Lumines: can anyone outline the exact differences between the US and JP versions?

Please? I keep hearing different things from different people, and I'd like some straight answers so I can decide whether or not to toss the JP version in favor of the US one.

I've *literally* played the US version all day today (until now) so I can probably answer Qs you might have. Haven't played the JP version though, so I can only answer specific things you might want to know...

What have you heard, John? I might have to go pick up the U.S. version tomorrow if there's any interesting. :)

IGN: You have had some time since the release of the Japanese version of LUMINES in December to make some fixes -- what changes have you made to the US edition of the game? Are the changes all improvements, or are there any things that you decided to just change because you wanted there to try something different?

Mizuguchi: Since the development schedule for the Japanese version was very tight to make it a launch title, it was very difficult to focus on details.
However, in the US version we made as many improvements as possible to let users experience better game play. We improved loading speed, added retry sequence, etc.

Straight from the horses mouth not exactly exact, but I remember reading this article hope this helps.

Yeah I've seen all that. What I'm looking for are specifics -- details from people who've spent time with both versions. Surely there must be someone on GAF who can answer this??

All I could garner from IGN's review is that the load times have been reduced. But I too am curious to hear from though those own both. Surely there must be someone!

edit: Oy, those GameFAQ boards.

Well I never played the JPN version, but I watched gameplay videos like thousands of times...I think the transitions between skins have changed. In the JPN version, there seems to be a 'gap' of silence between the skins, which means it's loading the next skin obviously. In the US version, there is no gap...it plays a bit more of the current skin, then it changes to the next skin. Smoother transition.

And there's a Ubisoft splash logo on bootup :P

Is there now a Retry option in Puzzle Mode? That got annoying real quickly (not to mention draining battery life because it loaded the same puzzle over again)...

No retry option. AFAICT, there are no discernable differences... faster load times? I haven't noticed any.

I braved the depths of GameFAQs to check on this for you.
Unfortunately my IQ just dropped by 100 points.

You poor soul! Now we will never get a coherent message from you ever again. :( :( :(

Anyone who is really into Lumines is just going to have to pick up the US version. WHereas in the Japanese version ther eis a clear drop and a moment of pause for loading between skins, in the Japanese one, it is practically seamless. I was not going to pick up the US Lumines but after playing my sister's copy, now I have to!

Why did Mizuguchi say they added a retry sequence then? Is he talking about the Vs. CPU mode, maybe? Can anyone check that to see if it allows you to continue now?

Hrm. Weird.

Well, if anyone finds anything, please let me know (post it here). Otherwise I think I'm gonna return my copy and get something else. Sounds like the Japanese version is complete enough...

Thanks!

Those of you that wanna hear LIGHTS....
I don't want to get to lv 100 to get Lights, what should I do?
I finally got to LIGHTS!!
Getting to Lights....

I don't know if this is the new retry feature added in the US version, but when you fail a puzzle in puzzle mode, there's an option to either Retry (X button) or go back the menu (Triangle). Was that in the JPN version? I thought 'retry' would be selectable in the start menu...

Damn, I was hoping you were a huge fan of TM2 like I was. Then it would be a really easy sell. If you didn't like TM2 then you probably won't like this much. As for what's so special about this one...... the final boss is a moving building! :lol

That's it! In the JP version when you fail a puzzle the only option is to go back to the menu, whereby you would have to select the puzzle again.
