LTTP: Sackboy – Awful

Littlebigplanet is and was always shit.

I never saw the appeal. Sackboy doesn't look appealing, maybe its the black eyes.. idk. But he failed to resonate the way Sony wanted. As for the games, they all control like absolute dogshit. And why would you want to play some copycat Mario levels in this game, with these controls? Go play Mario instead. Much better. Rayman Origins or Legends, much better on PS3/4. Astro Bot, much better than Sackboy on PS5.

I played this couch-coop with my GF and had a blast. She sucked at the Knitted Knight Trials and always asked me to get gold on my own before we went back to the regular levels though. I don't understand the simultaneous complaints about floaty controls and high difficulty though. The "floatiness" makes it more forgiving since you can literally change your jump direction in the air while "floating". Coming from astrobot the slower pace might throw you off or not be to somebody's taste but what exactly is the complaint with "floaty" and difficulty?

What could make it more difficult for some is the opposite of the OPs complaint about momentum. There is too much momentum in the game and inertia stops you from making quick changes in direction, unlike astrobot.

Yeah hard disagree on this OP!

It's to Mario 3D World what Astrobot is to Mario Galaxy. Neither ever reach that Nintendo level of excellence but they are both very well 'crafted' games. You could argue it's a little on the easy side and mechanically simple, but it's also creative, aesthetically pleasing with great art direction, and is good fun, especially in co-op (although you have to have friends for that OP).

I really enjoyed my time with it at launch and would recommend it to platform fans. For those that haven't tried it, ignore the OP. It's a solid little platformer.

Agree OP. For a kids game, I always felt it was too dark in colour. Like the main character is brown. The levels are all generally dark. Dark colours used a lot etc. Like visually it’s not that appealing to me.
Astro is the complete opposite.

I loved it, felt similar to Mario 3d World in gameplay and quality. I played a lot of it in coop mode though so that helped with the fun factor.

I didn't love it but I do agree and I hear this a lot. I feel like I robbed myself a bit by not doing co-op because a lot of people make the 3D world comparison. Maybe I'll dig it back out one day.

FYI everyone ITT, KNACK Futari no Eiyuu to Kodai Heidan is the absolute GOAT co-op platformer.

BTW, I think people are assuming that SABA has those same terrible floaty controls of LBP. It doesn't, SABA plays just fine.

I thought all 3 of the Little Big Planet games were "Meh" as hell, and when I finally played Sackboy a year or two ago I thought it failed to live up to the "meh" of the LBP games. I was actually upset I wasted the hours I did on the game. I hope to never see another Sackboy game. Character with no charm thrown into a lifeless platform game. Kill it with fire and never bring it back

Sackboy is one of the most customizable characters out there and gameplay wise this adventure plays remarkably well.

You know another thing I really HATE about this game? The trail levels don't properly reset between each attempt, so there's no consistency. Every time the timing is a bit different. That's just terrible game design.

(I'm now on the final trial, where this becomes absolutely infuriating.)

Kid platformers just shouldn't exist in 2024, it belongs to the 90s. Just make a Mario detective neo noir game with realistic art style or some shit Nintendo, so we can bury this shit genre once for all ffs.

Do you know there are actual kids there out in the wilds?

And there are a lot of adults who still able to have pure fun playing games.

I’ve only played the Ps4 version, but yeah, it’s nothing special. I still had a pretty good time with it, but agree on the controls unfortunately. It’s nothing I’d replay.

I officially give up on fully beating this game.

I love a tight, challenging platformer, but this game isn't tight. The challenge in this game never feels satisfying, only frustrating. And that's mainly due to the unresponsive controls, or rather the fact that Sackboy has zero forward momentum. It constantly feels like you're running through molasses, always having to fight the controls to get anywhere with any sort of speed. The platforming just isn't fun, so I want to get through it as quickly as possible, but the controls don't allow for that.

Edit: Hit detection is also just terrible. You'll land on top of an enemy but the game will count it as a side hit and you die. So much about this game just feels so bad. No idea why I've played this far really, I'm just stubborn I guess. I stopped having fun after the first world or so.

Overall, I'd give this game a 6/10. It has its charm, and some fun ideas, but it just feels so bad to play.

Sackboy is far from a bad game, but it will look bad in comparison to Astro Bot. If you enjoyed Astro Bot, then the only way you will scratch that itch is to play Mario Wonder or hell, get a Wii and play the Mario Galaxy games. They are even better. I love platformers so I always have the latest Nintendo console. I can't understand why anyone who likes these games doesn't just get a Switch.

I do own a Switch (and a Wii) and have played every 3D Mario except 3D Land. And yeah, they're brilliant, the Galaxy games in particular. Those are what Astro felt closest to.

Haven't played Wonder though, I've heard some very conflicting opinions about that. Some think it's fantastic, others think it's very mid.

If it's anything like Little Big Planet I'll pass. Horrendous controls, barely feels like you're controlling a character.

This game was good. Even if it's not your cup of tea, it's far from awful. It was a fun game. Good music too

Playing it casually it's fine (even though I think it gets boring because the platforming just isn't very engaging), but once you want to do the more difficult stuff it becomes a struggle.

I remember playing it a bit and dropping it. Didn't felt it was awful, but to be fair the game didn't grabbed my attention so I just moved on to play something else lol

It was fun when it launched, although it was also frustrating at times and I eventually never finished it. OP:s biggest problem is probably playing Sackboy after Astro Bot. Most platformers feel underwhelming compared to Team Asobi's masterpiece.

This game was a lot of fun and it's a far cry from being awful. It was even better playing it with kids in coop mode. Eventually I ended up getting a platinum for it.

There's really only one hard level and that's the final challenge. Which you don't even need to do to actually finish the game.

Yeah, I did beat everything except that one. Well, I didn't open the gate in the post-game world, couldn't be arsed to go back and get more blue balls. So I guess I missed a few levels there too.
