when the truck is totally broke. For me it flew up 500 meters in the air or something and came smashing down on the other side of the road on top of a bunch of cars.

This has happened to me a couple of times now, it's hilarious!

Okay, I'm convinced. It's strange hearing nothing but positive word-of-mouth for a Driver title.

Will grab it in the xmas sale.

This game is one of the best surprises for this year, that's for sure. Let me quote myself from the underrated games thread:

Driver San Francisco

Why it's overlooked: the Driver brand was seriously damaged by the previous game(s), Ubisoft's reputation isn't too hot either, the 'Shift' gameplay mechanic (and the storyline that comes with it) raised a lot of eyebrows, the game was pushed back then the online pass was borked, handling in the SP demo left a lot to be desired...

Why you should play it: the driving model is a lot of fun (halfway between arcade and sim), the incidental dialogue when you shift from car to car is quite funny as is the banter between Tanner and Jones, it's a 60 FPS open world racer with more than a hundred cars both old and new, the story and side missions are varied enough that you won't run out of things to do before 40-50 hours, the central mechanic is actually totally awesome because it allows you to make the game as hard or as easy as you wish (and driving a fire truck in the opposite lane never gets old), it has that garage mission from the first Driver, multiplayer modes are a breath of fresh air and never get old, and what's wrong with a videogame requiring suspension of disbelief?

Best $20 I ever spent. Shit, I feel bad for not buying it for full price. I would have bought it for $60. It's that good.

Most underrated game of 2011 for sure.

I bought it in a 50% off sale a month ago on Steam. I've played a bit of it, and while it seems to be a fun game, I still think the driving physics are generic and doesn't really feel like Driver at all.

When I've put some more time into it, maybe I'll change my mind, but so far I'm not overly impressed.

It is indeed an amazing and underrated gem. But you aren't late to the party. What's the deal with LTTP's a handful of weeks after release lately?

I just started playing it this weekend after picking it up on BF.

The best aspect of the game is the instant jumping between cars. No loading, you can just pull back on the city, select a car, then instantly be in it.

On chapter 3, and honestly I am loving the side stuff even more than the story.

Does this have wheel support on the PS3/PC?

The shift system would make it very difficult to play with a wheel. I guess it could work on PC where you could switch to something else for the shift, but on a console I don't see it.

PC version has wheel support, yeah.

There's no HDR though, so if you like bloom and filters you're out of luck.

Did you guys use Preset 1, 2 or 3 for the driving controls? It's really annoying that there's no option to have Ram on L1 and Boost on a face button like [].

Having Boost on Up makes it hard for me to stay completely straight when boosting, and having it on R1 means I have to use my middle finger on R2 to accelerate (which is uncomfortable) or I have to take my index finger off accelerate whenever I want to boost.

This game and ace combat have waited long enough for me to play them, I will play it soon as I hear good things from my work mates too.

I might have to give this a try. The mindjacking thing really threw me off and is the reason I didn't buy it on release. Sounds like the rest makes up for the part I probably won't like.

Yeah I thought it was going to be dumb too- but not only does it work but it's one of the coolest things about the game. It does help that everything else is so solid, too.

I think I just went with the default whatever that was. It's been a while though so I don't remember the controller layout.

Can you walk about the city or did they give up on that idea?

No walking, just driving. You can also shift instantly to a top down view and transfer to another car on the fly. It works and it's awesome.
I really find it hard to come up with negative things to say about this game. Even the online is great fun. I thought the final boss battle was a little frustrating but that's about it.

GET THIS GAME. NOW.

I tried the online yesterday on PS3 and had no trouble finding people to play with. 6-playert takedown with 5 people as cops constantly swapping between cars to catch the other players is crazy. I'll definitely be playing more of the multiplayer so add me on PSN if you will be playing it online, too.

Giantbomb's GOTY podcast segment on "best surprise" really sold me on this game. It's too bad that I had to listen to te big reveal for it to catch my interest though. That probably would have been a holy shit moment had I gone in blind

I support this thread.
Also to note that the feeling of the cars is awesome. You can clearly see its made by Reflections guys. They have this way of making you feel the weight and suspension and in a racing game, its detrimental that the car feels great for having fun.

Life goes fast on the internettes. 30 minutes real life = yesterday ;)

When Jeff was talking about it last fall, I was super interested, but I was waiting for it to hit the $20 or $30 price point to play it which I think there are places that have it on sale for $30, so maybe.

I remember a CAG thread where a bunch of guys was getting it off Amazon for cheap just to trade in during Best Buy's trade in booster period this year. I had no idea the game was any good. I just assumed it was terrible given the Driver name :l

Don't worry there's tons of other cool stuff. That's just one mission and swear to god I had forgotten it until Jeff was talking about it; not that it's not memorable, but the rest of the game is so excellent it makes individual parts not stand out as much. Really the heart and soul to the game for me is the story, the dialogue, the music and the way the cars handle.
