LTTP: PS2

So, I was a GCN only owner last gen, because I was a poor teenager who could only afford one console. No big deal. But now I've got money I decided to pick up a PS2 and get some cheap games.

Anyways, I got it today. I went and picked up Ratchet and Clank 2, and Kingdom Hearts 2 (I'll get to that later).

First time I've ever played R&C. First impressions were iffy. That first level where you're just running down corridors sucks. Also, the camera isn't the best. But I got onto the first planet thing now, and it's pretty good. More platforming. I think I'll enjoy it, and for $12.50, I can't go wrong anyway.

Now, about Kingdom Hearts 2: I thought I was buying Kingdom Hearts 1. How the hell are you supposed to know that those two small swords in the heart represent a sequel? Not me, since I'm a retard. Now, should I go return it and get the original, or is it not worth it and just play number 2?

Also, give me some more recommendations. I'm planning on getting DMC. Which Jak is the best?

It came with a Swap Magic thing too, so I can get imports. The guy I bought the system from chucked it in with a US version of Okami, but I can't get it to work. The little thing I'm supposed to put into it to make it think it's closed keeps popping out. It's a slim, by the way.

So, yeah.

This question will bring up so many divided opinions it goes right past funny and into annoying. Just play the three main Jak games, and ignore what anyone else says because you're going to get so many conflicted freakin' opinions.

Which is stupid, as they're all great.

Kingdom Hearts 1 is awesome, (although some hated it) i'd definitely recommend picking it up since it can be found relatively cheap.

Jak 1 is the most traditional in the platforming sense. Jak 2 takes on a much darker tone and in a way kind of goes in the way of a sandbox game. Jak 3 blends elements of both games and finishes up the trilogy in a nice way. Most people hated 2(and I can see why because of the difficulty) but I enjoyed all 3. I personally liked Jak 3 the best since it took away some of the annoying points from 2.

Other recommendations

Katamari Damacy
Final Fantasy X
Ico
Dragon Quest 8
Metal Gear Solid 2/3

Definitely return it and get number one. I think we're all in agreement here that the ordinal is far better. You'd be lost by starting with 2 anyways.

I also forgot to recommend Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmaria. If you like JRPGs you will buy this... not that it plays like a conventional RPG. It's beautifully turn-based and strategic but at the same time feels real-time and action-packed, with some of the most incredible graphics the PS2 has been host to.

Final Fantasy XII is also another one, though so many GAFers whine about it you may be deterred from playing it. Really fantastic, beautiful game which can be hit or miss in the gameplay and story for people, but you should try it out for yourself.

You poor soul!

As it is a greatest hits title now Shadow of the Colossus should be readily available.

Maybe get one of the GTA games if you haven't tried them.

Stick to just a few games at a time so you get the most for your money. I'd think that you won't end up playing it as much as someone who got one in it's prime.

If you like platformers the Sly Cooper games are the best you can get in the genre aside from the Mario games. True masterpieces of the genre.

God of War 1&2 for awesome action games with some of the best presentation you'll see in videogames. The Mark of Kri for a good innovative action game(you can avoid the sequel since it has retarded AI).

Shadow of the Colossus and Ico if you believe in games as an art form.

Ok, cool. I'll do it tomorrow.

I don't usually like JRPGs, so I'll probably skip the Final Fantasy's. Long cutscenes turn me off. The only reason I got KH was because I like Disney and it's not turn based. Also, someone else I know who doesn't like JRPGs told me he liked it, so I picked it up. Plus, I couldn't find anything else decent in the store.

I may pick up the MGS Collection if I can get this Swap Magic thing working, cause I don't think they did a PAL release. Although I know I'll hate it, because of the aforementioned allergy to cutscenes.

...... wow

Should definitely play Kingdom Hearts 1 first.

Final Fantasy X, X-2
Dark Cloud 2
Breath of Fire V
Atelier Iris 1 and 3
Dragon Quest VIII
Tales of Abyss
Radiata Stories

Yeah I've always been turned off by JRPGs, but KH is fantastic. Top 5 game all-time for me. I'm a semi-Disney buff too so that helped. Two I thought sucked though, unfortunately.

