LTTP: Hyperion by Dan Simmons

This topic has me so conflicted on pursuing the rest of the series, usually we can reach a consensus but it seems unlikely...

I'm so enraptured by the first I intend to read the remaining three.

Article:
Dan Simmons, 77, award-winning author of 31 novels and short story collections, passed away on February 21, 2026 in Longmont, Colorado. Many of his books won honors ranging from the Hugo Award, science fiction's most prestigious award, to two World Fantasy Awards, three Bram Stoker Awards for horror, a dozen Locus Awards, and the Shirley Jackson Award. His titles have been translated into at least 20 languages and published in 28 foreign countries.

Simmons defied literary norms by writing across genres and defying pressure to conform to formulaic novels. He wrote groundbreaking work in historical fiction, horror, hard-boiled crime, and speculative fiction and explored topics ranging from Ernest Hemingway's World War II Cuban spy ring to mountain climbing in the Himalayas. In 2018, his novel The Terror (2007) was adapted as a ten-part AMC series.

Daniel Joseph Simmons was born April 4, 1948 in Peoria, Illinois. Many of his childhood experiences found their way into his horror fiction. He graduated from Wabash College with an English degree and earned a graduate degree in education from Washington University in St. Louis.

He taught sixth grade until his debut novel, Song of Kali, won the 1986 World Fantasy Award. In 1987 he left teaching to become a full-time author, launching an illustrious career that included the Hyperion Quartet, Carrion Comfort, Summer of Night, Ilium, and Olympos. Of all his awards, the most meaningful was an honorary doctorate from Wabash College, a place that changed his life and set him on a path towards a life well lived.

He is survived by his wife Karen, daughter Jane, and grandchildren Milo and Lucia Glenn.

Sad to hear.

Hyperion was fantastic (Endymion OK but first two best).
Have also enjoyed Illium/Olympos.
Have a bunch of others in the book backlog.

Most of what I read is by dead authors now.

I read the first book and it had about 1/4 that was excellent. With the priest. The rest was incredibly annyoing and boring. I'm not really sure why it's so hyped when so much of it is a slog to get through.

Gut wrenching. The full Hyperion Cantos was a formative read. It exposed me to ideas and topics that became a strong part of who I am. It's depiction of catholicism is the most interesting in fiction. I still re-read it every other year.

The Shrike was existential dread

Yeah Hyperion and Canticle for Leibowitz is another book that combined catholicism with scifi strangely well

WTF? The Priests tale is amazing, Genuine horror, but the rest is also fantastic. The poets tale builds the actual world of Hyperion and gives context to the history of the planet, The Scholars tale is heart breaking and gives more mystery of the time tombs and the Consul's tale is a study of a tragic love and the effects of time dealation. Boring?
Get the fuck out of here!
That's excessive! Sorry. Hyperion is my Dune, and I don't even like Dune that much! I think Hyperion needs to be filmed though. It would be interesting. You could see a sea of grass, the battle of Agincourt, a terminator made of thorns, space battles, a spaceship that is actually a thousand feet tree, body horror, cosmic horror, a statement on the horror of A.I. heart-breaking love and a whole lot more. It's not boring man.

Hell yeah Hyperion > Dune. For anyone who hasn't read Hyperion, this, this right here is why you should read it.

I really hope they can honor Dan Simmons in the way he would have wanted - by making a movie adaptation of Hyperion starring Jack Black as Chubby Shrike.
