Lumines Puzzle Fusion is Immersion

I made the mistake of watching Spider Man 2 and playing Ridge Racers before trying Lumines (is it loo-mens or loo-men-ess?).

I sat down in a dark corner, plugged in my headphones, and began playing away with Shinin. No kidding that an hour went by in the twinkling of an eye.

The music, visuals, and interactive musical notes combined with the simple, yet fun puzzle gameplay really make something special.
For the first time since Metroid Prime and to a higher degree I was immersed in a game.
Makes me want to try other games in that vein like Rez.

Oh, and the PSP screen is mana from heaven. I can't play my SP now.

Lumines hurts my eyes and hands. Damn 1+ hour sessions

As crazy as it sounds, I think Lumines is the most unfriendly PSP game in terms of playing in short bursts as a portable game. Needs a console port

Yep. I can't play it longer than 20 mins. The only thing I don't like about the PSP - it absolutely kills your hands.

Yeah, that's right. I've heard a lot of people pronounce it Loo-mens, but that's wrong.

Time seems to have no meaning when I play Lumines. Everytime I boot it up, several hours seem to pass without me even noticing. Sometimes I forget to blink and my eyes water upu to a point where I can't see anything. That's when I take a fifteen minute break but jump right back on.

My first round I hit 12k. Not bad... I know I can do better.
And yes, the PSP has made me so very happy. I just need a good duo.

WHAT IS THE CHEAPEST 512 card?

Probably around $120, so that's what, just a topless shot?

THat's not funny and I'm being serious about the duo...
I saw a 512 for 59 today... I'd like to get it cheaper than that.

and what is the size of the screen? I want to custom format my pictures for the screen.

$59 for a 512 is like the cheapest price you'll see right now. They normally go for $89, so it's a pretty good deal

It's not so much that the psp hurts my hands but rather my fingers fall asleep and become numb when I play Lumines. I guess it could be the angle I'm holding it at but I play Ridge Racer the same way without a problem.

It looks like "loo-mins" to me. Is it officially "loo-min-es" or is that just how you guys pronounce it?

As far as english pronunciation, it would be loo-mines (as in a land mine). The official pronunciation may be different, but as far as the spelling goes that is the way it should be pronounced.

Heh, glad I'm not the only one who thought this.

o_O

It should be "Loom-in-ezz".

Lumines is actually one of the games that I prefer to play because it doesn't force me to contort my hand so I can use the analog stick. I think Sony's just being stubborn for the sake of being stubborn at this point. Dreamcast, GameCube, XBox: They all have the analog control in the primary position.

But I do endure the pain for Wipeout, because I think it's the bees' knees.

(And as I said in another thread on the issue, "Lumines" is pronounced "sex.") ;)

Isn't it a pluralization of something? That is where I get my pronunciation from.

Lumines-s=Lumine, "e" at the end signifies a long vowel for "i," Loo-Mine, Loo-Mines. If it is singular than I am wrong.

Lumines is short for luminescence, meaning the emission of light. It's pronounced Loo-men-ess.

Oh and the Best Buy price for the 512MB Sandisk Pro Duo ($59 USD) is the cheapest I could find and I've looked around for hours.

Is that 512 online or in-store? Link if online please.

Edit: The pronunciation you guys are giving would be spelled Luminous.

Edit 2: Saw Lagunas post. So they just cut the end off of the word. Meh.

I cant ever take a PSP thread by olimario serious anymore after knowing what he did to acquire one.

What is the going rate for nude pictures of Japanese girlfriends.... cmon guys... its an import!

It's probably both in store and online. I saw the sale price in this week's circular for 69.99. Take an additional $10 off with the mail-in-rebate to get it down to $59.

Well, also the fact that its spelled out phonetically for you in Japanese. It may not be correct English, but it IS what they intended the game to be called.

I still can't break 20K in this game!!! :(

The trick is twofold:

1) Clear the board as often as possible in the beginning, bonus points abound.
2) Even when complete boxes are highlighted, you can use them to form even more boxes. It's all a matter of beating the timeline.

I've only had the game since Saturday, and I only have about an hour or two free to play it per day. MAYBE. I'm still struggling with it a little. The tendency, at least for me, is to play it like you would Tetris. At some points I just revert to making lines, and that's when I've officially fucked myself.

But I'm getting better. I went north of 30k tonight.

here we go again...

He sent nude pictures of his girlfriend to morphix in exchange for $350 that was used to buy a PSP, Ridge Racers, and Lumines.

By the way, the game is awesome. I am at 47,000 and climbing. I almost fell asleep with my PSP in hand the other night playing it. Great game. Sega lost a good one.

O.K. this had to be asked.....

Lumines or Super Puzzle Fighter II....which one is more addicting? Which one has the most replay value?

Yeah, for the first two days i played it like Tetris. i still do it from time to time and it's completely random, but i'm much better now. Last night, i just got completely into the game and got just over 40k. My top score now isn't much higher (48784), but i understand the concepts of layering to build combos and how to use the special blocks a lot more efficiently now.

The hardest part about the game is putting it down. i'll lose and put my PSP in suspend mode, then fifteen minutes later, i'm playing again. i usually play for an hour before bed, which has been really screwing my sleeping because i get in bed with the intent of going to sleep, then i wake my PSP back up.

:O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O

I just received 20K off of two combos!!! :D Lets see if I can keep this going!

My highest score is around 55000 but lately, I have been addicted to both the puzzle mode and the VS CPU mode. Damn, the Vampire always beats me in VS mode.

The best thing about the game is quite literally the whole dual rythm. By that I don't mean the music (which, yeah, is still pretty amazing) but rather deleting a full array of X's, and then switching to O's for the next timeline sweep. So on and so on, +1000 per unicolor.

How's that for irony? I hope this game become a smash hit. Would serve Sega right for dropping the Miz-san. I can just see the forehead smacking in Sega HQ.

I'm pretty sure it's pronouced exactly like "luminesce". At least that's how I thought I heard Miziguchi pronouce it in a video interview. Previously I had thought it was pronouced lumeens (as if it were french).
