Lurid Trump allegations made by Louise Mensch and co-writer came from hoaxer

-Mensch and Claude Taylor tweeted details of criminal inquires that didn’t exist
-Hoaxer who fed information said she acted out of frustration over fake news
-Taylor issues mea culpa on Twitter after being approached by Guardian

Claude Taylor tweeted fake details of criminal inquiries into Trump that were invented by a source whose claim to work for the New York attorney general was not checked, according to emails seen by the Guardian. The allegations were endorsed as authentic and retweeted by his co-writer Louise Mensch.

The source’s false tips included an allegation, which has been aggressively circulated by Mensch and Taylor, that Trump’s inactive fashion model agency is under investigation by New York authorities for possible sex trafficking.

The hoaxer, who fed the information to Taylor by email, said she acted out of frustration over the “dissemination of fake news” by Taylor and Mensch. Their false stories about Trump have included a claim that the president was already removed from office in a process kept secret from the American public.

“Taylor asked no questions to verify my identity, did no vetting whatsoever, sought no confirmation from a second source – but instead asked leading questions to support his various theories, asking me to verify them,” the source said in an email.

After being approached for comment by the Guardian on Monday, Taylor posted what he described as a “mea culpa” on Twitter. “As a ‘citizen journalist’ I acknowledge my error and do apologize,” he wrote.

Mensch denied using the bogus information and said her allegations about Trump’s model agency came from her own sources. Asked why she had retweeted Taylor’s false posts, Mensch said: “I don’t think anybody can vet anybody else’s sources.”

I use Mensch as an Onion sorbet. Not surprised she's sticking to her "other sources" guns, tbh.

Holy shit. It's been months since I bothered to check out any of their claims, and I thought they were unhinged then. This is just wild.

Mensch has been melting down over this on Twitter for twenty minutes now. Screencaps and everything.

LMAO 🤣

Typical. These people never learn.

"EVERYTHING AGAINST ME AND TRUMP IS FAKE NEWZ!!"

Haha really? I can't see his account so I hope it's good!

Just in case anyone still thinks these two are legit

Explosive allegations about Donald Trump made by online writers with large followings among Trump critics were based on bogus information from a hoaxer who falsely claimed to work in law enforcement.

New fake news dilemma: sites publish real scoops amid mess of false reports

A "citizen journalist"?

Mensch and Taylor should be treated same as this guy.

I don't think I saw this story reported anywhere? At least, anywhere credible.

It's not just that story:

The source also falsely specified to Taylor that the state case was “proceeding under the NY version of a RICO statute” – referring to the federal Racketeering Influence and Corrupt Organizations Act – “which is called enterprise corruption.”
In another tweet on July 22, Taylor claimed that “in point of fact,” Schneiderman’s office was “using New York’s “Enterprise Corruption” statutes which are that State’s RICO corollary” in its apparent pursuit of Trump and his associates.
The following day, claiming to have “more from Schneiderman source,” Taylor posted a series of tweets giving details about the number of people supposedly being targeted by the inquiries. The tweets corresponded directly with more bogus information emailed to Taylor by the hoaxer earlier that day.

Anything involving the NYAG is bullshit as his "source" claimed to work there when they didn't.

Funny:

Claiming to report things that the mainstream media will not, they have also moved to collect money from readers. Mensch’s website Patribiotics accepts donations “to fund more writers and research”. Taylor has said he will soon establish an online fundraising campaign to protect himself from legal threats. A GoFundMe page created by supporters of Taylor has already raised more than $18,000 in his name.

It's more about Taylor and Mensch posting their "insider knowledge" on twitter and people believing it. They have a large following. Mensch also has several goofy blogs begging for funds to support her elite journalism skills.

I can't believe anyone was listening to Mensch after her bizarre shit about how the Marshall of the Supreme Court had already impeached Trump in a secret ceremony and installed Orrin Hatch as shadow president.

Everyone needs to stop paying attention to these dumb political fan-fic writers on Twitter.

She fucking started Heat Street! The den of fucking gamergate apologists. Why did supposed leftists even listen to her to begin with?

Another example of why The New York Times is trash.

And zero critical thinking from the people who just wanted to hear someone confirm what they believed in.

So? They published it

All newspapers publish fucking ridiculous opinions in the editorial section often to provoke reaction . Except for the wall street journal which occasionally publishes a rational one.

It's a shitty practice but it is "normal"

So the well-sourced reporting that Haberman, Thrush, etc do is not invalidated by a single flavor of the week op-ed by someone you wouldn't even call a regular contributor.

Are you guys serious?

Haberman and Thrush are fucking trash lol

You're right, it's not invalidated by a single op-ed. It's 100x worse and is singlehandedly rendering the Times an irrelevant, impotent news organization during its most important test.

Sad!

You trying to fill Lord's space at CNN or...?

Y'all are serious about trashing the Times as a news source because of an op-ed by someone who is not a staff writer? That's a huge leap.

Anyone with a brain has been saying Mensch and Taylor are bullshit artists for months, people who post their tweets regularly get called out in political threads.

Edit: wait is this really happening

Eh, I paid attention to them the same way I pay attention to "my uncle works at Nintendo" E3 rumors, and I have no regrets. It only became a waste of time once the conspiracy theories went into completely implausible fanfiction territory (which happened pretty early with Mensch and a while later with Taylor).

I still think Claude Taylor is well-intentioned but gullible, rather than an intentional purveyor of disinformation. If he really is planning to try to raise money for "legal defense," and he actually isn't in legal trouble, I'll probably start to suspect him of being a malicious actor though.

I'm also still curious to find out whether the few things these people got right were legitimate scoops or lucky guesses. Especially in the case of Claude Taylor, "rando former low-level Clinton WH employee hears a bit of info, posts it on Twitter, then starts getting duped by pranksters" seems equally as plausible as "rando former low-level Clinton WH employee starts posting disinformation to boost his art show sales and happens to get his first guess right."

The opinion side of a newspaper is cut off from the reporting side. If they're not firewalled, you're not running your organization correctly.

There are plenty of reasons to give the NYT news side shit (they're very guilty of "both sides"-ism and being obsessed with the white rural unicorn) but this isn't one of them.

It''s a shame, her first couple of blog posts were so intriguing and seemed to be based on some facts with some theory threading it together. Didn't have to go so far off the deep end but I guess it helps people stop taking her so seriously.

The thing that I find interesting is Taylor sometimes interacts with some legitimate people (for eg Rick Wilson who is awesome). So while I don't take his so-called sources seriously there must be some true tidbits floating around.

Hope we get the full story some time.

Yeah, people posting Mensch and Taylor in threads here always annoyed me, considering it was the exact type of fake news many here were critisizing.

At best she's a hack reporter who doesn't know how to vet her sources for shit (and same with Taylor), and at worst she's a peddler of fake news.

The full story is that someone was feeding bullshit to Taylor and Louise "BLM is a Russian Psy-Op" Mensch for the lulz, and mainstream media people were willing to run with it because it supported their narrative.
