These guys have a wealth of top notch games that were allready designed around a mouse only interface... they are fools if they dont port them to DS (maybe as some sort of bundle/bundles?).. come on guys, get to steppin.

Also, whoever owns the rights to Kings Quest could make them if they wanted to.

well, they have the second screen.. so they could make the top screen like a magnifying glass or something that shows greater or something. just put a magnifying glass icon on the bottom screen.. then drag the stylus over the bottom screen to see it magnified on the top screen and unclick the mag icon to go back to a map on the top screen (there is actually a requirement that one of the screens be a map I think).

I don't know of how marketable those types of games would be but I'd be in heaven with portable renditions plus touchscreen controls.

Those screens mumu posted plus the magnifying glass option StoOgE presented sound perfect.

Nah, the older ones are already at quite a low resolutions (compared to games these days) and you could easily refine the menu to be context sensitive or something similar to modern adventure games.

Anyway, if Lucasarts want to release MI 1&2 on a single DS cart I'm positive it would sell a sh**load. +1 here anyway.
 
WOW I never thought of ole sierra products on DS. That is interesting....I die to play clean updated version of QFQ4.

It would have to be the newer ones since the really old ones require typing. I guess they could make a virtual keyboard. hmm....
 
Yeah, it would be very fitting on the DS, but would people buy the games? How well did Broken Sword sell for GBA, for example?
 
You guys are forgetting the fact that a good game doesn't automatically sell. Today's gamer has absolutely zero relation to Guybrush. And, to be perfectly honest, this kind of adventure is pretty obsolete. (And that's coming from someone who was an enormous fan of them back in the day.)

Or they could add a point & click interface, a la the fan remakes of KQ 1 & 2.

Not really, because the intelligent humor found in those games can hardly be found in any of todays games. Humor doesn't sell games anymore though, so they might sneak in some shooting or driving in there.
 
I actually think the games would sell well simply because handheld gamers were likely console gamers back in the day and missed out on these classics and would like to try them out.. plus most GBA games are throwbacks to 10 year old console gaming standards.. so why not try 10 year old PC gaming standards?

They may not sell great, but given that everything is allready done for the game, save the interface and getting it to run on the DS hardware I dont think it would cost much to do..

Seriously. How much development time would this take? The interface would be the hardest but the content's already there.

As for the Sierra games, does that Sierra even exist anymore? After all the shakeups and hirings and firings and renamings, they may have to get through a lot of red tape just to find out who owns the rights to the games, let alone port them to the DS.

I agree. I think these could easily turn a profit if done right. The real barrier is convincing publishers like Lucas Arts that this is a good idea at a time when they're spending more time on specific licenses and are turning their back on their adventure game heritage.

No, they've been totally consumed by VU who own all their IP.. and I doubt there's one single man in VU atm with enough knowledge about old Sierra games to port these things to DS. I would've loved to see it happen though. The old text adventures would be great.. upper screen for the screen, lower screen for a virtual keyboard, etc..

Police Quest II and King's Quest IV are the best adventures ever made.. Sierra's games just didn't have that magic once they moved to point'n'click adventure games.. Though I must say Larry 5 and Police Quest III still did rock. The rest, though, went downhill really fast.

Regardless, if retro adventure gaming was possible on DS I'd buy one without a moment's hesitation.

I see what you're saying and all, but I still think you're making things easy on yourself. Don't forget that the average gamer (ie, the consumer power) doesn't care about the mediums history, much like nobody gives a fuck about Birth of a Nation (an influential movie, for those who don't know).

I mean, how often do you see anybody even mention Spacewar? It's an honorable, even utopian, thought, but people just don't care.

There would be issues with nearly all of Sierra's pre-mouse games. Space Quest 1-3, King's Quest 1-4, Quest for Glory 1-3, Leisure Suit Larry 1-3, and Police Quest 1 & 2 all use text input for the interface.
 
Unfortunately I think it's unlikely our wishes will be heard by Lucasarts or Sierra. I think therefore that our main hope is that DS hacking has a breakthough eventually and scummvm gets a port. Or maybe we'll see adventure games appearing from other publishers. Lets hope Another Code is a good game and is successful eh?

I do as well, though it looks alot like Myst.. which could be a bad thing. However, if the game sells well, it could motivate Lucas to get it done..

and yeah, the older Sierra games could be hard to port.. an on screen keyboard could be done, but it wouldnt be very intuitive.. I was thinking more along the lines of point and click adventures.
 
Even when Sierra was still around they were content to let Space Quest, Police Quest and Kings Quest die.

Someone should buy the rights to all those games and actually continue with them, Space Quest was hillarious.
 
This idea is so good that it must have occured to the Lucas guys at one point or another. It just makes so much sense. Any point and click adventure game on the DS makes sense, actually.

Plus it would cost next to nothing for them to port them over, and the DS media is so cheap, too...

No joke. I was just thinking about Lemmings on DS the other day. I'd love to see them rock it old school with either a port or perhaps a new, original installment.

I thought about this awhile ago. Game on bottom, text on top, and bring up the icon menu by pressing a button. Or even just use R to scroll thru the different icons for sierra games and maybe a separate button for inventory.

It would probably be a good amount of work, but 1 port = all ports so it would be worth it. They could probably even get away with full price if each cart gets a different series.

But don't sweat it guys. Grab a DS flash cart upon release, and wait a few months and ScummVM will be ported to DS as well as the Sierra alternative. Trust me.
 
Well, Full Throttle could sell well because it has some action like elements.. the only trick with that game (or any of the later games) would be voice. How much does a DS cart hold, and could they get all the voice acting in? Even if the quality is a bit suspect just having it in there would work.
 
DS cart could easily hold the voices with compression.


I would get rid of my old PC versions of those old Lucasarts games if those were available for DS. Hell, they don't even work directly anymore with sounds and music. I'd also like to see NEW point & click adventure games on DS.
 
I agree, I would like some new content too.. maybe Double Fine could work on one after Psychonaughts is out? Im not sure what sort of resources are used to make a game like this, but I would imagine its cheaper than a current gen console game.

However, I think the point and click interface with the stylus might actually be more intuitive than a mouse.. if the DS could revive my favorite, now mostly dead genre, I would make sweet sweet love to it.
 
If Lucasart or Sierra won't port those adventure games to the DS, then there is always SCUMMVM. There's already scummVM ports for the XBOX and PS2(not sure about this)..... once hacker find a way to boot games off of flash carts/cards, you can bet someone will port scummvm to those.

There's also a version of SCUMMVM for GP32, and it actually works with voices and all. Even though you only got 128 MB storage space at most, there are versions of some games with compressed sound.
