Lttp: pc gaming. What do I turn on and off in AMD drivers?

I moved over to pc gaming last year and it's been great for the most part. One thing I don't get or understand are the drivers. There are a million different settings and functions that seem to be named with marketing more in mind than function.

Can someone help me determine what I should turn on and off?

My pc specs are as follows if that matters:

5800x3d
32 gigs of ddr3-3200
AMD 6800
A gigabyte motherboard

I play on a 144 hz tv with a wireless Xbox controller if that has any impact as well.

Doesn't matter, I'm used to loneliness.
Also i have an Nvidiot card so i can't help u.

There really isn't much to change out of the box in the AMD control panel, on Windows 11 VRR is now a Windows display setting. Most of the features in the AMD control panel are typically for overriding something not present inside the game itself (like AMD upscale or frame gen).

The one change as a set it and forget it is;
* In AMD control set wait for vertical refresh rate to always on
* In AMD control set MAX FPS to 141 (3 frame below max refresh rate to allow for fluctuation)
* In games set vsync to off and disable any frame rate cap.

This gives you the optimal VRR experience that also avoids the input lag caused by vsync. You can choose to do it per game but the global method is just more lazy/easy.

AMD drivers have a useful search function, that allows to quickly find any setting.
Turn on Adaptive Sync and Always Wait for Vertical refresh. This is, if you have a VRR tv or monitor.

You you need to clamp to SRGB, you can turn on Custom Color and then turn off Color temperature control. This will make the display be color accurate to the SRGB space.

Undervolting, be it on Nvidia or AMD GPUS, is always a good idea. On the AMD drivers, it's under the Tunning options.
Here is a guide.

If you need any specific setting, just ask.

I laughed too. Trust your instincts and never give up.

Most settings aren't worth messing around with unless you know what you're doing. Even then, there usually isn't much point unless you're trying to solve a specific problem.

I'd just make sure that it's set to 144hz output and VRR is enabled if you haven't. You might also want to enable Vsync since latency won't be an issue at 144hz with a gamepad.

The only other thing I can think of is since you're using a TV instead of a monitor. Last I knew, AMD outputs at full dynamic range over HDMI which can cause black crush in SDR if the TV expects a limited range signal. This has no effect in HDR but could be worth looking into if SDR looks too dark on your system.

That was quite the journey.

At last someone who I can relate to.

You don't have to change anything, you can turn on VSR if you want, but the default settings take care of everything; if you have are running multiple screens and you are having random green/black screen issues, you might want to turn off freesync on the second screen.

Edit: radeon chill is pretty cool, it's a good idea to set it up with a min/max fps (mine is at 60/60) so you can just enable-disable it with the shortcut.

Make sure your refresh rate is at 144hz in Windows Settings -> System -> DIsplay -> Advanced Display
Enable Freesync by opening Adrenaline, click on home, then search for "Display", click on "display settings" and see if Freesync is enabled.
Enable re-size bar in your bios so AMD Smart Access Memory will be enabled
I dont do anything special in my Adrenaline settings, i usually leave AFMF and Super Resolution on by default. And adjust settings per game by pressing Alt+R.
