Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

The full resolution wallpaper for Mountain Lion is 3200 x 2000...has that always been the case or is that a dramatic increase? I'd assume they'd support up to the max res of the biggest iMac which is 2560 x 1440.
Wasn't there also something a while back about various assets having much larger resolutions? Suspicious!!

anyone know if this will install as an update to lion (i.e not wiping all my apps/data)? I have the preview but I can't be bothered if I have to reinstall everything.

Calling Reminders a "to do app" is an insult to actual to do apps.

I don't seem much in this update that's useful for me. Syncing notes is cool, but not worth it for me.

Anyone else think this is also going to herald in unanounced features specific for the oft rumored massive redesign of their entire Mac line. Allowing for whatever new feature set the hardware will carry?

I for one am excited. This is just the tip of the iceberg for a huge year for Apple to re-invent their product line.

so gatekeeper is kinda like UAC in windows? i don't see what the big deal is.

edit: i guess a better comparison might be Internet Explorer 9′s SmartScreen (which i believe is being extended for Windows 8 to all browsers). It only lets stuff you download that has a good reputation run and warns you about others. (they say the warnings will be rare apparently).

Anyway, i'm always for more security because users are dumb.

Wait wait wait this isn't funny. Do I need an Apple ID to download those?

I hope my country won't be blocked. I've yet to try to download something that wasn't blocked (getting Lion was such a pain).
You need an Apple ID to buy ML in the first place

Edit: To be clear I sympathize, but something like this should be expected if you're in a country that's blocked.

My normal morning routine is check out MacRumors.com/GAF but I never made it to GAF! I'm scrolling and I see Mountain Lion references and such and I couldn't understand

We need a desktop iBooks!

I use a program called "Breeze" for window size management. It basically steals Window 7's "snap window to the top to make it full size" functionality, and i miss it whenever I use a mac that doesn't have it. OS X really needs something like this built in. Hell in the last version we just got the ability to resize a window from any corner. And we need a Finder update. The "arrange by" feature in Finder is useless at best.

Idk, I'd like more functionality improvements to do every day tasks faster over iOS style additions I will never use. Airplay mirroring is nice though.

So the main gist of Mountain Lion is just more casual shit?

This sucks for people who want to use their Macs for work...
It's seems Apple is turning their software department more and more to the casual market...

Looks sweet! Totally out of the blue as well! I like it that way, because then you don't have to hype yourself for stuff you won't get!

What does this mean for Windows 8, can we see it being pushed back from a expected fall release to incorporate some features to compete with this. I don't know much about Win 8, so pardon if I seem ignorant.

I installed Messages earlier and it is nice to finally have it on Mac OS X.

I love this new annually release cycle. Apple will leave everyone in the dust with this.

I hope this fixes my wifi problem on my macbook pro.

Are you up to date? There were a couple of firmware upgrades. Then again my MacBook Pro is trouble free.

You can still use your Mac for work

Yeah, it's just that it's not offering much new in that respect. I find myself weaning away from Apple's programs and using alternatives that seem better suited for my work.
Alfred > Spotlight
Chrome > Safari
Sparrow > Mail.app

It's fine though, I like the idea of having an incremental upgrade every year, as long as it's cheap. But i'd reallly like to see finder improved significantly. I care very little about iPad features being brought to OSX. Does anyone here use LaunchPad? Seems completely useless to me.

It's a different concept. Smartscreen is limited to browsers and is more about anti-phishing than sandboxing like gatekeeper. I like the middle ground setting, where developers can certify their accounts (which I suspect many will do), instead of going the Mac App Store route which requires you to actually go through the App Store process and abide by their terms, which is a lot more restrictive.

By default, Mountain Lion will only let Mac App Store apps and Apps from “identified developers” launch for the first time. To become an “identified developer,” Mac developers have to register with Apple and get a personalized certificate, which they then use to cryptographically sign their apps. Apple doesn’t do any sort of background check on the developer, and it doesn’t see any of the software.

Apple says that although these apps aren’t as safe as Mac App Store apps, they’re safer for a couple of reasons. First, a signed app can’t be modified (to add in some spyware, for example) without breaking the signature. By default, Mountain Lion will refuse to launch an app modified in that way. Second, if it turns out that an app from a particular developer is actually malware, Apple has the ability to revoke that developer’s license—at which point no future Mac users will be able to install software from that developer.

I can tell you one thing: Windows 8 is not being pushed back.

Not if I want to use Final Cut :)

There aren't any sensible productivity upgrades included in this package.
I don't need the shit I already got on my iPad and iPhone, thank you.

In theory, the iCloud stuff could benefit productivity if you have seamless syncing of documents and data between devices.

maybe not for your work, in particular, but it is a useful feature.

Anyone hoping for a revamp of the Finder to make it more power user friendly isn't going to get what they're looking for from Apple

If they're going yearly, the price is going to drop, or even go free. If they can figure out the accounting and go free, holy shit...

As for ML, they've added everything I wanted. What an update!

Already? I'm still using Snow Leopard. At this rate I might as well delay buying a new iMac until summer.

Will the ultimate OS X/iOS merge be called OS X 10.9 LOL Cat?

This is pretty useful for work, I use Dropbox though...

It would probably make sense that they go free since that would increase the dependency on iCloud and increase the usage of the Mac App Store which would in-theory lead to greatly increased revenues. The money made from actually selling the OS has to substantially pale in comparison to hardware profits or App Store profits.

Considering iOS updates are always free, I could see things swinging that way.

...but if people are willing to pay for it, you should probably charge money for it. How many people upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard? And then Snow Leopard to Lion? I think it was something like 25% distribution at this point?

They can't charge $29 a year, though. Look at the people in this thread complaining about having just purchased Lion. It's the yearly part that makes me think they're going free.

same here. :) <3 dropbox

which is why I'm glad Apple is building something like this into the OS. I know how useful it can be and if more people can take advantage of it, the better.

the difference with iCloud will likely be file size limits but the convenience of pushing syncs to iOS devices, which dropbox can't do (needs a manual sync on iOS)

Looked at Flipboard on my iPhone, saw "OS X Mountain Lion," was genuinely surprised.

I'm definitely excited for this. I'm assuming it'll be $30, which isn't bad at all.

I'd still say Dropbox is more convenient because it's also windows-compatible...

Yup that's the thing that confuses me. Whyyyyy Apple

I'm guessing it will happen, but not before iPads start slowing down in sales.

If iBooks is a huge selling point of the iPad for some people, than putting it out on other devices decreases demand on the new hotness.

Apple wants to own the tablet market as hard as it can while the competition scrambles to release ANYTHING that competes.
