LTTP: Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed [PC]

MK8's straight up better than the Wii U version of SART. I can post up some 60fps comparison vids if people like, but I don't think there's really much point. The few advantages SART have are gamepad related really (like one player on each screen).

MK8 vs. SART PC is a different story, and will probably be a matter of personal preference for most people. 720p/60fps vs. 1080p/60fps/AA, they both have great performance and visuals. MK8 is cleaner and brighter, while SART does some great stuff with things like water and creating a sense of speed. I don't think there's a winner here, they both achieve some really fantastic and different stuff.

I've been playing MK8 for a while and I have to say that this game is significantly better when it comes to the single player mode. Sumo Digital really outdid themselves.

Loved this game. It is indeed difficult, which I really appreciated.

Transforming stages is another thing that was pretty rad. While I can appreciate Mario Kart, this game has been better than all Mario Karts IMO.

I dunno about that. The in-game AA looks terrible (I'm guessing FXAA), and the graphics get corrupted if you try to force AA in other ways.

Looks gorgeous on my 40 inch Sony TV. Zero jaggies at all at 1080p at about 7-8ft seating distance. It just looks super clean and super bright.

Not surprising considering the native resolution of SART on the WiiU is 1024x576 and it runs at 30fps.

It's pretty good, but to be honest I'm not really a fan of the whole "Transformed" gimmick. Boat sections are just like car sections but with worse controls, and flying sections don't have much depth beyond pointing your plane towards the next booster.

Still, it's good fun.

Flying sections also have risk boosts where you get an instant boost if you approach an obstacle and roll away at the last moment.

Just for some perspective here, when it comes to LttPs of Sonic and All-Stars Racing: Transformed, we've already had six of them. Hell, the last two were made this month. We've had three LttP threads on the same subject in May 2014 alone.

Following trends, we will soon be having an LttP thread for this game every single day. I like the game and all, but I'm wondering when it hits the point where it's too much.

This is such a big secret. Does it ever say this in game? I had no idea and I've played a good deal of the game. I've probably even done it by accident, lol. What color boost does it give?

On PC is the only way I can play this game. I absolutely hated it when I first encountered it as a demo on the 3DS (granted, this was the worst way to see it for the first time). The demo on the Vita didn't change my mind on it, and neither did the demo on the Wii U.

Bought it on sale on Steam on a whim, and fell in love. Looks glorious downsampled from 1800p on my 1080p monitor at 60 FPS. I'm getting MK8 this week, and I can only hope it scratches that same itch. I'm sure the two can coexist-- Sonic Kart is an arcade racer with items, whereas Mario Kart is, well, Mario Kart.

But yes, the physics are garbage. Heaven help you if you make a mistake in the water bits.

Yep, Im playing Mario Kart 8 since yesterday, and while that game is good, I feel it will be very hard for it to top the fantastic singleplayer, levels and overall driving feel of this game. One of the best games of the last few years for sure.

I actually did do a search before making this thread, and found the last thread to be from two months backs.

Hey, if this game is getting a lot of LTTPs, that means it is probably doing great on PC. Really hope we see a sequel.

Also, I don't see a problem for a game to get an LTTP every month really. At least, that's my opinion.

I'm not very familiar with Sega characters and srttings myself, but I do agree the game is fantastic and arguably the best of its genre. The only downside is I wish they created far more DLC tracks as I've played the existing ones so much I'm getting bored of them.

I do think MK8 looks lush but in terms of image quality, SART rules. 1080p at 60fps with AA. Looks super lush.
Bah, downsampled from 4K at 60 FPS with 16xAF on an IPS panel FTW. :P The game really does look amazing like that.

Yep, this game is still awesome even with MK8 bursting into the scene. I'll come back to this game more once I have a more robust PC though (running it on a laptop is ok, but I want more)

Not sure why this matters; at all.

My only critisism is you can't dump a unwanted power up. The turbo power up can fuck you up when it wears off.

With the turbo you're supposed to hit the item button again before it runs out to set off an explosion around you.

This game isn't good at explaining things.

lol something that could being brought to my attention yesterday. It took me ages how to edit: I mean flip in air. Game doesn't even have a tutorial.

Hmm. I don't agree at all. Playing Mario Kart, I've just been impressed by how much better it looks than Sonic. And yes, I played Sonic on the PC.

Had you played the ghost mode?

