LttP: Exit

I'd played a demo of this game before, and wasn't all that impressed. I've always been somewhat bothered by games that sacrificed tight controls for smoother movement, such as the original Prince of Persia games. It's not a killing factor, mind you, as I very much enjoyed the original Prince of Persia (wasn't much a fan of the second) and the PS1 Oddworld games and some others that I can't think of off the top of my head. But I had some cash and it was only ten bucks, so I decided to give it a shot.

Anyway, after playing it for a bit... this is how puzzles in video games should be. They actually make you think. They're more than, "Use item A to get past barrier B," or, "Move this block to a switch on the other end of the room," or things like that. You're given a clearly defined set of rules and told to complete some levels based on these rules. Sometimes you have to dick around for a bit before you can figure it out, but the moment it clicks and you realize exactly what you need to do, that's a great feeling that you just don't get enough from games these days.

The people who design the puzzles in Zelda, God of War, Prince of Persia, really any game that has puzzles that could be even vaguely comparable to these, need to play this game and take notes. Very rarely have I encountered the same kind of, "Oh, I get it!" moments in other games that I encounter in nearly every level of Exit. And the few times that has happened, it's typically from something like seeing a switch that I didn't see before, not from actually figuring out a puzzle.

I've gotten over the controls for the most part, but I still have issues with the running jump. Sometimes I'll jump too early early and barely grab the ledge and lose time, or miss it completely and have to start over, and sometimes I'll press it too late and just run straight off the edge.

On a more negative note, I have to say that this game has the most annoying NPCs ever by far. Each one has a total of like two lines to randomly shout ever two seconds. Hearing someone complain that they need a shower twenty times in a row made me turn the sound off when I play the game. And they're so stupid. I hate having to lead them over to the base of some stairs, then lead them to the top of the stairs, then lead them where I want them to go, instead of just telling them to go pick up the damn pickaxe on the second level.

Overall though, it's a great game that I think deserves some loving. If you have a PSP, check it out. And I hear it's on XBLA, too?

I've been playing this game FOREVER!!

like I play it and get hooked for a long time... then stop playing it.

I'm on the last 10 stages too... as of like last september lol.

one day tho... I will beat it!

I gotta perfect score on every stage so far too!! :D

^^ I took this picture at Fry's Electronics

everybody needs to buy Exit!

it's the best budget title and there's plenty to go around!!

Absolutely adore the Exit games. Best thing Taito's done in years (next to Space Invaders Extreme).

That photo makes me sad, JEKKI. ;_; No wonder the sequel never got an American release (though the Euro version is dirt cheap now).

Anyone know what's going on with the DS Exit? Ever getting a US/Euro release? =o

WTF? Why do I have so much trouble finding PSP games I'm looking for when that place is pretty much loaded with them? I mean I've been looking for Gripshift for a while now, haven't seen a single copy. Yet right there, your store's got a bunch of them.

And holy crap at all the Exit games. I don't think I've ever seen that many copies of one game in the same place before.

Meh I didn't really care for the game too much, but then I much prefer action over strict puzzles so maybe that has something to do with it. Awesome animations though...

I want to like it, but it's soooooooo slooooooooooow. Dying on the last part of a stage and then having to do everything over is a nightmare, especially as the stages get more complex.

Same exact situation at my local Fry's as well. :lol I really don't know why they so many copies of Exit.

But for $9.99, it's a kick-ass game.

I bought my PSP for Exit.

I really hope the DS version is localized; it's in that awkward category for me that if it's not going to be localized, Ill import, but since it might be I'm still waiting.

Guess there's no Fry's where you live. :D

I just tried the demo on XBLA. It seemed fun, but the character movement was too slow and awkward. The controls were sort of stupidly laid out...

It was somewhat fun, and I can see how the complexity could ramp up quite high.

I got this because I really like puzzle platformers but unfortunately the game ever clicked with me; hated how the momentum of the game was handled. Where I put over 40 hours and still haven't completed Mario vs DK, loved what I played of N, but yet I played 5 levels of this game and shelved it.

Yes yes yes yes yes. Yes.

I just shake my head when playing most action adventure games, the "puzzles" they have there where it's instantly obvious what you have to do feels so pointless. Hell, even most games labelled as a puzzle game fails miserably.

I'd love to see more puzzle games similar to Exit. Being forced to actually *think* feels so refreshing.

Meh keep it in its own genre, I don't play action games to think out cerebral problems I play them to have fun...