Somebody brought up Downhill Domination in a thread the other day and I got all warm and fuzzy. Its basically SSX on mountain bikes (with tighter controls and cooler maps), if you can find it don't blink. Also check out War of the Monsters. Incognito absolutely rocked last gen (sad to see them break up. :( )

lol i know i'm a loser right what with my different taste in games and such. i mean why would someone who usually doesn't like really story heavy games with long cutscenes NOT like MSG, lolololol.

I DO want to get Tales of the Abyss though, because Tales of Symphonia is one of the only JRPGs I've really liked.

Wow what timing for this thread. As of three days ago, I'm the fresh new owner of a new silver slimline PS2. Picked up MGS3, SotC, and Ico. I wanted MGS3 Subsistence but it's seeming impossible to find, which is strange, cause a few months ago I saw copies everywhere.

I've only been playing MGS3 so far (enjoying more than I expected). SotC and Ico will get playtime.

I'm still on the lookout for PS2 games I should catch-up on.

Must Buys:

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
Gitaroo Man
Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King (aka DQ8 in the US)
Final Fantasy X
Okami
Sly Racoon

You just contradicted yourself fella.

please buy the following games:

psychonauts
beyond good & evil
katamari damacy
ape escape 3
Jack & Daxter 1

P.S. Ico, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, and shadow of the Colossus are overrated.

You basically just described every level in every game in the series. Pick up Jak 2 if you want a platformer with good level design.

When in doubt, check the spine. Usually helps out! Can't really add to the recommendations since the only non rpg's I have for the system are Capcom Classics Collection, Resident Evil Code Veronica X, Silent Hill 2, and SF Anniversary (along with MGS2/3 but you were going to get those possibly anyway).

I think the "wow" more stems from the fact that you're going to buy a game that you hate. I wish I had money to piss away like that, and presumably the free time to play games which I don't even like.

Anyway. PS2 = best system ever, especially since you can play all region's games.

Shooters? Espgaluda. Dodonpachi Daiojou.
Fighters? SF3 3rd. KOF98.
Music games? Everything that's out there, minus DL content.
RPGs? DQ8, VP2, and a bunch of other crap.
Puzzle? Xi Go, Otostaz, and Fantavision.

I edit my thread before copying the block to paste as the reply.

Usually I take the time to edit the new addition out.

Too late for this one I guess.

I bought a PS2 after getting a 360 and Wii, and it is my most played console this gen. Amazing how many great games exist for such a droll piece of hardware.

Sweet mother of God that was confusing I kept on clicking on the link and had like 20+ tabs open before I realized it was a loop.

(was that funny?)

Also how could I forget Zone of the Enders 2. Directed by Hideo Kojima it's a great shooter.

You know it says right there on the boxart you posted, right? "Produced by Hideo Kojima" :P

the browser chokes and prints buy
god hand.

I've played pretty much every PS2 game of note, with the exception of RPGs. These are some of my favourites:

Resident Evil 4
Gran Turismo 4
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time
The Grand Theft Auto games
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
Devil May Cry 3
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Beyond Good & Evil
NHL Hitz Pro

Personally, I enjoyed the MGS and God of War games but found them to be not quite as good as advertised. IMHO, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are not overrated, they are fairly unique gaming experiences.

The original Jak and Daxter is far better than Jak 2. It feels like a better sequel to the original Banjo-Kazooie than Banjo-Tooie. I never played Jak 3.

Other games worth playing: Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Klonoa 2, God of War games, the first Sly Cooper game, Ape Escape 2, Katamari, and SSX3 if you haven't played it. I'm sure there are others, but those are the very best I can think off the top of my head.

Jak 3 is one of the most technically stunning games on PS3 if you ask me. I haven't finished it though so can't comment on the storyline, etc. But visually it is one of the most impressive PS2 games I've played.

Just a few recommendations
Devil May Cry 1 and 3SE. They are both two different games in a sense of gameplay. DMC3 is heavy on combo based action and such, while 1 is what more like Castlevania 3D.
Zone of the Enders 2, 2nd runner. Best looking game by far. And one of the best on the system
Prince of Persia Sands of Time, Awesome game

I already own Psychonauts on the PC and BG&E on the GCN.

The thing about the MGS Collection is that it's only like $35 on playasia. That's AUD, which is a bargain. Sort of a morbid curiosity thing. Anyways, I have to go to work, I'll get back to this thread later. Thanks for the recommendations.
