LTTP: Young Justice

I noticed this was on Netflix, so I watched a few episodes. It's really good so far, and it's got some neat team dynamics going on, one of the really important aspects of any team-focused stories.

Something that stood out to me was that the J'onn Jonzz design — which is pretty distinctive — was used in some of those DC animated movies. If that's so, then it suggests these all take place in the same continuity like the Dini-verse/DCAU. Netflix only has the one season available; is the fifth season currently airing (assuming it's one season per year)? What else is being done with this new DCAU?

This show unfortunately only made it to season 2 which isn't on Netflix yet. CN canned this and GL TAS in the same year. And it's a shame because YJ was so damn good.

About the Martian Manhunter thing, er... no. The design is only similar because it's the same character designer. Not because it's the same continuity.

Young Justice only lasted 2 seasons after CN refused to pick up a season 3 due to low toy sales (and seriously, fuck that),

Anyways, besides that, it was a very cool show. I loved it. Greg Weisman continued to display his ability of writing teen characters that don't suck, as he did with Spectacular Spider-Man. Season 2 of YJ goes in a very different direction that a lot of people seem split on. I'm totally fine with it and thought it was rad.

Seriously fuck Cartoon Network.

It seems like they just don't give a fuck about any of the dc cartoons.

But the show is so good
Why would they do that
What even took its place
You know, I ask myself that same question every time I see something DC. The thing that replaced it was Beware the Batman. A show so aggressively meh, that it got cancelled before I finished airing. I think some CN execs just wake up most days and want to make somebody's life worse.

You should listen to this clip from Kevin Smith's podcast where he's interviewing Batman:TAS writer Paul Dini... They start with talking about Beware the Batman's cancellation and it turns into a general thing about Cartoon Network's practices in general. In short, they make poor decisions.

NOTE - THEY BRIEFLY MENTION AN EARLY SEASON 2 SPOILER

The sad thing, they canceled Beware the Batman when it was starting to get good. It really had potential to turn into a great series if they would allow it to last longer.

CN execs have this weird thing about thinking kids don't like action cartoons or serials; instead, it's believed kids only like either Adventure Time-esque crazy comedy shows or mostly episodic shows with massive toylines like Ben 10. Which sucks for DC animated, since that's they're bread and butter.

They also have this weird thing about not wanting shows mostly girls watch because they "don't buy toys." This was part of what sank YJ. Though, it's weird, because I'm sure most of the audience for Teen Titans is girls, but that franchise got another show.

i'm about 6 episodes in and not really feeling it. is it something that will improve more over time? i just finished watching justice league unlimited and this feels like such an incredible step down. robin is super annoying and so is megan. and superboy is one-note. everything else seems pretty generic.

It broke my heart. The thing is less people watch these shows now so the advertising money isn't as much but on the other hand these shows are getting more expensive to produce. So to make money they need to tap into additional revenue streams like selling toys. Unfortunately although YJ had respectable ratings it didn't do well on that front and it's plugged got pulled :-( Keep in mind the target audiences for these kinda shows are 6-11 year old boys who also happen to eat these toys up.

It gets better, yes.

Someone obviously isn't whemled....

yeah this shit right here. tell me it stops.

No they just get a little bit more clever with it and its almost depressing to hear in Season 2 for various reasons.

M'gann is a scrappy for a lot of folks and Superboy was as well.

Robin though? That's a first...

Watch any 3 episodes of Young Justice back-to-back and you've got a better superhero movie than any live action effort ever.

The show was too fucking good. Yep, still salty about the cancellation.

M'gann gets ok when she drops "HELLO MEGAN HELLO MEGAN HELLO MEGAN." i thought Superboy was alright even if he was pretty much angst in physical form

Yeah, I also just started watching this last week randomly when I saw it was on netflix.
It's an amazing show!
I'd say it might be better than Justice League/Unlimited for me.

I always get a bit salty when something involving Tim Drake gets cancelled. So few comic characters lately I actually give a damn about.

Fifth season lol my god. I wish we had that many. I'd pay to see 3 more seasons.

"Hello Megan" and the "whelmed" stuff never bothered me, and I never thought it would bother anyone else.

I wish it was on UK Netflix, so I could watch it again. Between this and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes there has been some really good animation in recent years. It's a shame that they were both cancelled (although EMHs2 saw a decline in quality, but it was still good).

The
time jump
for series 2 was strange at first. Things were of course explained, but I still wish we could have seen a little more of the
teamwork/closeness that developed between the young team and the Justin League, particularly Superman and Superboy
.

I wish I could slap the executives at CNN. They got a great thing going with YJ and they managed to made everyone hate them.

Heck they could have brought back the old Teen Titans and it would have been great.

Its just laughable that they cancelled Beware The Batman right before it starting to get somewhat good. I swear it's like they're trying to drive the company into the ground.

