It's free right now on PSN so I decided to grab and wow, for a suda51 game (god bless that wonderful man) this might be his jankiest work yet and that is saying something.

Combat is really boring to the point where it's boderline dull, and the performance of the game is simply horrid. framerate drops errywhere.
The comic book effect they are trying to achieve just makes the game look more ugly.
The jokes however (the ones I can understand with my potato tier Japanese) is pretty nice however.

This seems like a fairly short game, so I'll finish it. But it's not something I'd rec to others.

What are your thoughts on this game?

Some good silly, mindless fun. If it makes you laugh consistently, good!
If not then you probably don't know why you're playing it.

I enjoyed it for what it was.

It's free on PSN?

PS+ Japan unless another region has it too.

EDIT: Free PS+ JP Stuff right now.

Part of the problem is Suda hasn't been hands on since Killer 7, and the other part is Suda doesn't really care what comes out of Grasshopper anymore (see Killer is Dead)

If it's free I'm downloading it tho lol

Killer is Dead is one of the best games with the Suda name slapped on it

Played it on 360 launch day. It was ok...it was pretty poor as far as other action games go, but it had more enjoyable combat that no more heroes atleast...you cant play that with a controller like PS3

I enjoyed it, especially after how terrible No More Heroes 2 was. I can also note that James Gunn wrote it, not Suda (cheer or jeer as you will).

I thought it was pretty boring till I bought about 4-5 more moves, so I think the really limited move set in the beginning doesn't help too much with impressions.

It's that bad? I had wanted it to come out on PC, but maybe just having Killer is Dead will do.

I like the style, history and dialogues. Combat not that great but ok. Suda51 games are perfect for PSN+. A lot of people never played and are fun games.

The game had a lot personality. I felt it more than made up for its deficiencies. It's a B-tier game so my expectations weren't high and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed myself.

I really liked it. Mechanically it was Grasshopper's best game at the time. It's still way below other character action games, but it gets the job done. I'm actually surprised that we haven't seen a sequel since it's by far the most successful Grasshopper game ever made.

Didn't like it. Borrrring combat. Beat it and traded it right back so thankfully I didn't lose any money. Confirmed my growing belief that Suda51 is OVerRated!

Wait what.
What I said is neither strange nor an unpopular opinion. There were some improvements mechanically (the Darkside Reels aside, transforming into a tiger having gotten old really fast compared to the old Gray Fox version of that one). However, the vast majority of the ranked assassins were a major downgrade, with Margaret and Alice being among the only exceptions. The opportunity to play as Shinobu was nice, but the platforming segments were terrible. Getting only one boss fight, not even a full mission, as Henry was disappointing. The simplified, menu-based map was also unfortunate. Some of the retro-style job mini-games were okay, but it was weird how that terrible scorpion catching game from the original was left exactly the same. The alternate clothing options were also much worse, with there not being much incentive to go with anything other than the default look or the throwback to Travis' NMH1 look. And I won't even get started on how godawful the final boss was.

The presentation of the game was a major step back, with little things like the Wiimote phone calls and how the boss stages were introduced in the first game sorely missed. The tone of the story was also completely different, and just felt completely off compared to the original (it was just downright unpleasant more often than not). There were some standout tracks here and there, but the music in general was not as good without Masafumi Takada.

NMH2 marked the beginning of where Suda stopped directing games himself, and it showed.

Could be better for you since you have the digital version (I wouldn't know). The load times for the retail version aren't all that great, and there's no option to install either.

I had a blast with this game. It's absurd, fun, has awesome/creative bosses. It's rough around the edges in that B-movie kind of way, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The combat isn't Ninja Gaiden precision, but it doesn't try to be and doesn't need to be for what it is, which is something no game on the market offers.

The jokes however (the ones I can understand with my potato tier Japanese) is pretty nice however.

Unless something is specifically different with the PS+ version, you should be able to change the text and language to English.

It was a fun little game. I rented it for a few days for a couple of bucks, back when it was new, and enjoyed it. It wasn't great, though.

No More Heroes is still his best game. For some reason, I didn't like No More Heroes 2 as much as its predecessor.

The only thing I liked about the game was the soundtrack and the sense of humor.

Bought it for like $20 and gave up after a few hours, couldn't force myself to play it, no big loss.

I enjoyed Lollipop Chainsaw, although I can't argue with your comment on the combat's weakness, OP. This game made me realize that the Wii remote gestures made the combat system in No More Heroes 1 and 2. Without those visceral movements, the combat just feels dull and repetitive.

I think it's the weakest Suda51 game (combat was a bore to me and levels felt like they were too long)

Have you played Killer Is Dead yet? I'm working my way through that one and it feels much weaker than Lollipop Chainsaw.

I was gonna buy this on multiple occasions but ended up confused as hell over which version came with the Ash skin (AIN'T BUYING IT WITHOUT THAT SON). If it comes to PC with all of the dlc then I will buy it.

I like this game, but you're pretty much on point with everything you've said. It's my style over substance guilty pleasure game.

I thought it was fun. Combat is no Bayonetta, but it gets better once you unlock enough moves.

I agree.
NMH is one of the very few games where I enjoy the waggle mote.
