So my friend is moving into an apartment and in turn giving away all of his stuff. One piece of that, his Xbox and 4 conttollers, is going to go to me. Only problem is that I will be starting at 0 games for it. Help me build my collection, I really have no idea what to buy other than maybe Halo. I also need to know some places that actually still sell games for the system.

ODDWORLD - STRANGERS WRATH.
Beyond Good & Evil
Crimson Skies
Street Fighter 3 - 3rd Strike (And the VS games)
Indigo Prophecy
Project Gotham Racing 2
Ninja Gaiden
Psychonauts
Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow

You can get xbox games cheap pretty much anywhere.

Ninja Gaiden Black
Otogi 1 and 2
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Halo 1 and 2
Jet Set Radio Future
Dead of Alive 3 and Beach Volley Ball

Also, the superior versions of multiplatforms games--Prince of Persia games, etc.

And Xbox Live is still 50 bucks a year, correct? Seems a bit expensive given my situation. What are my options for playing online games for free? Anything?

Yup. You're only forgetting Panzer Dragoon Orta, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, PIRATES!, Jet Set Radio Future, Otogi 1 & 2

I bought a xbox last year and made a nice list of games i will buy, too bad it's on my work pc. I'll try to remember to post the list here tomorrow.

I didn't get many games for the Xbox but what I did get, I thoroughly enjoyed:

Halo & Halo 2
Splinter Cell
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (that's if you didn't already play it on the PS2)
Project Gotham Racing (it was a meh game, but getting the gold medals was pretty fun and challenging)

the best game on the system is knights of the old republic

and buy amped 2 for great justice

there were some tunnelling applications via gamespy and xbox connect. i've only used xbox connect with halo 1, and it was a slideshow. no idea if either service (or any other) is still active.

This was definitly at the top of my list. Would you recommend starting with the first one?

By the way, how long do the Halos take to complete? I got a backlog as it is, but am definitly still interested in playing through these.

Knights of the Old Republic (if you like it, get KOTOR2 - just be aware its a very unfinished game).
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (don't worry about the other two)
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Jet Set Radio Future
Psychonauts
Ninja Gaiden Black
Crimson Skies
Prince of Persia; Sands of Time
Oddworld Strangers Wrath
Beyond Good and Evil
Both Otagi games

That should do you very nicely.

Yes, start with the first one. Like I said, play the 2nd one if you enjoy the first, but be aware that it's very buggy and unfinished, though it's still good.

As for Halo, their single-player campaigns are of decent length, i would say 5-10 hours probably. Honestly though, only the first one has a decent campaign.

About 10-12 hours each. 10-12 of the best hours of your life.

the only thing you need. also, upgrade the hard drive and dump all your games on it. it's so convenient not having to put in a disc when you want to play.

Great Xbox 1 games that are not backwards-compatible on the 360 (or run very badly):

- Beyond Good & Evil
- KOTOR 1 & 2
- Otogi 1 & 2
- Sudeki

Best console of last gen - sold my PS2 (kept some of the games but not as many as the xbox) still have my old xbox.

Deathrow - the best future sports game ever.

Chronicles of Riddick
Urban Chaos
Phantom Crash
Thief

Jade Empire

Rallisport Challenge 2 and Crimson Skies were the only reasons I even got an Xbox. Otogi 1&2 was icing on the cake.

You all should be ashamed for not mentioning the best and most competitive xbox game:

Phantom Dust

Edit: I think I should be ashamed for not reading this thread properly :lol Beaten :(

Best of the Best
Ninja Gaiden Black (it's so awesome it has to be repeated again and again)
Fatal Frame

Great
Fatal Frame 2 Crimon Butterfly
GunValkyrie (this game polarizes people... I like it more than PDO)
Halo Combat Evolved
Panzer Dragoon Orta

Good
JSRF
Outrun 2 (or 2006 Coast2Coast)

I really want to try Phantom Dust but someone told me it's not that great if I'm not playing it vs someone.

Most of Phantom Dust's single player is like one big (essential and enjoyable) tutorial. The story is actually pretty interesting, especially when you take into account it's mainly a multiplayer game.

But yeah, it's best played on LIVE but you must finish the single player first to get most the skills so you can build your own cool arsenal. There are a number of people who still play it online (I haven't in a while, though)...but the community is still alive and I'm sure it'll increase once Microsoft adds the title to "Xbox Originals" (C'MON ALREADY, MS)...Here's the best site for PD; for skills and the community:

http://xboxphreaker.com/

**btw, it's already Backwards compatible with the 360, for those who aren't sure.

Splinter Cell (stealth, can be found for the mere price of $1.99 at gamestop)
Indigo Prophecy (story heavy)
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (story heavy, technically a sequel, but you don't really need to know anything)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Story heavy, RPG, must-get)
Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams (horror, unique)
Ninja Gaiden Black (best action game last generation)
The Chronicles of Riddick (FPS, best looking Xbox game)
Psychonauts (something different, light hearted)
Beyond Good & Evil (its like Zelda, but better)
Pariah (FPS, story)

And of course, Halo 1 and 2 are a must; they're like default titles that every Xbox owner should have.

Everything I've listed are basically the best single-player experiences on the Xbox, both by critical acclaim and fans. Sequels are things to try later, such as KOTOR 2, and the rest of the Splinter Cells.

Though I'm sure there are more, that other people have listed, like Otogi, and Panzer Dragoon.
