Curious to see what OS people are using on their handhelds as more gaming distros keep popping up. I currently have a steam deck, with Cachy OS there are some minor performance increases, but Bazzite has tdp controls. Steam OS seems to be the most easy to use and has the best support right now.

Steam OS

Steam OS. Has everything I need.

I do have Cachy OS on my desktop and it is pretty great. I've used Bazzite and it is solid.

Steam OS, but I could see after there is more maturity with handhelds running some of the other Linux gaming distros like CachyOS that aren't immutable, and have access to more apps.

Don't have a handheld, but if/when I do get the handheld, it would be Xbox Ally X on a sale, with the Windows/Xbox OS.

I would consider a PS6 handheld if it's much cheaper, and has a browser function to stream from other services.

Windows, I play games like EAFC onit that dont work on Steam due to the anticheat stuff. Hopefully steam will iron out issues like that with the devs and it will be intresting to see how Windows develops there gaming mode.

SteamDeck and the Steam OS.
I also occasionally boot into Windows 11 off the sd card for Gamepass games.
With any luck Microsoft got its butt in gear with this new gaming OS with the horrible name. Waiting on real hands on reviews of the ROG xbox Ally handheld to see how it really works or not.

I've been considering giving CachyOS a try on my regular, non-gaming PC. Been a Mint user for years, mostly for the "it just works" factor. But its slow to implement new features and Cachy seems to be generating a lot of interest. How is it in terms of general, everyday use for you?

Default on my SD, but I've still had to use the terminal for a few things, and I despise doing so. It felt like an ancient chore twenty years ago, and it's worse today.

The only reason I'll never move to Linux on my PC.

If I want that experience, I'll build a retro DOS machine.

Looking for that Lenovo Legion Go z1 extreme model with steam os to upgrade my sdoled if Valve are playing valve time with the next deck. Its the only other handheld that captures my attention.

Steam os is the best gaming os since peak ps4 days.

Currently on my Steam Deck it's Steam OS but once I buy the Xbox Ally X it will be Bazzite

I'm fairly new to Cachy but I do like that it has updates implemented fairly quickly, especially for gaming. For general use, it is fine but not as polished/stable as Mint from what I've seen. That's generally the case though for Arch distros in my experience since they are quicker to implement updates.

Thanks for the reply. Think I'm going to take a look at it over the next few weeks. Figuring to try it out on my regular desktop and if I like it I'll see if I can get my gaming rig sorted with it too. I've been trying to get away from windows for ages and I'm nearly ready to cut the cord. Just need a relaitively plug-and-play distro and steamOS isn;t going to be suitable for Nvidia for a while yet.

I dual boot CachyOS with Windows on my gaming pc. I saw a notable performance increase in CachyOS, especially in UE5 games. CachyOS also allows Steam to see games on NTFS drives. So i can hop between OSes and not have to mess with my library. I didnt have to do anything to start playing games.

CachyOS has been my go-to linux distribution for a while now and I am quite happy with it. I was a Fedora SIlverblue and Debian guy before and never really worked with Arch since I was always a bit skeptical of the rolling release model, worried about an update fucking up my shit. But when you use btrfs and snapper so you can roll back shit, it isn't really an issue anymore.

Do you have an nvidia or amd gpu?

Yeah, I have a 9070 XT. Big reason I got it was for better Linux support and to get away from Windows.

I'm still making the most of my 2080S. But I'm looking at AMD for sure next time for the same reason. And hopefully it'll have some sanity in its pricing as a bonus!
