What are they waiting for ? WW3 ? Good plan lol 🤡😎
Recently they have been busy improving PS Now tech and merging it into the new PS+ and adding emulators for more platforms. I assume they are now improving the emulators, fixing stuff and making new ones. Their team is/has been also working on OS stuff like 1440p/VRR/Discord/Tournaments/chat stuff/folders/etc.

Some of their cloud gaming related patents made reference to 5G, so I assume they may also wait to release their cloud gaming for smartphones+tablets+tvs until 5G gets more coverage, and specially until they complete their pending important work for consoles regarding new console PS Plus+emulatiton fixes and other OS stuff (like a bigger Discord and Tournaments integration).

Maybe during 2022 they'll release new PS Plus for PS + full Discord integration in PS + PS1/PSP emulation for PS and then durin 2023 it's when they plan to release PSVR2 + cloud gaming on smartphones+tablets+tvs.

Speed is mostly irrelevant. You can have 50mbps or 1gbps, doesn't make much of a difference. If your experience is really bad it probably means there's no data center near you.
I did test PS Now during the early days with 100mbps and a modern wifi6 router (but always using LAN cable, not wifi to use cloud gaming), and after many years I got it again just before the new PS+ having 1gbps. I assume they improved their tech or that they may have placed a datacenter closer to my home, but the experience is now awesome.

In the past I had visible visual compression artifacts and now I don't have vislble ones (I play it in a ~30" 1080p tv and the sofa is ~3m away from it), the input lag was pretty noticiable in the past and now I can perfectly play arcade shmups or fighting games perfectly. In terms of input lag my experience is comparable to a local/native game with slighly high input lag or like when playing an online match. In the past from time to time I got slowdowns or lost smoothness, now it doesn't happen anymore.

The experience I have at home -and it's with a PS4, a PS5 has better network and compression tech so it performs better- it's one that 99% of the people wouldn't be able to notice they aren't playing via cloud gaming unless it's a game they have been playing right now during hundreds of hours locally/native.

I'd say the main reasons for having bad experience when playing cloud gaming are:
  1. You are playing over wifi instead of over LAN cable. Switch to LAN cable and stop using wifi for online multiplayer and cloud gaming.
  2. You have other devices (computers, phones, tablets, consoles, etc) connected to that wifi or LAN. Switch them off completely when playing cloud gaming to ensure they don't download anything even in background.
  3. You have an old and/or poorly configurated router, ask your ISP to send you a new one. They sent me the wifi6 one for free, I only paid the shipment.
  4. Distance betwen your home and the closest server of that cloud gaming service.
  5. Quality of your internet connection not only in speed, but also in latency or on how reliable it is versus interfernces an lost packages. Fiber is way better than DLS, which is way better than 4G/5G, which is way better than satellite, which is better than coaxial.
Regarding 5G, most packages of info get lost between the 5G antenna you have close to home and your phone. So some of the recent Sony patents are related to once tihs happens, instead of sending again that package since from the server, it's sent again from the 5g antenna to the phone. Less distance means faster speed and less latency. This would highly reduce the input lag and image quality and also would highly reduce the work in the server.

Aah Fat Frog you are triggert, you rent your games digital i and many others buy the most of theyr games physical.
You can promote renting games till Kingdom comes, thats your choice, but not mine...
Don't spread misinformation, darling. 😜
I don't rent anything since 80% of my cloud library is in fact digital via Steam/EGS/GFN...

Yes, you can rent a bunch of games (Luna) but it's not that far from game pass (except a few differences).

If you're talking about Stadia, then, it's just theory. You pay for unlimited access and family plan. Saying it's renting because "it will die soon" is just a theorie:

1: You don't know anything about refund policy (maybe they'll refund as mentioned in the terms, maybe they'll find a way to screw us... For now, paid content from google music, google movies were not stolen from us... Content was transferred to new services)

2 : You think Stadia will die this summer ?
It was just announced for LATAM... Meaning Stadia still receives funds from Google.

If it takes off in LATAM, it will be hard for haters to keep saying it will die soon.(they've said that since 2019...)

I hate the idea of game streaming. I get the convenience factor but it can take its sweet time before being widely adopted! Some people have already started to swear by one service over the other (some of it likely driven by their favorite platform) but my experience with all have been a little mixed. Stadia was somewhat fine but playing Destiny on it just didn't feel right (something was a bit off, not sure how to explain).

Calm yourself, sweetheart. Do you own your digital games? If not, you're renting them.

This is coming from somebody who accepts that streaming with a subscription model will be the only way to play games in the future.

i wouldn't mind going all in with streaming but yeah my experience so far hasn't been great. image quality sucks and i have good internet. the worst thing is the input lag. some games are playable but in most games the controls feel "floaty" and as if they are on super high sensitivity. it'll be a while yet before streaming is "good enough".

streaming might become the most common/popular way but i don't see digital downloads going anywhere. physical media will absolutely be a thing of the past though.

Streaming is the future, like it or not the times will change and you will all be old men screaming at the local software old days.
you will own nothing and be happy.

Keeping stuff is still a thing, but in reality I don't think I replay 90% of the games I keep. With movies I abandoned keeping them, I haven't bought a movie in a decade or so and I never cared I don't own them since. With games, well, I still prefer buying over streaming. Its just the best possible experience with the least amount of input lag, possibly 120hz and all that. Movies might suffer some IQ compared to an UHD disc as well, but you're not playing them. With games the differences are a bit more crucial.

But about keeping games... even if I would've kept something old like Motorstorm I probably wouldn't play it since its 720p/30fps jank nowadays. I would likely only replay such games if they were enhanced. I refrained from playing Dead Space 2 for a long time as well, until it was upgraded. There was one game on Xbox which delisting bummed me and it was TMNT Arcade. But then again, it appears on the new collection later this month and I expect a better port.

I was answering in general to the argument i often read which is "Stadia is like renting since it will close soon".

In fact, i was not thinking about the philosophical aspect...
Yes, digital could be seen as a kind of renting but not the kind of renting used to downplay digital or cloud.(for instance, an expensive rental of a movie for only 2 fucking days).

1. With sales, digital games are often cheaper than our rental VHS of the 90's.(and it's life time rental. So yeah, i don't care." Blabla you'll own nothing and you'll be happy". Whatever you want... I enjoy a few physical games with great art works but for the others, it's a pain in the ass "to own a ton of ugly boxes "or even find time to sell them.
So yeah, i understand the point of view of many physical warriors but it's just not for me anymore. I just keep a few games or DVD i really love, very polished and well made.

2: Legally, we don't own cloud, digital or physical games (just paper, box). Physical offers a bit more of possibilities but nothing amazing if the cover is not wonderful and it also can be broken, stolen easily. The 3 methods are interesting though.