The CW or something should pick up Young Justice. They got a lot of DC stuff going already like Flash, Arrow and Smallville back then.

Green Lantern: TAS was even better.

Sym-bionic Titan was great too..

Tron: Uprising was better than all of em.

It's been a tough few years for animated action shows.

I think they really wanted to introduce Beast Boy, Tim Drake, and Wonder Girl. But it wouldn't make sense for Tim Drake to be Robin when Dick was still 13 himself, and it would be hard to not hear of a girl whose has powers like Wonder Woman. So a time skip was needed.

I'm just glad that we get to see Nightwing. So few animated Batman shows actually has him in it as far as I know.

CW(The WB) doesn't show cartoons like they did in the late 90's early 00's anymore.
They are rumored to be developing a live action Young Justice for 2015 though.

Yeah I know :/ I miss the good ol CW (WB)

Jackie Chan Adventure, Pokemon, Shaolin Showdown. Stuff like that were the bomb.

I don't know how I feel about a live action YJ though. Look at Smallville. It was so hard for them to pull off a lot of episodes with the budget they got, and that was just one guy with Superpowers.

Now they're going to have at least 6?? Not including the villains. Unless they have movie budget, this might turn out to be more of a romance comedy with semi-action YJ. I rather they just do the animation..

I should check it out, but between Batman: TAS on Amazon Prime and Batman Beyond & Justice League on Netflix, it might take me some time till I get to it

My guidelines when deciding to watch two or more good cartoon. Especially if they're somewhat related is to watch the older one first.

The animation of the older one will be more dated. So after watching Justice League and Justice League Unlimited (I suggest you try that too) then jumping to Young Justice will be more pleasant for your eyes.

Depends on the cast really.
Robin, Red Arrow and Artemis(probably not in) should be extremely easy to handle.
Miss Martian could be done easily but they would probably avoid her flying alot.
Flash is easy but would probably look like crap.
Superboy I would be fine with him just being Arrow's Mirakuru level

I fully agree, I just wish we got to see more of the big boys. I don't remember much in the way of team ups. Even Nightwing, didn't do too much in the way of action from what I remember. Perhaps season 3 would have provided.

But that's the thing, it would have to be a massively nerfed and reduced cast for it to be feasible, and that won't make for good viewing. Any non-huge budget will leave it looking awful. This thread is the first time I've heard of it, and my first reaction was not a positive one. I'm always up for being proved wrong, though.

I believe if the Arrow team is on it and they actually care about it like they have with Arrow they can knock it out of the park without a huge budget jump from Arrow's.

You could be right, but I think I'll have to reserve judgement on their handling of super powers until we've seen Flash in action. All I have to go on in my head is Young Justice, so I can't help but see Megan with her ship, Connor with Lex's patches, and Red Tornado as their den mother.

Is there some way to idk protest until they bring it back? I mean they sort of brought back teen titans? And considering they've used time skip stuff before they could idk do another jump to when the team were adults?

Its just crazy that they canceled a great show because no one bought action figures? I don't even know if kids play with action figures that much anymore by the time their 7 parents are giving them electronics to keep them busy as far as I can tell.

Unless everyone start buying all these Young Justice toys, the CN executives won't give a damn what we want sadly.

I don't see YJ making a comeback unless another company pick it up.

Have I told you how stupid the Cartoon Network executives are?

They did bring the franchise back, but only in form of a gag series. Sometimes I just want to kick every CN guy who decides to kill good shows just because their not theirs in the nuts.

Also thanks you revieved my YJ trauma, OP ;___;

Just started watching Young Justice the other day. Really good. Saddens me there isn't a whole lot to watch.

JL: War was a such disappointment. Haven't seen Son of Batman yet but I haven't heard anything good about it.

I watched Season 1 on Netflix recently. The action was pretty great, but all the teen romance, Superboy angst, and stupid catchphrase stuff was really annoying. The quality of writing in something like this is such a downgrade when compared to Batman TAS or JL/JLU.

Still, I liked it and I'm interested in Season 2 for the time skip. But man, it could have been so much better.

all right. glad i'm not alone.

it's not even a downgrade compared to the dcau stuff. it doesn't compare to its competition, stuff like sym-bionic titan or the 2012 turtles show.

Everyone that worked on it are long gone.

Does this at least end on a decent note? I stopped watching at ep. 9 after learning it got canceled.

It ends with
a cliffhanger
.

SEASON 2 SPOILER
Vandal Savage and The Light were working with/for Darkseid the whole time, which explains their occasional use of Apokoliptian tech, including boom tubes, and the media manipulation of Glorious Gottfried. The entire point of his machinations in S1 and the Reach plot in S2 was to get the Justice League/Reach/GL Corp/Mongul out of the way long enough for Savage to gain control of the Warworld. The series closes with Savage arriving on Apokolips and shaking hands with Darkseid.
