With a 15 year development time, it was obvious by the time it came out it wasn't going to please everyone...

All Metroids after Echoes are disappointing. Except for Prime Remastered.

I dropped it extremely early, when those robots started chasing me. I hate shit like that in games. I'll never go back to it. Shame, since I was really wanting a 2D Metroid.

Same! Seemed fun up until that point. Honestly, it may still be great. I should go back and give it another chance, but I just wasn't in the mood for that kind of evasion gameplay at the time.

The bosses sucked in that it doesn't really matter how many upgrades you have. More or less their difficulty is the same, which goes against Metroid's core design. And the gameplay during those fights also belongs in other games, i didn't feel like i'm playing Metroid.

Also, i thought the music was completely forgettable.

Other than that, it was OK. Though doing a 100% item run was a nightmare because of how hard some of the acrobatics you had to do were.

Quite a few of the complaints in this thread are reminding me of Metroid Fusion. I'll set my expectations to that level when I eventually pick this game up.

Extremely linear despite the game pulling out all the stops to suggest the illusion of it being anything but, and I was genuinely shocked by the low rent presentation for a second party Nintendo title.

Some very nice puzzles, and traversal/combat always felt good.

Hugely overrated at release but still a comfy joint worth the asking price overall. Samus Returns was better though.

I fucked it off after a few days this past Christmas and tried Metroid Prime Remastered for the first time ever which has since become an absolute instant all time favourite for me. Shame about Dread, I wanted more Super Metroid/Fusion etc. Got a horribly dull sterile half arsed aimless impression of them instead.

Controls and visuals were just what I wanted, everything else was terrible.
Should’ve given the game to Moon Studios, they would’ve knocked it outta the park.

I know some of you are just fanboys pre-empting Metroid hate before being blown away in a few weeks by MP4 ,but I can't sit here an read these junk takes about one of the greatest games most here seemed to not even have played. 😡🖕

haha yeah i was squinting looking at the screen 10cm from my face.
I was too. Now, i do wear contacts or glasses, but i prefer to play with the Switch in Docked Mode.

My sofa is 10 feet from the tv or so, and DAMN is Samus small on the tv. This is not a joke, if Switch 1 games were going to get Deluxe versions on Switch 2, Dread would be one of my top choices. Not because it was bad, but I would love the graphics and text to be bigger on more powerful hardware. Plus a easy mode.

i just beat the game, last boss second phase was unnecessarily long, i thought i wasn't damaging him at all. Had to switch to claw mode to be able to hit the shoot button fast enough, so had to use the pad as an arcade machine 😅
cool ending sequence though, worthy of a Metroid.

On the blackholes? I think you can power bomb them instead of spamming missiles.

Was a long time ago since I fought him.

no, when he gets wings. then third phase i was lucky to beat it the first time, and at the end after samus transforms i thought i had to charge the beam with R button and failed until realizing i just had to hold the Y 😅

I liked it quite a bit, played it twice back to back and gave it my GOTY (though 2021 wasn't a super stacked year or anything).

Would be kind of fun now that I think about it, to go through and rank my GOTY picks in order from best to least best. New project in order...

There are some difficulty spikes the game could train you with more difficulty as you progress between points...but man Dread is the best Metroid in a while to me still.

I'm hoping we don't have to wait too long before they do another 2d one.

I liked it but I thought it was too hard. I got to the last boss and gave up which didn't make me feel great. They added the easy mode since then so I want to try again. One other thing was that the rooms weren't so unique. I want them to be "chunky in design philosophy" and memorable. It might be fine but I'm thinking this because it's the first time I played it, and the game is so much bigger making that more difficult.

No Silksong? = Delivering the pain.
As someone who thinks Super Metroid is one of the greatest games ever made, I could not understand the hype that Dread got. It’s linear, it’s handholdy, and the EMMI rooms were an absolute pain in the ass.

It was dreadful(hah) to play and I had to force myself to finish it. One of the biggest disappointments of my gaming life.

I liked MP3, I liked the motion control as well. Also the easy aiming.

I also liked the different worlds, not the usual lava and ice.
My man! I think it was excellent and has an unearned bad reputation. I have the Metroid Prime Trilogy disc for Wii and I skipped MP2 because it was too similar to MP1. But MP3 felt fresh and like they wanted to try out some new ideas. The IP was also an absolutely perfect fit for the Wiimote and nunchuk.

Awful excuse for a Metroid game - way too linear and formulaic. Access to a small area of the map, get chased by a robot, fight boss, repeat. If they were going for something different, then fine - I just didn't dig it. But my expectations for an actual Metroid game is almost the opposite of what this game was.

Good graphics and sound though.