There, you will realize that planes had a lot of depth if you want to win a race. boats too but not as much

I love the announcer. He is your typical awesome arade type announcer. This style is also present in SF Alpha 3, and Capcom Vs SNK 2.

I love the announcer too, actually. It's honestly part of why I like the game. The announcer makes the game feel more... gamey, if that makes sense.

Really? In Sonic items do feel weaker, and that's a good thing. No item is a guarantee to kill you, the homing attacks can be dodged with a well timed drift boost) and things like rocket/snowball require skill to hit. It feels very fair and balanced to me. Everything has multiple uses, while nothing is overpowered. Item distribution is good too, you tend to get more defensively oriented options when in first.

In MK8, enemies tend to just get blue + red shells in the final lap while you get coins and you're basically fucked. Sonic can get rough but always gives you a chance. If MK8 replaced the coin powerup with Sonic's glove I'd be so much happier.

I wouldn't be surprised if MK8 is more annoying than older Mario Kart games, because 1) you can't drag an item behind you while having a 2nd item in reserve, and 2) there are coins as items for some odd reason... However, I haven't played MK8 yet, so my comparison to Sonic is with older MK games.

I think I find Sonic's items more annoying than Mario Kart's because they're much poorer at defense. You can't defend yourself by dragging an item behind you, which allows you to get hit more. Plus, most of the items that attack you move so fast that you have little time to send an item out behind you for defense. The only way I can be almost immune to items when playing Sonic is by moving far ahead in first place. Otherwise, I could be hit by an item, potentially leading me to get hit by other items that would send me back. (Plus, since the items aren't as powerful, getting back to first isn't exactly easy...)

I don't mind too much that Sonic's items feel more useless for attacking. (That's actually not entirely true, considering the fast items like the sniper snowballs, lol). However, I really dislike that they are more useless for defense.

I have a hard time comparing Mario Kart and Sonic Transformed. They both have their ups and downs and feel extremely different so I can take them as their own things but I do think that Sonic was a more rounded package with more progressive ideas. Also, props for actually using the transformation mechanic as an actual... well, mechanic. In Mario Kart I was a little annoyed how gliding and diving were largely aesthetics. Unsure how big of a deal anti-grav is in MK8, not buying it until next week, but we'll see.

That PC version of Sonic is solid gold though. Looks gorgeous, runs like butter and optimized to the point where it can probably do it all on a microwave display. I can't fault Mario Kart 8 for not being 1080p but at 720 with no anti aliasing it's going to look fairly rough on my display.

I know exactly what you mean. Like another mentioned, it adds to the atmosphere of the game. Also, I find items in this game better than MK, because they do not send you back behind a lot, and are more like tiny inconveniences. Except for the Tornado, that is the worst.

Anti-Gravity is somewhat aesthetics as well. The benefit of going anti gravity is getting boost off of other players, as well as tiny boosters in the stage. Other than that, it is like normal kart driving.

EDIT: If I want to play online, is there a community of some sorts? The online is dead when I tried it.

I've honestly never even tried to take it online, the game is so fleshed out and elaborate in it's offline play that I've never really felt compelled to, I guess.

Mario Kart is where I go for online dabbling, it's a solid package online but considering it's offline component is still the same bare bones shit it's been since the 90s you don't really have a choice, sadly. I'd love to see a really good, elaborate single player weaved out for a MK title, some day. I put a lot of time into MK7 and it'd be frightful what I could have gotten out of it if I wasn't just doing online pick-up races.

It's sad, because the Sonic racing games got their single-player content from the modes that Mario Kart DS came with. Of course, in Nintendo's never-ending mission in making sequels with less content than their predecessors, no longer has Mission Modes and etc. in their games.

MK DS was the one entry into the franchise I skipped, so I didn't even know that. That's a real shame.

tbh doe, I just replayed all of the missions in MKDS earlier this week and found them kind of assy compared to what's in SASRT.

One of the best kart racing games of all time.

I had played the demo of the original with some friends and we all loved it. & playing it reminded me that the sequel was gonna come out later that year. I got it as a Christmas gift and loved every second of it. A lot of my friends prefer Mario Kart to it, but imo it's a lot more fun than the Mario Kart games I've played (way better than Double Dash anyway lol)

One of the best Mario kart clones, up there with Diddy kong racing and Crash Team racing.

It's got good Track variety but terrible character choices compared to its prequel.
